My english bulldog had entropion surgery in December.  He had been seen by his regular vet who then advised us to send him to a specialist for further diagnosis.  The specialist diagnosed him w/entropion in November, and we were waiting to see if things would progress as he grew since he was a puppy.  In December it was decided that surgery was the best option at the time? I called Trupanion to confirm that the surgery would be covered.  They told me that YES it would be covered, as long as his condition wasn't considered preexisting.  Well in February they denied covering his surgery or ANY of his visits prior because in their opinion his entropion was preexisting.  My vet sent a letter of appeal, reminding them that he was NOT diagnosed w/entropion until November when he was seen by an opthalmology specialist.  They also denied his second appeal?
In my opinion, Trupanion is a waste of money.  If your dog has been seen by a vet anytime prior to purchasing their insurance they will comb over those vet records to find ANY words, phrases, etc? to use for their preexisting claim denials.  It's absolutely ridiculous, especially considering one of their associates told 2 days prior that the insurance would cover the surgery.
It get's EVEN better? I cancelled the insurance months ago, and they are STILL trying to use my credit card to pay for the monthly fees?!!

Their customer service is poor to put it politely & folks who have pets who might have preexisting conditions - NOTE that when they start taking your money, they haven't even reviewed or looked at your pet's medical history or profile to warn you ahead of time the kind of things they might not cover in the future. Until you have to file your first claim with them (we didn't have to file any until recently), they are simply just taking your money without any actual information on your pet. We're lucky ours was a puppy when enrolled and didn't have any preexisting conditions but I felt strongly their practices need to be exposed so that others can be forewarned.

Avoid potential Trupanion "bait and switch".  After initial research into pet insurance, Trupanion appeared to be a good choice.   We decided to insure our Golden Retriever Mojo with Trupanion.  Eleven months into our policy we received notice that premiums would more than double at first anniversary.  I was stunned and thought this must be a typo or miscalculation.  We had only filed minimal claims that didn't even come close to the amount we had spent on premiums.  I Emailed Trupanion and asked for clarification.  Trupanion responded that market segment for our dog justified this increase.  Let me get this straight, one year old purebred golden retrievers are a health risk justifying more than doubling premiums?!
Recognizing Trupanion was no longer a reliable source for coverage we conducted more detailed research into pet insurance companies.  Healthy Paws Pet Insurance and Foundation scored top marks in all categories.  We promptly shifted Mojo's coverage to Healthy Paws.  18 months later, I could not be more happy than being with Healthy Paws (separate review posted in San Diego location).
Mojo and I recommend avoiding Trupanion as unforeseen, unbelievable rate increases are a concern.

We recommend Trupanion to all of our friends, as we have had the best experiences, service, knowledgeable and helpful staff. We have been using Trupanion for 3 years now and have had exceptional service each and every time.
It can be stressful to deal with a hurt or sick pet, but I am pleased to say that Trupanion relieves the financial
stress of having to come up with thousands when your pet is in critical need of healthcare.
Trupanion has paid thousands of dollars in medical and surgical care for our dog and they are always there when we need them! They do not raise premiums or try to get out of paying.
Before using Trupanion Insurance, we used VPI and AKC insurance, with both companies I was very dissatisfied and unhappy. VPI and AKC were slow to pay claims, would try to deny claims and not very helpful. Stay clear of those two companies.

They have been good. They pay about 90% of all claims versus other carriers. They are straight forward and simple.

They do not have hardly any exclusions which is very helpful. You would say every dog breed has what you might want to call some may consider hereditary problems. You cannot get away from that. Other than that, they do not have what is called a wellness, like every year I take my dogs to get her heart checked and their check ups and stuff, they do not cover that but that does not bother me. Trupanion cover the pre x-rays in case you think there might be something wrong. They cover the treatment to surgery and again, it is your deductible that you pick.

I pay about $46 monthly for premiums. I recommend them highly and think they are a very good company. They are very prompt with their payments and their people are very knowledgeable. When I talk with them they are upper crust employees. They have accident and illness coverage and offer a 30 day money back guarantee. They cover 90-percent of the actual veterinary bill; there are no payment limits and no limits on hereditary conditions. They have deductibles from $0 to $1,000, premium coverage will not change on the pet's birthday or filing claims and there is no extra charge for covering chronic conditions. I got a 24/7 lost and found pet ID tag when I enrolled.

I remember Trupanion's premiums were really good value for money. They covered everything we needed to have covered. We had just gotten a new puppy and we searched around for what we really wanted for insurance. When we found them online, it was so easy to deal with them and so easy to sign up. We were able to talk to an agent if we wanted to, which my husband did because he had some specific questions. They answered the questions really well and provided a very good service that we felt we needed.

