Negative service experiences Boy, am I angry!!! I hired one of your recommended landscapers. "Above and Beyond". I had just had a terrible job done by a fly by night company and had received a settlement through the courts. I was desperate for a GOOD job this time so I was willing to pay extra for the job I wanted. Above and Beyond appeared very sympathetic to my concerns. I was most outspoken about having a "flat" yard and having the "horsetail" weeds GONE. I also wanted the sprinklers reset so as to cover all areas. The contractor on a number of occasions said that they would accept nothing until the job was DONE. Halfway through the job they asked me for half the $4750.00 estimate. They did not want to give a receipt. I finally paid $2000.00 but demanded receipt. As the work progressed I kept pointing out that the horsetail weeds were still there. "They will be gone" I was assured. The dirt brought in as fill was very rocky but I was assured it would be "croquet field" level. Several sprinklers that I already had were removed because the contractor said they were not needed. Later it was obvious that they were needed but the contractor refused to put them back. They seeded the area without what my wife and I deemed satisfactory leveling and rolling. When the seed had been sewn, the contractor insisted that their job was done and he wanted his money, in full. I said I'd like to hold 3% until I saw some grass. He refused my request. Fullishly I gave him the remainder of what he said I owed, for a total of $4980+. I went on vacation and returned to 4000 square feet of 50% grass and 50% clover. The contractors comment was that it was the soil he brought in for fill that had the clover, and it was not their fault. If I wanted anything done about it, it would cost me more. They still refuse to give me a receipt and I have a rough field of grass and clover. All their talk about being there for me, and redoing it all if need be is totally FALSE!!! Oh, and the horsetail weeds are growing great!! EEK!! Rolf Adams
Response from Above & Beyond Hydroseed Inc
"In November 2011 Customer attempted to sue our company in Small Claims Court. He claimed all of the following issues and attempted to get all of his money back. The Judge found his case not to be credible. Customer was awarded $0. Customer’s complaints are completely unfounded. Customer had horsetail weeds invading his property long before we ever worked there. Horsetail weeds are very difficult to get rid of. We told customer we would spray for them but counseled him that he would have to continue the process after we completed his job, as it is not a one-time procedure. Customer was counseled on how to continue the process. He failed to do so. Customer’s yard was leveled and rolled. In fact, it was rolled more than once due to the massive amounts of rain that fell during our time on this project. Normally, we don’t ask for money prior to our jobs being completed. However, in this case, we had to delay part of the project due to unusual amounts of rainfall. Bills became due on this project and they needed to be paid. We asked customer to pay us for the work we had done up to that point which was about half. This is the only time in almost 10 years of business we’ve ever had to do such a thing. Keeping up on our bills is a priority. Customer did have clover in his yard. We offered to his wife that we would come back and spray for the clover at no charge. She told us she’d have to check with her husband before making that decision. We never heard back from her after that. It is important to note that customer has clover in other areas of the property…areas where we did not perform any work. The clover was not due to any work we did or product we brought in. Clover is a weed and it spreads, just like any other weed. Customer was given a choice to upgrade and pay for the sprinkler heads or have them removed and replaced with his original heads at no extra charge. Customer chose to keep the upgraded sprinkler heads. Customer went to Mexico for a month after we completed his job. During this time no maintenance or care was given at his property. We did not have a maintenance contract with customer. Customer was given a watering and fertilizing guide, as are all of our customers. In addition, he had been counseled on how to continue to get rid of the horsetail weeds. After one month without any maintenance or follow through, it would make sense that the weeds continued to grow. Finally, Customer did not want to hold out 3% until he saw grass grow, as he has stated here. In fact, when we asked to be paid for the balance due at the end of the project, Customer became belligerent, claiming he didn’t want to pay anything until he saw grass grow. Later, Customer wrote in a letter he wanted to hold out 5% until he saw grass grow. Then finally, in Court, Customer said he wanted to hold out approximately $200 until he saw grass grow. Again, Customer’s complaints were found not to be credible in a Court of Law."

