Sherri taught me how to separate myself from 90% of job hunters and rise to the top of an interview process. She manages to keep track (seemingly in her head) of your goals, actions and progress. How she does this for over 50 people simultaneously I have no idea. But if you commit to something, make sure to follow through as she will remember and keep you to task.
WARNING – belonging to this group takes commitment, work and follow-through. Don’t join if you are simply looking for someone else to find you a job. Put in the time, learn the skills and you will start seeing results in a short period of time. Along the way, you will become a better networker, smarter job-seeker, and maybe even happier in your career. You’ll also meet a diverse group of people who help each other in their career/work-life goals.
If you are out of work, it is required that you attend the Monday night meetings every week. At $20 per week, it is a bargain – especially if you listen and put in the work. If you are an employed member, you’re on the “maintenance plan” and need to attend at least once per quarter. There is also a mandatory Networking Workshop required upon joining the group.
Through encouragement from Sherri and group members, I eventually committed full time to my own business. I still belong to the group to continue honing my networking skills.
I have worked with Sherri on and off for years (as my layoffs warranted). She IS a motivator (at least the reviewer got that right). But somewhere along the line, you misunderstood Sherri's role in helping you. IT IS NOT SHERRI'S RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND YOU A JOB. Sherri prepares YOU to find YOUR job. She helps YOU set goals. She helps YOU figure out what worked or didn't work for you in past jobs so YOU can identify strategies you might need to change. She offers a variety of workshops that help you figure all this out. And, yes, her clients are from a broad spectrum of backgrounds (isn't that what makes life interesting?). If your intention was to meet with a group of people and quot;in a very defined professionand quot;, why didn't you find a coach that specifies in THAT profession? And last, but not least, Sherri PROVIDES NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES for you to meet people who might be able to help you.
Sherri strongly encourages NETWORKING, because you never know who you might meet that might know somebody who knows somebody who might have a connection. Ever heard of six degrees of separation? When you sign up with Sherri to work with her, it's just that - you work TOGETHER to prepare yourself for the job hunt. She DOES NOT look for jobs for you. She helps you prepare for the hunt. She helps you customize your resume to positions that YOU identify of interest. She helps you write cover letters that get attention and score the initial phone call from an employer. She helps you prepare for phone interviews, in person interviews, second interviews, and landing the job. And her NETWORKING MEETINGS (not PARTIES) are avenues for you to brainstorm, share, commiserate, and celebrate the pitfalls and triumphs of a job search. Being unemployed (or in transition) or looking for something different is hard, especially in these times. That's why people seek out the help of a Career Coach.
Sherri is tough. She expects you to live up to your part of the bargain when you sign up with her. That means you need to do the research, do the work make the calls, write the letters, customize multiple resumes, network and anything else she suggests because SHE IS THE EXPERT!
You mentioned PARTIES (perhaps you are anti-social and that's why and quot;partiesand quot; bother you). YES, Sherri and her husband DO open their home a couple times a year for NETWORKING POTLUCK PARTIES. These are usually HUGE events where 80-100 people (HER CLIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES) show up to socialize, eat and enjoy time together; it's a time of camaraderie, because let's face it, at the Monday night NETWORKING EVENTS, Sherri is ALL ABOUT SETTING GOALS AND GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS. Monday night NETWORING EVENTS are NOT parties, so get off your high horse about it. If you and quot;could not make a connection with someone that would be able to further my career or make a transitionand quot;, then YOU WEREN'T TRYING. I'm willing to bet you were one of those people who sat on a chair or sofa and didn't speak to anybody in the group; I'm sure people tried, but you'd already made up your mind that these people weren't going to help you.
You mention and quot; Also, the months seemed to be going by quickly with no progress - too slow of a job search method for someone out of work. She may be perfect for some, but not for me.and quot; The majority of folks who become clients of Sherri's are and quot;out of workand quot;, either by choice or usually by force (lay offs). It's not a game and Sherri doesn't play games. IT. IS. HARD. WORK. TO. FIND. WORK. Get it?
And, yes, there are a lot of emails that go out from this group and you are expected to read the emails (because, hey, you're unemployed, so what else are you doing?) and, again, it's about NETWORKING and maybe you couldn't make a connection with someone that would be able to further YOUR career, but if you had participated actively maybe YOU could have helped someone else. GEE! IMAGINE THAT!
Bottom line, Sherri is worth every single penny she is paid. She has been in the business a long time. She's got the resources. She's got the experience. She's got the NETWORK. She's tough. She expects you to do your homework and if you don't, she's going to kick your butt and maybe yell at you or fuss at you. But that's why YOU HIRED HER!
Rock on Sherri!
Also, the number of emails received from this group is unbelieveable. I was constantly getting pinged for messages not really related to me.
"It seems this review was written on behalf of your husband, since you and I have never met and have not worked together. Without firsthand knowledge of the conversations I had with your husband, it is understandable that you could only present your interpretation of the services I offer. To clarify, the two events your husband attended (referenced as "parties") were actually weekly meetings attended by a structured networking group that follows a "group code" approved by members. The group has been in existence for 12 years and is composed of individuals of all ages, backgrounds and employment situations. Presently, several of our original members are still engaged with the group, and only 1 of our 60 members is unemployed. Any person interested in the group is made aware of the makeup of the group and our mission at the onset. They are provided with the group code and must agree to follow our established group rules before they participate. Each week, there are specific topics discussed that have been voted on and published long in advance of the meeting. Participants commit to the meetings they wish to attend and attendee lists are sent out weekly (probably some of the many emails you referenced). There is careful preparation invested in planning the meetings and the breakout discussion groups so that people will maximize their experience. Because members know who is attending in advance they are able to prepare for meaningful conversations. When members sign up to attend a meeting and are a no-show, it does result in a charge for missed attendance. This is clearly stated in our code and on each meeting announcement. (Probably more of the many emails you referenced). The group is designed to provide a support forum for people wishing to change their employment circumstances. Techniques for job search and career development are discussed at each meeting. At no point do I or any group member suggest that we will find someone a job. Our members have attended a series of workshops to show them how to get a job, change jobs or grow their careers. The processes learned through the workshops I provide require dedication and active participation from each member, and when followed, people achieve their employment goals. Your husband had not yet attended any of the workshops, although he had been scheduled to attend this month. It is unfortunate that he was unable to find the time to fully participate or attend the sessions that would have addressed his needs. Had the path we discussed in the single consulting session we had been followed, it is very likely he would have had different results. If there is anything else that may have seemed unclear about the services I offer or the expectations set when I met with your husband, I would be happy to clarify directly with you.
