SMS did work for me for several years and did a good job.
They would show up in their marked trucks and uniformed employees.
One day that stopped, and they started sending private contractors and that's where the problems began.
The cars/trucks were not marked with anything recognizable and it was a little shocking to have strangers just enter the back yard. I called SMS who confirmed that they had started outsourcing, which was OK for a while.
The contractors would continue to change without notices; and often would not show up for several weeks and eventually months.  (without changes to billing -- I was credited for some of the time after complaining).
I requested to have SMS do the work directly as they did a good job in the past and was informed that it was no longer an option and they no longer had staff to do the work directly.  After trying to work with them for several months, and little or not action, I had to cancel.
The yard was in such bad shape at that point, that it cost 2K just to get it back to a point where it could be maintained.
SMS direct does good work; but the out-source/contract didn't work at all.
The staff in the SMS office were as helpful as they could be and professional. I would only use them again if they were SMS direct and not contracted.

Provider was prompt for initial consultation.  He listened and seemed very knowledgeable, although he took no notes.  I figured that was just his style, but upon review of initial design he missed a lot of basic requirements.  He did adjust and we came upon a design that we liked.   The job included: removal of pre-existing garden (weed patch), design and installation.
We went ahead with the work and were not impressed with the planting practices.  Ground cover plants were taken out and planted directly into rocks w/o any separation of roots.  No top soil layer for the plants to reach. We did a lot of back and forth via email (calls went to voice mail).  Finally, when we were frustrated with the lack of follow up (we asked for a detailed invoice and replacement for several plants that died).  Enough time has passed that I will not list the sordid details but bottom line:
1. The company uses a combination of very low skilled (or just no training) labor and just enough skilled to make a complete the job
2.  Could/would not provide basic business document (detailed Invoice/receipt)
3. Instead of providing customer service, owner became defensive when discussing issues.

okay at first but by the time they were done i was not happy the patio wasn,t the way they said and i had to go around and tell the workers to pick up leaves and debris after the clean up when i called the office they said they would send someone out and he never showed up then i got the bill in the mail and just decided to get the whole thing over with and send the money in i should have went with a differant company i think there trying to do too many things and dont have time for a small person like me