They were recommended to us.  It wasn't the best project from the get go.  It took them forever to finish the job.  They ended up sending a lot of different people over because some people didn't even know the job.  There was a lot of re-work.  I think they need better supervision. They bit off more than they could chew but they tried. I would never use them again.
Response from Above & Beyond Hydroseed Inc
"The member ordered specialty pavers that were brand new on the market and therefore had to be ordered. They were not in stock. We ordered the pavers and unfortunately when they arrived, they were not the correct pavers. The mistake was with the supplier, not by Above & Beyond Hydroseed, Inc. This did create a delay in the project. In terms of "re-work", specifics aren't listed therefore we are unable to respond."

He was very creative with his ideas. We told him how we wanted things. He kind of cut corners a little bit. He did marginal work. He did warranty it for a year but I ended up having to call him several times to get things straightened out. Things they said they did, they didn't do. They said they tested the sprinkler system but there's no way they did because there was a huge leak. It wasn't even connected.
Response from Above & Beyond Hydroseed Inc
"I'm not sure what items the member thinks we cut corners on or did marginal work on, as there is no information listed specifically about that. We did in fact test the sprinkler system. Our supervisor remembers that when he showed up to test the system, the member was fixing a pipe that he had broken. The member also had a leak in a brass shut-off valve that was not a part of any work we did for him. However, we did offer if he picked up the part, we would provide the labor, free of charge, and fix the problem - which we did."

Overall, it went great. I really enjoyed working with Jim Hendry. He and I talked a lot, and he gave me helpful advice in order for me to make decisions. One morning we went to the nursery he uses and we drove around on a golf cart and looked at everything. I was able to tell him what I liked, and didn't like. We picked out a couple of the trees I wanted. Then he made the final decisions and brought everything over. The time frame was hindered by the tremendous amount of rain we had in June. I wanted everything completed before my mother came to visit for the first time in mid-July, and they got it done. Jim's crew was great. I felt very comfortable having them around, listening to them joking around (in Spanish), and listening to one of them who frequently broke out in song. I missed that when they were finished. :-) A lot of people pass by our house, walking themselves, their dogs, their kids, etc. We've been in the house 3 years, and I knew everyone was watching what was being done. Even before it was completed, the comments began. All good! People stop and tell me how much they like it; people driving by give me a thumbs up; comments about how it brightens their day, etc. My husband and I love it. Every morning I stand at our big picture window and look out. It gives me a lot of pleasure. I wanted lots of color, and even now in November, there's plenty. I still have some flowers. And other things are turning beautiful fall colors. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all grows and matures over the years.

Jim was very punctual on coming out for an estimate, submitting the estimate, and performing the work. We have a very complicated 12 zone system and Jim got it back in working order. He came to do the work for us on a Saturday by special request. He was professional and knew what he was doing.

Jim Hendry ran the show on this. We talked to him about what we wanted. He made suggestions that proved to be superior to our original ideas, without changing the nature of what we wanted. He (and his crew) first dug trenches, which he then packed with gravel to form a firm foundation. He layed down two layers of stone, making the borders much more stable than had he lain one layer, as we originally requested. The retaining wall was too high, initially, because he did it exactly as we requested. He came back and lowered the wall at no charge to us, in spite of the fact that the error was ours. He and his crew also did a terrific job cleaning up areas of the yard that we have neglected over the winter, due to a tough work schedule. And oh, by the way, the clean up was not part of the request or the bid or the invoice. He did that simply because he thought it needed doing. We couldn't be more happy. Jim and his crew did a wonderful job at a reasonable price in a timely fashion, all while improving significantly on our original vision. Excellent job.

