This group is superb. They were professional, clean, punctual, detailed...everything one could want in a contractor. And they were nice people. They are a local Ballard family with lots of ties to the area. I recommend them without reservation and would use them again.
We did not have as much success with the architect they recommended, although in the end it worked out. I suggest being _very_ clear about what you want especially if it is not what "most people" want.

We are very pleased with Jackson Remodeling, and especially pleased with Dan Bower who did the actual work. Jackson / Dan recently removed unwanted paneling from our living room and refinished the walls underneath. In addition, Dan refinished the opening around our front windows, added baseboards where there were none and tied the new trim work in with the existing trim in the rest of the house. Especially conscious to keeping the costs close to budget, Dan only recommended work that was needed and advised against changes that were costly and unnecessary. The project was completed on time and well within budget, resulting in an impressive finished result! Thanks Jackson and Dan!

Overall, the experience was great. From start to finish, everything went very well. They were helpful with the planning and design phase. They did a good job!

We loved the results and their on-site manager was top-notch. They do precise clean work and any problems we had were dealt with fairly and promptly. The only thing we did not like was their designer- it was obvious she didn't really get our style and she made mistakes in measurements but from what I remember they were transitioning between design firms.

The Jacksons saved our basement. We asked for an initial quote for our project from them about 1 year earlier...and, honestly, we choked at the price and thought we could find someone to do it for less...BIG mistake on our part! Long & short, the contractor we chose, Ed Johanson, gave us a favorably low quote, (on which we based a cash-out refinance), but after months of discussions and materials purchased, he finally said he couldn't do the job for that price, leaving us with a stripped-to-the-foundation useless basement. At that point, I called Jackson Remodeling in a very contrite panic. They worked with our restrictive budget, doing the "heavy lifting" as Eric describes it, (framing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, insulation, windows, sheetrocking), leaving most of the finish work for us to complete, as agreed. They fast-tracked our project. Their carpenters were willing to try new techniques & materials I suggested. As with most remodeling projects, we had some surprises, which since we maintained clear, open communication throughout the job, were resolved fairly easily. I appreciated their commitment to 'green' construction practices; they willingly used salvaged and low-VOC materials as well as recycling much of the remnants. Everyone at JRL was very professional. They worked with us as respected & respectful *partners* on our project. They respected our privacy and schedules. They made sure the work site was left neat at the end of each day. We will use them again if we have any new projects and have recommended them to friends.

They did a good job. Michael was a bit flakey about communication. However, we asked him to do the work in a specific time period, and he did it.

Jackson is a hands-on design-build firm, and we had a smallish but unusual decking and stairs project. Although we were a bit skeptical that we needed the full design build firm for the project, we felt that Jackson would work for the project after the first meeting. The planning and design phase took much longer than expected. Part of the blame fell on us, and part on Jackson, but there were several communications problems. Jackson eventually became somewhat unresponsive and missed a couple of deliverable dates. We ended up terminating Jackson Remodeling shortly after receiving the estimate/proposal, which was both twice the cost of other proposals we have received and the barest-boned option. We have little to show for our investment in the initial design work besides some rough sketches and measurements. No schema or drawings were delivered.

"DESIGNING TO A BUDGET IS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR ANY DESIGN/BUILD REMODELER, AND WE ARE NO EXCEPTION. WE TAKE OUR CLIENTS' BUDGETS SERIOUSLY, AND HAVE DEVELOPED A SYSTEM THAT IS USUALLY VERY EFFECTIVE AT ENSURING THAT PROJECT AND BUDGET ALIGN. THIS SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE CLIENTS KEEP THEIR CONTRACTOR GUESSING AS FAR AS THEIR BUDGET. INSTEAD, IT DEPENDS ON A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH, WHERE CLIENT AND CONTRACTOR WORK TOGETHER. IN THIS SITUATION, THERE SEEMED TO BE SOME "DISCONNECT", WHERE FOR WHATEVER REASON WE DIDN'T SEEM TO BE ON THE SAME PAGE. WE WARNED OUR CLIENT THAT CERTAIN ELEMENTS OF THEIR DESIGN EXCEEDED THEIR BUDGET, BUT WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CONTINUE ANYWAY. I CAN ONLY SPECULATE THAT THE LOWER "BIDS" WERE FOR THE LESS INVOLVED APPROACH THAT WE HAD SUGGESTED. WHILE WE ARE MORE INTERESTED IN SOLVING PROBLEMS THAN PLACING BLAME, WE APPRECIATE THE THE MEMBER'S COMMENT ACCEPTING SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITY. AND AS A CONTRACTOR WHO STRIVES TO DESIGN TO A BUDGET, WE ARE LOOKING IN THE MIRROR TO LEARN FROM THIS SITUATION AND DETERMINE HOW WE CAN BETTER SERVE OUR CLIENTS."

On 20th, August. Ryan and Eric arrived on time and got started on the job which was estimated to take approx. one week. The job was completed on 22 Aug. with great professionalism and dedication to the job, giving 110%.
