When windows came, one was missing and one was broken.
A couple weeks later, the missing windows came and were installed.
Per request, installer removed and replaced exterior trim that was visibly too thick when looking out of the replacement panes. There is some glue residue on one pane which I haven't figured out how to clean up yet. Per request, they replaced a torn screen, repaired some gaps in trim. Later when I was staining the new frames, I noticed some nails were protruding and needed to be set.
After staining the Milgard windows, when it was time to close them one was in the left track but had slipped from the right side of the track. When I tried to align the window in the tracks, the right spring shot up damaging the side. I didn't want to force the window back in. I called the business owner who referred me to Milgard. Milgard came, snapped the broken piece of plastic in half and instructed us to glue it back with acrylic glue. The window seems to function OK.
I was impressed with Michan's knowledge and design experience right away. I hoped to have a number of dated windows reshaped, which she suggested before I even brought it up. We have one room in our house that literally has almost an entire wall of windows. Michan had several suggestions for different window options with a variety of price ranges, whereas the other companies I received estimates from said I was limited to only one or two options. She really looked at our house and family to determine what would work best for us (we have young children). She was able to provide us with an option that provided the safety I wanted (those kids are very active) along with new functionality (our old windows didn't open; Michan's design allowed us to have several windows with awnings at the top, which made cooling our house much easier in the summer). The cost was right in the middle of several estimates; she did a great job of looking at ways to save us money, but still give us the aesthetic and functions we wanted.
The crew was excellent - very nice, professional and really took pride in their work. They replaced our windows during a record setting cold snap that winter and were really great about making sure we knew what they were doing each day so we could plan our schedule around the work and stay warm - our comfort and convenience was a priority with these guys. They did an excellent job making sure everything was cleaned up and secured each day (the job took about four or five days if I recall correctly). We've been so happy with our new windows and have had no problems. Many compliments from everyone that comes over. I would highly recommend Keystone Windows to anyone and would definitely use them again.
We will definitely call Keystone again when we are ready to replace the rest of the windows in the house!
The service experience with Michan was awful. She was disorganized and didn't want to provide me a written quote. She had us come to the office to provide the quote and then showed up late and kept us waiting for over half an hour while she prepared the quote. She was taking phone calls all the while and made multiple mistakes requiring revisions. We had our baby along with us, so the waiting was very unpleasant and frustrating. She also made comments about our parenting skills that offended me.
The final insult from Keystone came when we received a notice of contractors lien from Milgard who manufactured the windows. This means that Keystone does not pay for their windows in a timely manor, so the manufacturer then threatens to place liens against the homes of their customers. No lien was placed, but when I called Keystone about it, they dismissed me and never followed through, implying that I was silly for being concerned about a potential lien being placed on my home. They never called me back on it.
All that said, the windows are very nice, the price was very good. They have a good product, but dealing with the sales end of the company was not pleasant.
The lead discussed my options. The first being getting an exterminator to take care of the carpenter ants. Once that had been taken care of, he could continue with the install. However, he was able to continue the removal of the bay window and sliding glass door. He wrote up a change order of the extra work to be done and the cost.
As there were two crews, one went to work on the demo of the bay window , which now had to be completely rebuilt. The other went to work on the sliding glass door replacement.
My house was built in 1944. The previous owners were also quite "handy" and did much renovation work themselves. And it has held up for 20 years. However, when the sliding glass doors went, it was discovered that the opening was not sqaure and had to be adjusted.
By the end of Friday, I did have a working sliding glass door and a big hole where my bay window used to be, now covered in plywood.
With the carpenter ants taken care of, the work continued on Monday. And by the end of the day, all was finished.
I really enjoyed the crew that did work on the windows. In fact, I felt bad when they discovered so many problems and had to work that much harder to finish the job. But I guess that is where the professinalism really came thru: I was informed of the problems and was consulted in what to do next and how it would be done (obviously I had to sign off on everything). And while I know the crew had expected to pop out old windows and pop in new all on a Friday (trust me, I would have loved that too!) - all the demolition, rebuild, install and clean up was done with great attitude (and good sense of humor) and attention to detail.
Two months of winter wind, rain and snow with no problems, Much more quiet and less drafty.
He explained the process and gave us an expectation for timeframe. He said that we would have a visit for final measurements and then they would order the door and window which should only 1-2 weeks. When the items arrived they would schedule a time for installation, which could be a 4-6 weeks out but it was possible that we might be sooner if something opened up since we were a small (<1 day) job.
The next scheduled visit was for final measurements. A different gentleman showed up on time and was completed quickly. He re-iterated the timeframe provided to us from the salesman.
We then did not have any communication from Keystone for over 3 weeks (late June now). When I called on the weekend I was told to leave a message with the one person who schedules installation (they worked M-F). We made contact the next week and I was told the door and window had just arrived and they set me up for the next available timeslot which was July 19th.
I was contacted again a few days before the 19th as a reminder. I was told that they would be onsite between 7:30 am and 8:30 am.
2 gentlemen arrived on the 19th shortly after 8:30 am. They were professional. They prepared the work environments, they replaced the window and door and then cleaned up the areas and were done around 2 pm. I am particularly pleased by the extra effort they made when working with the lock on the door. I provided the lock (it was new) and it had poor instructions, lots of parts and had to be completely pulled apart and put back together (it was setup for a door swinging in the opposite direction). They spent 30 minutes after installing it on small adjustments to make sure that the door would shut and lock perfectly smooth and easy.
Overall I have been satisfied with Keystone's effect and execution. I would use and recommend this company for any door and window replacement. The price of the door was more expensive than I would prefer, but my wife chose it based on design not price and Keystone's cost to us for the door was less than the competitor. I would have prefered more pro-active communication during the process, but they responded to me quickly when I contacted them.