From start to finish it was a pleasure to work with Jim. When he arrived at our house for the initial conversation regarding our project I am aware I was pretty vague on exactly what I wanted. He took my disjointed ideas and designed a beautiful water feature for our back yard. The work was completed in just a few days with no disruption of our daily lives. He kept me well informed of everything that was going on or due to go on. He continually asked if I had any questions or concerns. Our yard was left neat and tidy with all debris hauled off. The only thing I wish is that I had done this sooner. I am really looking forward to sitting out in our backyard this summer enjoying our new waterfall.

After three attempts the job was completed to our satisfaction. First attempt there was a negative slope toward the house which would have caused water to run toward our house. Second attempt the pavers meeting an existing sidewalk were an inch and half too high and would have caused a trip hazard. But after several weeks Jim and his crew got it right and completed the job. Thanks!

Jim and his crew were great. The first meeting with Jim I knew I was going to use Above & Beyond HydroSeed for my landscaping. Jim listened to everything I was asking for. He made suggestions but was always careful to hear what I wanted. He clearly wanted to offer advice without overriding what I wanted. The guys worked for a week in mud, rain and cold. They were friendly, polite and careful to clean up every day before they left. I highly recommend these guys. Not only do they do a wonderful job at a good price, they clearly feel passionate about giving their customers a yard they can love and enjoy.

Significant reduction in water usage is expected with better results than previous system. Above and Beyond did everything as promised. Followed up afterwards and made a few requested adjustments at no charge. Great people. Worked with Jim Hendry.

Jim Hendry came out to give the original bid, we accepted it and he started the demolition . He supervised his crew and rebuilt parts of the wall himself to get everything perfect. We asked him for an extra wall and lights and sod at the end of the project . He worked with me to design the fireplace and to select the materials and to make it to my specifications. The final cost was higher than the bid due to the additions we asked for.

Jim did the repairs quickly and professionally. We haven't had any problems with our system since. Their hourly labor rate was about half that of the other (highly rated) firm I contacted for a quote.

I couldn't really envision what I wanted done but knew something needed to be done in my front yard. Jim Hendry came and listened to what I had to say and then made suggestions. We agreed on what to quote. He quoted with everything separately listed. The total was more than I had budgeted so I picked what was most important and Jim adjusted the quote accordingly. Jim was very punctual and professional. The name of the company truly represents the kind of service I received "above & beyond" what you would normally expect. Jim is a great guy and I would not hesitate to recommend him and will certainly use him again for future projects.

I met with Jim Hindrix from Above & Beyond Hydroseed and found him very knowledgeable and able to help guide me through the completion of our landscaping project. Advice was given and my ideas were taken into account as the project details came together. Jim then supplied a subcontractor to pour a cement pad that was also needed before the actual landscaping project began. That company did a great job pouring the pad. After the pad was completed Jim and his crew began their work with the installation of the sprinkler system. They moved on to the excavation and bush removal. After that they brought in new soil and hydroseeded the lawn. Now after two weeks out the sprinkler system is working wonderful and the yard is coming in very nicely. I must say that I am very pleased with how Above & Beyond Hydroseed handled all phased of my landscaping project. I would highly recommend that if you are serious about starting your landscaping project that you call Above & Beyond Hydroseed and allow them to give you their ideas and an estimate.

We discussed our ideas with Jim and came up with a plan that worked. At Jim's suggestion, I met him at Mutual Materials to pick out our Iron Mountatin flagstones and some decorative boulders. He started the day indicated and completed the job in about a week. We had used Jim before to build retaining walls and again we are very happy with the results and the price.

We went with Jim Hendry because he was very accomodating and made helpful suggestions while letting us go with our ideas. He understood our desire to improve our landscaping so we could sell the house in 3-5 years. He transplanted some plants and pruned them all to make them look much better. He answered all our concerns and made corrections promptly. He answered emails and phone calls promptly. He believes in being a good boss to his workers and regularly "dug" in and did the work also while supervising. He is obviously proud of his work and crew. Our neighbors were impressed by his crew and their work. We would highly recommend him and will be using him and his crew for regular upkeep of our new landscape.