My puppy had to have bowel surgery at 5 months to remove a foreign body he had eaten. After he kept eating bark outside and getting sick, our dog trainer recommended I purchase insurance through Trupanion. Sure enough, no sooner had I purchased the insurance, he ate bark again and got sick. He was sick immediately following the waiting period.
I have spent the last 2 months trying to get Trupanion to pay the 90% of his multi-thousand dollar treatment and subsequent surgery for intussusception. First they refused on the grounds that the second surgery was caused by the first surgery and therefore preexisting. Then they refused on the grounds that the intusssception was an illness, not an accident. In other words, they have found every excuse in the book to not pay for very expensive treatment to save my 5-month-old puppy's life. There is a longer waiting period on illness but although I cannot prove it was ingestion of the wood that caused intussusception, neither can they prove it did not.
In my opinion Trupanion is a total waste of money. I will be canceling my insurance. There is no point in paying for insurance if they are going to find excuses to not cover. It's not like human health insurance!
Response from Trupanion
"Hi Customer, I am so sorry to hear about your puppy's incident. It appears that your claims adjuster has been in communication with you as to the reason for the denial (due to a history of ingesting foreign objects prior to policy coverage). However, we do have a third-party appeals process you may choose to pursue in which the claim is sent to a third-party veterinarian specialist who has no affiliation with Trupanion to determine the outcome of the claim. I do hope you will look into this so that there is clarity on the whole situation and I apologize that you have had a frustrating first experience with us. -Stacy"

I pay $50 monthly for a $100 deductible; then they pay 90-percent of the balance. If the deductible is higher the monthly payment is less. They handle the claims over the phone and they are professional and prompt in taking care of what I needed.

I recommend that all pet owners get insurance on their pet, it is as important as having your own health insurance. I always hope to not have to use the insurance but the occasional times that we have had to do Xrays, surgery or medication the insurance has always been worth its weight in gold.
We have been using Trupanion for 3 years now and have always had our
claims reviewed quickly and the insurance check mailed out within a week
or two of submitting the claim. The company has always been
professional, kind, knowledgeable and friendly. We enjoy supporting a
local business but we also like the high level of customer service.
I highly recommend Trupanion, their rates are low and their service is exceptional.

when I called to cancel, they tried to advise me of all the illnesses and problems that my dog's breed could possibly get, in order for me to keep the policy. I had a yorkie before, and she had several long-term medical conditions. The costs of those would be less than the premiums I would conceivably pay over her lifetime. Their scare tactic method of persuasion did nothing but reaffirm my desire to cancel my association with them.

Trupanion was developed by veterinarians. You can take your dog anywhere and you have a deductible, so you pay based on what the deductible is and how old your pet was when you first signed up with them. Trupanion does not pay for regular office visits and check-ups, but if your pet has an operation or develops some health problems, they pay ninety percent of everything. They are very reliable.

They are pretty similar to most of the pet insurances except for one thing. They cover preexisting conditions which is rare. I could buy Trupanion for an older dog that is already being treated for other things. What I have to do is wait thirty days from the time that I buy the policy and then they cover. What I liked about them is I can ask for a quote right off of the website and they will quote me a premium. They tell me what I get in the basic policy and the basic policy is usually what everybody would probably opt for but they have some extra coverage that I can add on to my policy if I want. It is like cremation services to bury the pet or when the pet dies and things like that. That adds to the premium. On the website they have a sliding scale. They give me a quote with $500 deductible but if I want less deductible the premium is going to be higher but if I want more deductible I can go up as high as $1000 and the premium comes down. The difference in price from $500 deductible to $250 deductible was $10 a month, so as far as I am concerned the price is excellent. I cannot grade their quality because I just bought it yesterday. I don't know how easy it is to file a claim with them or anything.

I have submitted claims before because my puppies have digestive issues. Nothing has been covered because they say it was a pre-existing condition. They could not be more pleasant to deal with but they just haven't paid for anything yet. I just submitted a claim and I got an email back last week saying the claim has been submitted but I haven't heard anything back. I am assuming that it is going to be denied because it is the same issue. They are very pleasant and they go through all the claims very quickly. Everything has been denied so far but I don't know if it is their fault. I pay monthly and it is not that expensive.

They're good. I have researched them, you can pick the plan, and the deductible you want. I have heard they are the best and it's not a commercial. That's why I want to recommend them. I don't know what deductible I am going to get yet. I would give them high ratings until I use their services which I plan to do.
