The biggest problem was the absolute lack of communication.
It would take days and sometimes as much as a week for them to return phone calls, emails or texts.
After many complaints about this they finally assigned a new person to communicate with me.
While she did communicate better than the first person, it would still take a long time to get an answer.
The schedule was the biggest conflict. It appeared like they were building this as a hobby instead of getting someone out there on a daily basis. At times I thought that the job had been abandoned.
The contract was approved in April of 2014, I was told that it would take 2 weeks to get a permit, due to their lack of communication it took months. There were some simple problems with getting survey dimensions, and as the contractor would not return the calls of the surveyor, just like not returning my calls, it dragged on into the summer.
When they did start, they would work a few days, then disappear for a week or so, never letting me know when they would be back.
problems occurred during the job, the holdowns were not installed per plan and the building department would not buy them off until it was re-engineered. The stairway was not built to code and they finally had the inspector declare it as "not habitable area" to buy it off.
This was not a big concern of mine as the stairway was workable for me.
They had told me that the garage would come with an automatic door opener, but as it was not written in the contract, they wanted to charge for it. I declined as with their track record it might have taken another few months to get it installed.
After a lot of hounding they finally finished the job in December.
"[member name removed], I am sorry that you feel this way about our company. I would like to address a few things for you. 1. We do NOT sub out our workers. They work for us only and have for many years. 2. Yes the owners, Chris & Kayla came out for the sale and to collect funds. We were also there many days on site while you left your sister in law there. When Chris was not onsite the job foreman who has been with Ark for 9 years was there. As for the concrete cracking you were offered options to upgrade the floor due to the ground being soft in your location and your choice was not to do that based on funds. We informed you both verbally and in our contract that concrete cracks. There is not a good patching option for what you have going on there. If you are having an issue with the garage door staying up we would be more than happy to send someone out to address that please let us know. As for a lien notice that was only sent to you after months of non-payment when the building was signed off and you had started occupying it. There was no added interest to your bill even though you sing a contract stating that you would follow our payment plan. I am again sorry that you feel this way about the wonderful shop you got and our company that handled it for you. We work very hard as a family owned and operated business in our community and strive to offer the best we can. If you feel that our company can help resolve some of these issues please feel free to contact us."
We signed the contract 6/22/13 and work was not completed until 12/4/13. That’s your first clue. As noted, we contracted with Ark Custom Building to replace an existing RV cover. The original RV cover was attached to the garage on one side and we asked for the same configuration, only taller and longer to accommodate a larger motorhome.
Everything seemed fine when they came to discuss the project, look over the site, and sign the contract. After they got the first check it was four weeks with no contact. We were told the permitting process took a lot of time, but the complete lack of communication was unsettling. It took several phone calls to get any response at all, and we were told they were having “problems” with the permitting. Several more weeks passed – again with no communication. Again it took several calls and messages before we could get any response. Unless they wanted a check, communication was extremely difficult. I don’t require a lot of hand holding, but they were not responsive at all.
We finally got a tentative start date of 9/30/13 with a promise to call the week before to confirm. No call. I finally got through to them on Facebook at 10:15PM on 9/29! I asked in writing to see the plans – since we had had no communication except for a few phone conversations since we signed the contract in June. They confirmed a start date of 9/31, but provided no plans or drawings. Demolition of the old RV cover was quick and materials were delivered. We were told they should be done early the following week. Obviously that did not happen.
We didn’t realize they had changed what we *thought* was the agreed upon design until we saw huge holes cut in the existing cement pad next to the garage for the poles. We immediately tried to contact them and after several attempts got a return phone call. The conversation was frustrating to say the least. They claimed they couldn’t attach to the garage wall because the codes had changed and it would have to be reengineered. When I asked why we weren’t consulted about the change in plans they really had no answer. Even going so far as to say, Well you didn’t say we couldn’t build it this way. Really????
Workmanship was spotty, it failed inspection multiple times because they didn’t follow the inspector’s directions. They did not clean up the site until we complained and we still did most of the work. Bottom line, we have a new RV cover. I’m glad we’re done with this company and would NOT recommend them. It was a frustrating and much more difficult process than it needed to be.
