The first day two people, a technician and his brother turned up it took them 2 hours to turn on the system. It had taken the company about 5 minutes to do the back flow testing. Had they been doing a real back flow test for the previous three years test if the system couldn't be turned on?
They changed some valves and disappeared inspite of not having completed the job that they had committed themselves too.
The scheduler called and apologised and arranged for 4 people and 2 trucks to come back another day.
This time there was one technician and 3 helpers who proceeded to turn large drip zones into truncated zones by cutting off and caping heads and by ripping out sections of poly pipe. They managed to get some sections of drip going but they are now so high pressured that they produce a high pressure rising mist that is useless. They sent me a bill for 23 hours of labor at $ 75/hr plus parts which I have paid.
The whole job could have been done properly by one technician over a period of 8-10 hours.
The use of minimum wage helpers increases billable hours without increasing productivity. The more helpers they send out the more they can bill and the more expensive their service becomes.
I am now left with a destroyed system and one of the valves that had been changed is spewing water and the company has stopped responding.
"Unfortunately, this job did not go the way the customer thought it should. However, we do not agree with his view of what happened. The customer mentioned the time it took to turn on the system. Here is an excerpt from an email to the customer on August 13th, in which we describe what happened when we went to turn on the system that he thought took us too long. I know that the customer just does not understand all involved, which is why we try hard to explain the details. On August 13th we wrote... "I spoke with (the technician) about the turning on of the valve. He indicated that the valve handle is not on one of the shut off valves on the backflow assembly. He was able to turn the valve stem, which the handle attaches to when in place. He also indicated that your system is a bit confusing as the house is able to work on well water and city water. He also wanted to make sure after he did get the water on to the system that there was not a mainline break. Thus, he had to monitor the meter which is a long ways away. There may be more that he could explain better if he was on site at the device with you there, but I have tried to relay what he said. He shortened his time in/out on his work order already before he turned it into me to account for this situation, thus you were not billed for the extra time he spent." In addition to this, I explained other circumstances and our expressed our desire to resolve issues and keep customers happy. We also did a walk thru with the owner the last day on site and explained everything that we had completed and the fact that there was much more that should be done. The customer paid the invoice, which we had discounted in an effort to show good faith. We have responded to every correspondence, which has been mostly emails. The last correspondence was from Olympic to the customer on September 15th, 2015"
In the past I was satisfied with their service but it seems to have gotten worse. I guess they are understaffed or so I was told.
"We were out several times this year. I believe the customer did not know how to program the controller and was accidentally stacking start times, which then made her system seem like it was not performing correctly. We did not invoice for at least two of our return trips to reprogram the controller after the customer changed the timing. We have confirmed several times that the new timer is performing as designed. Now that it is fall, we have also winterized the sprinkler system for the season and still have this customer in good standing."
"Thank you!"
Darren directed a small crew to do the actual work. He had some terriffic ideas for steps and grade changes. He and his crew worked quickly, efficiently and professionally.
We had initially planned to procure and install the plants ourselves to save money. I am SO glad we bit the bullet and had them do it.
One of the advantages of working with Olympic Landscape was that the designer broke the job into parts so that we could have the option of doing any of it ourselves. He would have been happy to just provide us with detailed plans and let us take it from there or do anything we wanted up to a completely finished job. The only things we left for ourselves is to do the irrigation and to reinstall a brick patio.
I would recommend Olympic to anyone. Everyone we had any contact with was professional, friendly and capable and we are excited by the finished project.
Kip (designer extraordinaire and visionary) came out to our home and was very easy to communicate his ideas for the area...he listened to my concerns and answered each question thoroughly.
Kip and his crew, Brian and Fransico, arrived on time and set to work immediately. Every detail - from protecting the lawn, concrete curbing and fence (removing a section to all for access) was performed meticulously; no one would guess that a Bobcat had trekked across the yard and was parked in the back for 4 days!
Our current resident fish, were carefully netted out and placed in a tank for the duration while their environment was improved. Kip was very gentle with the fish and discovered 3 fingerlings amongst the school!
The installation, landscaping and electrical (subcontracted) work went smoothly. The team put in a hard days work each day! It was a pleasure to observe a crew who worked well together for a common goal - my backyard! :-).
Worksite was kept tidy - and fence section was replaced at the end of the day.
Kip placed the large boulders and used his design and engineering skills to fit and place each properly. This is definitely a mix of art and engineering. He was meticulous with this project - and often asked for my input and confirmation as the pond progressed.
Both Francisco and Brian worked together well and kept the project on time; they worked very hard and long hours. The weather was quite warm, too.
I would definitely recommend Olympic Landscaping for any landscaping project - especially water features.
This project took 5 days to complete - and it is a beautiful oasis in unincorporated King County.
"We worked with this customer on and off for a few years, completing most of the work in 2002 and have had limited contact with her since. We are surprised by her comments. This was a difficult site with limited access and incredibly poor sub-soils and drainage. The plantings were chosen with much input from the customer. We’ve maintained her sprinkler system since the installation and prior to this, she has not made a negative comment about it. We do not maintain the lighting system, and have had no on-going call backs or history of repeat problems. We typically get positive comments and nice compliments back from a very high percentage of our customers. We are of course, disappointed whenever the customer experience is less than excellent."
"The estimates we prepared were based on a landscape plan which the members commissioned us to do, and was drawn to meet their expectations. We offered pricing and several options which they could select from. Cost comparisons are difficult. We do not know what others charge to do similar work…work of the same quality and with no shortcuts. This can place us in a higher cost category on some projects, and is understandable. Most customers find our phone system easy to use. A caller will hear a welcome greeting, and then is instructed that a quick push to “0” will make a connection to a receptionist. In addition, the member had direct e-mail to both the sales representative and design team, which was used daily. We do not present a corporate approach at Olympic. In fact, employees here are very personable, and in tune with our customers desires. We strive to make each project a very enjoyable experience for both us and our clients. We are of course disappointed when in these rare situations we are unable to achieve this kind of customer satisfaction."
"I have to admit that we thought we were on track throughout the design process, working with our customer, using her ideas, etc. all along the way. Then that changed when we started the work. It was a very surprising disconnect. Our team, all very personable and enthusiastic in creating a great landscape, tried to stay in turn with our customer's desires, making changes as appropriate to meet their expectations. Some times we were at a loss even with our best attempts at this. Without going into specifics on each item discussed . . . we are very professional and knowledgeable about constructing a proper and pleasing landscape project. This installation, along with our 50 to 70 other installations per year, was completed using above standard landscape techniques. We work very hard providing what the customer wants and even surprising them with our excellence; the responses from (almost) all our clients prove this out. Sometimes, as in this case, we find ourselves working within a confusing relationship situation. Our intent here was to make the best of a perplexing situation; and, in this case, we actually chalked up much of the challenge to the client's disposition while still owning up to our position as a responsible contractor."
