It was difficult to get information after placing the order, on the phone or even going to the store. Only the person who wrote up the order knew anything, so you had to get lucky and be there when the person you had dealt with was there. Some of these people were incredibly bad about returning phone calls.
The sliding door was ordered to be finished, but when it arrived on site the interior side was still bare wood. The response from Franks was and quot;those come with the wood unfinishedand quot; even though we were clear we needed the doors finished and thought that was what we were paying for. The exterior was finished, poorly. There are missing spots. When we reported this it got a shrug.
We wanted to be sure the exterior color of the sliding door matched that of the french door. They could not find the paperwork from the french door, so we picked what we thought was the correct color. What they did not tell us was the color pallettes were not the same for the two doors. Now we have to find out how to prep the sliding door and paint it the correct color, in addition to doing the clear finish on the interior we thought we had ordered and paid for.
Frank's business process is primarily paper and individual employee based and it can make it very difficult to deal with them, especially depending on who you are dealing with.
We don't plan to deal with Frank Lumber again.
Frank Lumber/The Door Store has a very large staff; I was assisted by Kevin, who made sure the whole process moved smoothly. First, he figured out what type of door I needed based on a photo I provided. He checked on the special order price for me and ordered the door, which came the next day. I took in the old door to provide accurate measurements for the placement of the hardware. He said that the door would be mortised and drilled and ready to go the following week. When I expressed dismay at being without a bathroom door for a week (I had out of town company coming, and it would have been quite awkward not to have a bathroom door during their visit), he put a rush on the order, and it was ready the next day. The service I received was exceptional in every respect. The Door Store was recommended to me by my contractor, and I can easily see why he likes to do business there.
In my case, I wanted to replace my existing backdoor with a door that has a large dog door in it. The existing door had panels in it. In order to have a good fit, a dog door requires a flush surface. When I broght my old door to the store and they immediately suggested I replace it with a fiberglass door because it was a standard size and needed no height or width tailoring. The exact door I needed required a flush surface so they had to special order it and it took about 1.5 weeks to arrive. I purchased a special dog door separately that had double flaps in order to minimize air leakage. I gave them the installation template from the dog door box and they flawlessly cut the hole in the door and pre-drilled the screw holes. The top half of the door had a large sliding window with a screen. I installed the dog door and lockset hardware my self when I got home. Everything fit flawlessly. The door I have now is really sweet and my dog loves it. I took the old door and put it in the garage in case the next owner of the house prefers not to have a dog door. The fiberglass door cost half as much as a wooden door and is more durable. I couldn't be more pleased.
I needed to replace my front door maily because I had done a hack job on putting in a dog door myself. I wanted a new door without the dog door because I was in the process of moving my dog's fenced in area to the back of my house. My existing front door was not a standard stock size. I couldn't find anything to replace it at any of the big box stores. However, Frank Lumber The Door Store can tailor make doors or, as in my case, take a large door and trim it down to fit. My new door is made of fur and has a set of 8 each 5and quot;x5and quot; decorative windows built into the top. Even though they had to trim an inch off each side of the door and cut a few incheds off the bottom the door hangs perfectly in the old door frame. I haven't installed the lockset hardware yet, but based on my experience with the backdoor, I am sure I will have no problem. I am currently in the process of sealing, staining, and putting on a clear polyeurathane coat. When it is done it will look good and work perfectly. Yay!
I feel really fortunate that I found this store and highly recommend it. I worked with a different salesman for each door and both of them were friendly, conscientious, and easy to work with. Even the guy in the workshop who tailored my doors was impressive with his attention to detail and concern for my getting exactly what I wanted. Based on my own personal experience, I absolutely recommend using this place for replacement doors.
Although they were not the cheapest, Chet professionalism gave us confidence that we would get a quality product or else he would totally handle it until we do.
We ordered the door and it was ready in the time promised. We love our door. Our friends and neighbors comment on it, even the mailman and the guy that picks up the trash. They all comment that our new and quot;woodand quot; door is beautiful. It's fiberglass :-)
install. When the door arrived we found it came from their factory and
not from the catalog factory and the color (natural fir) was nothing
like the example we picked. I wanted to refuse the door but the manager
insisted that it would darken to the tone we originally chose. So I
brought it home, had it installed and two months later, same color as
when we picked it up. Not darkening at all. I am not happy with the
door color, or Frank's response to my concerns about it Now that it's
installed, I cannot return. I would not use these guys again for
anything but closet doors. If you want to make sure you get the door
you want, go somewhere else.
We had started at the nearby big-box Home Depot and Lowes stores, which didn't stock what we needed though were willing to order for a somewhat high price. Frank's blows away their selection, a good reminder not to over-rely on the and quot;big boxesand quot;, as specialty stores can be wonderful! Seattle has some great plumbing, electrical and hardware specialists... but I digress.
Once we found the door we needed, we asked the clerk to recommend finishing products. He was very helpful, even recommending techniques for best results.
I don't know when we'll need a door again, but we would certainly go here first.
