Near the end of the day, the project supervisor arrived, and they speeded up, but they failed to seal one of the windows on the outside, and did no sealing/caulking at all on the inside. The supervisor had said he would put frames around the windows like the ones on my other new windows, but after the fact said he was unable to do so. He came back the following day and sealed the outside of the one window, and promised to return that week to repair the damaged cedar siding with sealant. He said after he made the repairs and I painted the damage, it would be unnoticeable.
After several weeks, I called and left him a message, asking him to keep his promise to return to finish the job. He never responded.
A few weeks later, I emailed the main office, asking them to remind the supervisor that he had promised to finish the job. I also asked them to send me a final invoice so that I could apply for a utility rebate. They never responded. In the meantime, of course, they hit my credit card for the other half of the bill, so essentially, they took the money and ran.
Unlike one of the other reviewers who hounded JMI for months until they finished promised work, I don't see why a customer should have to go to so much effort to get the work and service that a provider had promised. It's poor customer service on top of mediocre and incomplete workmanship.
If a good price is the most important issue for you, they likely will provide it. Just make sure they complete the work to your satisfaction before you pay them off. Otherwise, you may experience the same poor treatment I did.
The job was an 1100 sq ft rental from the 1930's with wood, single pane windows. All 12 of them needed to be replaced, including one window that was ~10 ft off of the ground and required a hook and hinge to open. We discussed options as to how to keep this window's functionality, as it is responsible for venting the attic. We were told that Cascade offered such a window with hardware that would allow it to be opened from the ground as we currently did, for just a bit more.
We agreed to pay the extra price (which was very reasonable), and the contract was signed. They beat out another company for their on-site professionalism, knowledge and their price. Definite "A" so far!
They ordered the windows promptly, and the windows arrived at their shop roughly 3 weeks later. An installation date of early March was arranged. (One owner heads the installations, the other deals with the calls, checks, ordering, etc.)
At the initial installation, one of the owners and his helper worked very hard and almost completely finished the whole home in one day. They showed up the next day, finished the installation and left. We noticed that they did not clean up all of their construction mess, but that was not a big deal; we cleaned it up. They did "A" work so far!
We walked around the house inspecting their work. We noticed that the plastic frame on one window was completely broken on both the inside upper left- and right-hand sides of the frame, right up agains the glass, allowing us to see inside of the frame itself, so that we could see the screws that were holding it in. We also noticed that the hardware to open and close the high window had not been left.
We called immediately and spoke with the other owner who asked for pictures of the damage. We sent them that day and he confirmed them. He contacted Cascade, claiming that it was their problem for shipping a damaged window (our concern was that they installed a damaged window! There was simply no way that they could have missed the two 4" by 2" broken holes on both sides while installing them! We were surprised that they had not slit their hands open on the jagged edges).
Cascade sent a representative out that next week to inspect the window. He informed us that the damage had to have been done by the installer. Furthermore, it was his opinion that the screws had been improperly countersunk by the installer to the extent that the opening and closing of the windows would destroy the mechanism over time and would invalidate the warranty. He inspected several other windows and found the same issue. He said that Cascade would not honor the warranty if installation was done in this manner, and that we needed to have JMI resink the screws on all of the windows, and order a new window.
From then, March 26th, until August 10th... let me repeat that: August 10th, we were given the run-around bouncing between JMI and Cascade who were playing the Blame Game. Literally weeks would pass after a promised date by JMI to respond, with no answer at all. Cascade was, for their part, on top of it with their responses and keeping their deadlines. With regard to call-backs, JMI was absolutely atrocious - never once returning a post-install call when promised.
To his credit, it must be said that the one JMI owner who does the installation piece did show up multiple times, often on the weekends, claiming to have the parts to fix the windows and/or the hardware for the high window, but invariably would not have checked his inventory before he left and then had to go back only to reschedule to a later date. He would show up at the later date to finish the job, would get a little piece done, realize he had a wrong part / lost part / forgotten part and have to reschedule.
We ended up taking so much time off of work over the months, I threatened to take them to small claims court. They expressed shock that I was being so drastic, but could not seem to understand when I explained how much time had gone by, how they did not return calls, brought the wrong materials and were taking several months to finish a job that should have taken 2 days.
At that point(June-ish), my wife took over dealing with them, as my patience had completely run out. A couple more months of this went by and eventually even she reached the end of her patience (not an easy task) and we started talking about small claims court again.
However, it was at this time that they actually finished the job... So that was January 20th - August 10th.
Sadly, I believe that since they had been paid they were hoping that eventually we would stop caring. They were wrong. We kept on them until they resank all of the screws in all of the windows, recaulked them, got the appropriate hardware for the high window and proved to us that it actually would open and close the window. Furthermore, we had Cascade verify that the warranty is valid.
This is sad. We love supporting local businesses. We enjoy seeing local companies do good work and don't mind paying for their services. However, we work hard for our money and deserve to get what we paid for. I think that we are very patient people and definitely not inclined to rant about small matters. JMI, despite starting off as very professional and hard working, is in our opinion a terrible company to do your windows. Other people seem to have good luck with them - we hope that the installations were done properly for those folks.
They carried two lines of windows, Cascade (a bargain brand) and CDI (a better quality brand) and explained the ins and outs of both. Communication was outstanding, we emailed a spreadsheet back and forth to square away exactly what work was to be done and how much it would all cost so I had an exact, to-the-dollar quote before anything began.
The installers did well. I had these windows put in last November and I've had zero problems. They didn't do anything fancy or high end but everything is weathertight, everything works, no "mistakes," no trouble with any of the windows through their first winter.
I've noticed a huge difference not just in keeping the house toasty warm all winter but in the noise level as well. Double pane windows rock!
JMI did a very good basic job for a really, really good price. I say, give 'em a try! I'm glad I did, and I'll definitely hire them again next time.
