Our goal was to remodel the house to live on one level with aging in place in mind and later on be able to create a legal apartment in the daylight basement. In order to downsize we would need to add on to our house. It was also very important to us that the remodel not look like a remodel.
We wanted to work with Better Builders based on word of mouth, reader recommendations in the West Seattle Blog and Angie?s List reviews. In early talks with Bill, the owner, he suggested that my husband and I could do some of the work ourselves as this would keep costs down since we had a tight budget. His willingness to be so flexible won us over. We partnered with them and they did a fantastic job of making our vision come to life.
The construction schedule they presented us with was realistic. Once they broke ground the work continued for three months. They didn?t disappear for days on end like other contractor horror stories people tell. They stuck to my budget and I didn?t get nickel and dimed. Any problems that came up were quickly resolved which made for a stress free experience. Their project manager Pete is a master at problem solving.
We had only two communication problems. One involved the architect not including us in a very important email and the other involved contract terminology about something that was unique to my project which resulted in an extra charge.
Overall everyone was incredibly professional, punctual and terrific. They all treated us like our project was the most important thing even though they were also working on other jobs.
We ended up with a high quality, seamless remodel that has completely changed our lives for the better.
Ultimately, whoever you choose to work with involves going with your gut feeling. If I had to select one word to describe this company it would be ?Trustworthy?.
I then discovered that the job needed to be permitted, which ran contrary to what I was told at first. I brought this up with the main office. They danced around the issue until I threatened legal action against them, at which point they got a permit and had it inspected after the fact. (Very shady, but at least I have a document signed by the City.)
If I had known that this would be the experience, I never would have signed with Better Builders. This has been a waste of time, energy and money.
We are very pleased with their workmanship and will certainly use them in the future.
Throughout the process, Bill worked through all our changes and ideas in a very open and respectful manner. The quality of the work was great and we are very happy with the final product!
Throughout the remodel, Bill was extremely responsive to all my questions and requests. Bill, his employees and the subcontractors were all very polite and kept the site clean throughout the two-week project (this was particularly important to me since I have children, including a newborn). The quality of work was also excellent, and Bill has promptly circled back with me on a couple of follow-on requests. Bill came in at the bid price (and in fact performed some extra rewiring for the bathroom vent at no additional cost even though it would have put the contract over).
This was the first remodel I have had performed, and the experience and results were both first rate. The new bathroom is beautiful, and the new layout makes the bathroom feel half again as big.
