I am a small time landlord with a few rental properties and have been in business for about 30 years. Baldwin Drywall and Jeff Balwin are the best company and company owner that I have ever dealt with - Bar None. My absolute favorites in fact. You will not be sorry to have them do work for you.
In a few words--beautifully accomplished, professionally organized and planned, good cleanup afterward--on budget and on time! So now, in a few more words -- the job was not an easy one. The ceiling was around 50 years old. It consisted of sheets of 4 x8 bamboo strips stapled to plywood panels. Jeff and his partner not only took it all down and out, they vacuumed to be sure they got all the staples off the floor afterward. The painting added a finishing touch and gave the project a look of newness which really pleased us. So too, did their work on a small closet in the room which we hadn't even included in the contract. (A significant improvement on what would have been my 'DIY' effort in the coming week).
The same high standard of 'service to our clients' was evident in the bathroom work. Again, it was case of cleaning out very old material and replacing it with new. It too, turned out beautifully done -- along with the caulking applied around the sink (which also was not included in our original discussions with Jeff).
I'd like to extend my highest recommendation to Baldwin Drywall for providing us with the opportunity of benefitting from the effort that they put into and the quality of what they produced to replace and improve our home.
(popcorn) had been removed, demolish a wall with water damage and put up new
drywall, fix assorted holes from electrical work on lathe and plaster walls and
wooden baseboards, complete a partial wall and remove texturizing on walls in
our basement, approximately 700 square feet. Jeff was fantastic to work with,
nice, punctual professional and very knowledgeable about his craft. He had a tough timeline
to work within, he was in between the electrician and the painters (something
he?s definitely used to) and we kept adding to his workload as the electrician
had to cut more holes and trenches. He handled this extra work really well, and worked
longer hours to get it done for us in time. He has excellent attention to
detail and the work he did in our home looks amazing. A great example of this
is how he was able to maintain the integrity of our shadow molding in one room
and create a perfect edge where the new wall connected to the crown molding in
the living room. Not only is Jeff a reliable and hard worker, but his finished
product looks wonderful as well! He?s also got a great attitude and was
extremely gracious when I added to his workload ? he could have kept adding to
his original bid, it wouldn?t have been unreasonable for him to do so, but he
stuck to it and delivered more than I had expected, while staying on budget. I
would absolutely hire him again and hope to do so in the future!
2. Quality - When the work was finished on day 2, I noticed the texture material was very unevenly applied in a number of places and not consistent (some areas too much concentrated coverage causing texture to not even be visible, other areas not nearly enough coverage and paint color underneath was very visible). Because BD crew left the house after job was completed and before I could get home to do a walk-through w/ them there, I had to ask Jeff to come back to address my concerns and he initially said he would have to charge me for the time (say WHAT???) if he came back. I was shocked to say the least that someone who showed up nearly 1 hr. late THREE times now wanted to charge ME for his time??? Eventually, Jeff agreed to come "free of charge" and then tried to convince me that the inconsistencies wouldn't matter or show up once paint is applied. I know from past experience this is NOT true, esp. in rooms with a lot of light!
3. Professionalism - Reluctantly, Jeff said he would fix the areas I pointed out and his idea of "fixing" the problem was showing up with a can of texture spray (I could have done that myself but that's not what I was paying BD to do)! He also brought along a young teenager (his son?) to help him fix these issues and I was shocked because I hired 'professional contractors' to do the work, not kids. The other big issue was that when I came home after the job was completed and Jeff & worker had left, I found footprints of texture material throughout the living room and down the hallway and sprayed texture material was visible around the entire perimeter of these rooms as well. BD had determined that since I was replacing the carpet eventually, they didn't need to protect it and took the liberty of trashing it (I had company arriving in two days to stay with me and now the carpeting looked horrible!). This is a complete lack of professionalism on Jeff's part!
4. Resolution - Because Jeff arrived 1 hr. late to the final appt. to correct the issues and I had a previous appt elsewhere, I asked Jeff to come back to do the final work but needed it done before my guests arrived. When Jeff failed to schedule a new time with me, I had to hire another another drywall contractor and professional carpet cleaning company to get the work done, which cost me an additional $199. I deducted this amount from the original invoice amount of $1,752 and promptly mailed a check to BD. The check was cashed and needless to say I was SHOCKED when I received an email indicating I still had an outstanding balance of $199 and that if it wasn't paid, a lien would be put on my house. I have since explained to BD that, legally speaking, the matter is closed and no other action can be taken against me.
5. Other - To make matters worse, I discovered a few days later that an expensive japanese maple tree in my front yard had been sprayed with white texturzing material (as Jeff or his partner cleaned their equipment I'm guessing?) and I can't get the stuff off without breaking the delicate leaves. I'm furious because I had intended to sell the tree and now I cannot. I also found a handful of nails covered with the white texturizing substance on my front lawn (actually my DOG found the nails).
The day before the was to arrive, he called and said they were about half a day behind schedule on a larger job they were working on, and asked if it would be okay for them to arrive in the afternoon instead of the morning. I appreciated him calling and arranging this as soon as he realized they wouldn't be able to keep the original time slot.
When they arrived, they were both very professional and nice. They got to work right away, and I got an email from him about 3 hours later that they had finished the patching portion without issue and would be back the next morning to paint after it had dried. We saw the work they did so far that night, and it looked great, even before being sanded and painted again.
They arrived about 20 min late the next morning, but called to let us know ahead of time again. I had to run out to work again, so I never saw them actually doing the work. However, when we got home, it was as if the holes had never been cut in the ceiling. Really excellent work on patching, matching the texture, and painting.
They had done an extra-careful job of cleaning up, going as far as wiping down our wood floors as they left to ensure there were no footprints. We didn't see a single paint splatter so they must have done a great job of covering and protecting our floors/furniture, mounted TV.
Would definitely recommend and use them again. He mentioned they do all sizes of jobs, from patches like ours to fully finishing out rooms with drywall, so I'm sure something will come up!
