Dan at A1 Best provided the answers. He picked up my tower, took it to his shop and called me the next day with the diagnosis: the HD was indeed broken. I could have simply had him nuke the old HD and buy a new computer, but on his advice I opted to upgrade my old machine. Bottom line? I have a new operating system, much more memory, new 80 gig HD -- no more pain and suffering. It's better than new. Dan returned my super-powered tower and provided lots of tips and advice. Nice guy. I couldn't be happier.
