Kohl Construction transformed our main living spaces (kitchen, living room, bathroom), and they were a pleasure to work with. Their communication was stellar—every email, call, and concern was promptly addressed, making us feel well taken care of throughout the remodel. The team was dedicated to capturing our vision, paying attention to every little detail to ensure that nothing was missed. Plus, we appreciated that they provided great value without compromising quality, which made the investment well worth it. Our home now feels both modern and comfortable. We feel so fortunate to have found Kohl Construction. This was our first and only major remodel project and we had a few false starts with other contractors. As soon as we started working with Kohl we knew we had found the right people. A local family business with great references helped our decision, but throughout the project we were getting presented with honest and transparent information at the right time. Communication was clear, consistent and respectful but above all the project was delivered on time, in scope and within budget!

Paul Kohl was our general contractor for a massive rebuild/remodel in which we more than doubled the size of our house. He was recommended to us by Jay Lazerwitz (see review). Paul does “cost plus” work. We were wary of this at first but his estimate was very detailed and accurate, and in fact the real cost came in below his estimate. The work was of the utmost quality. We stressed our priority on structural soundness and utility rather than cosmetic style. Paul respected this and his people delivered very well indeed. Paul had a dedicated crew of three to four workers on our site five days a week until the work was done. The site did not stand idle for any amount of time. The workers on Paul’s crew are absolutely perfect gentlemen. If I had a fourteen year old daughter I would not hesitate to bring her along on my site visits. They are polite, courteous, deferential and helpful (they gladly helped us unload cabinets and slabs of granite we brought from Second Use). They worked together harmoniously and we never heard a voice raised in anger. Jorge` is the framing supervisor and he is a major reason why Paul has a successful business. A framing genius, he saved us a lot of trouble with glitches in the plans, executed modifications gladly and kept a careful and necessary eye on sub-contractors. He offered his expertise and advice to us in our work (we did much of the interior work) and taught us much. He and his crew were a pleasure to be around.

Terribly. They never successfully estimated (budget or time) any part of the job. They were consistently late, even on an estimate of "We'll do this tomorrow." They NEVER successfully performed work on time. The end of the project dragged on interminably. I had to create my own list of "you really need to finish these things before you call the job complete" which were things like a terrible rattle in a door they replaced, various stickers on things they never got around to removing, a cracked door on a washing machine (that they claim they didn't break!), and more. Many of the things I had issues with were about the finishing quality of them. For example: they took down and eventually re-hung some bookshelves in our office. When I happened to look at them, I noticed that nearly half of the screws that had previously existed to hold the brackets to the walls and hold the bookshelves to the brackets were entirely missing. Had we put books on these shelves, the shelves would have pulled the brackets out of the walls. Another example: they took down and stored the exterior blinds on our house for the extent of their work. They were working perfectly when they took them down. When they replaced them they were not working at all. I will have to pay hundreds of dollars, maybe thousands of dollars, to another company to get these blinds repaired to how they were before Paul Kohl Construction did their work. I have no confidence in their work at all. I will absolutely never hire or recommend anyone hire them. If I find a friend using them I will do everything I can to dissuade this from going further.

Paul will provide a detailed estimate of time and costs. These are usually reliable, but the unexpected can (and does) happen. So be prepared for occasional delays and cost overruns. Paul always dealt with these promptly and fairly. Each time we have hired Paul, we have been very pleased with the result.

We made a deal that if he exceeded the estimated cost of the remodeling, he would not charge his profits, but charge only the labor and material costs. He ensured that the cost didn t exceed the estimate, and that was positive about him. They were punctual as well, but their work was mediocre.
