We sought bids for a simple, same-footprint remodel of our family bathroom. Shepel had a competitive bid and good reviews, so we went with them. The design process was the only problem. Shepel presented a design and had us choose materials. Then the budget came out to TWICE what the bid had been. And they didn't remember what the bid had been. We had to show them the written bid they had emailed us for them to believe how far off track the design had gone. So they had never referred to the original specs of the bid when making the design. On top of that, you have to pay thousands for that design, which is on top of whatever budget they come up with for the work. When we protested, they worked with us to bring down the cost, and we chose to keep and pay for some of the more high-end features. But the assumption seems to be that, once the bid process is over, the sky's the limit. All that is not a problem if you are aware it can happen and reiterate to them that you have a set price limit when you are in the design process. We just didn't know to do that and were caught unaware. Despite this communication problem, I would still recommend Shepel, and here's why: They have a really good team of detail-oriented, careful craftsmen who know each other and their business and take care of their own mistakes. The tilework, plumbing, lighting, countertops, etc. were done beautifully. Fully gutting and replacing a two-sink, bathtub/shower bathroom took 8 weeks. The workers came and went on their own schedule with minimal upheaval to our lives. (In our case, someone was always home, so they could come any time, and they did sometimes work evenings or weekends.) They kept things neat and cleaned up after themselves. And they met the agreed-upon schedule with no surprises. All that is much harder to find in a remodeling business. So I advise that you keep an eye on the design and budget and then let Shepel's amazing crew handle the craft they are so good at!

Fantastic experience. We will use them for every future project that they can do. They remodeled our bathroom after some water damage - on time, within 2% of the quote, and super high quality and value. The communication was consistently good throughout (my experience with other contractors is that the communication tends to nosedive after you pay the first deposit) and the project required very little active management from us. The workers were all as polite, professional, and non-intrusive as possible.
