We had Dylan out 3 times to correct a problem with the new unit and it was not until Chris personally came out that it was resolved. Also, there was some issue between his team and the General Contractor on the project. It seemed like it was related to his workload. I have given a rating of B. Prior to the renovation it would have been an "A". I still would recommend them, but you will need to pay attention to the work and ideally, you would not have to spend any time focusing on that.
Initial contact with owner of company both on the phone and at home went well. He provided an estimate (which ended up being the final price) and a start date several weeks out (which ended up being the actual start date).
I really liked the professionalism and knowledge these guys have. I've had all kinds of remodel projects done in my homes over the years and I have to say these guy are top notch in all respects. They treated my home better than anyone, super careful, quiet, and based on the buzz while working, things went without a hitch. They finished close to on schedule (5 days, soft estimate as 3or4 days) but went out of their way to button things up on my schedule. Also, I'm very impressed with the system overall. There's an air handler in the attic, a compressor unit outside, and a hidden duct system including 1-3 ducts per room. The upstairs portion of the house is covered but it has enough capacity to cool the entire house (the downstairs tends to stay much cooler anyway).
These can be tricky to install, and if done wrong, you get air blowing on you or a loud system. This is not the case, the system operates perfectly and is quiet. Worked great on the couple of hot days last week, but if we find it needs tweaking, the team offered to add a duct or whatever would be needed if we find any issues.
I don't have enough information to grade the price because there just aren't enough installers around that can handle installing this type of system. However, based on the fact that in general this is the most expensive type of system and that other comparable systems cost close to as much, I'm saying the price is good and fair, maybe great.
Chris, the owner, was on-time for the estimate, was courteous and efficient, and didn't try to up-sell me on anything. His estimate was the best price of the three I received.
The two installers were likewise on time, friendly and efficient. They were done with the whole task in three hours, leaving things at least as clean as when they arrived.
My respect for them began with the first phone call. I have a manufactured home with an electric furnace. The furnace was quite old,
although it had been working OK. But I thought about having a new furnace installed because I considered the possibility that the old one might fail during the winter. So I called C&C Olympic and requested an appointment for an estimate on a new furnace.
Jamie immediately told me that replacing a functioning electric furnace was not recommended because, in their opinion, the new ones are not as reliable as the old ones. She told me that if I actually had a failure they could probably fix it. WOW! How about that? They could have easily sold me a new furnace!
I thanked them for the information and hung up. My existing heat pump had failed a couple of years ago, so I was just using the furnace for heating. I had budgeted for a new furnace when I called them but found that expense was apparently not necessary. So I called them back and told them that I?d keep the old furnace but would like to schedule an appointment for an estimate on a new heat pump.
Chris came out and asked me what happened to the heat pump. I told him that I thought that the compressor had failed, as the fan still worked but the unit put out neither heated nor cooled air. Therefore I?d like to see about installing a new one. Chris told me that he?d like to take a look at the heat pump. So he examined the existing heat pump, determined that the failure was due to low refrigerant, a puffy capacitor, and a faulty circuit breaker. He fixed each of these problems, then turned on the heat pump ? which it worked perfectly on both heating and cooling cycles! And how about that? They could easily have sold me a new heat pump!
While he was here Chris also examined my furnace, noting the make and model, and told me that he had replacement parts for that particular furnace if anything failed, and reiterated his opinion that I should not replace the furnace.
A few days later I received the invoice for the work performed. Refrigerant prices are quite high now and I needed over four pounds, so that was the priciest item on the invoice. However, I checked around online and found that the price per pound that Chris charged me was lower than the quoted retail price of many other contractors.
This company is all about honesty and good business ethics. And that?s smart, because now
they have a lifelong customer.
Incidentally, I had scheduled estimates with two other firms. C&C Olympic happened to be the first one scheduled. I actually
thought about going ahead with estimates from the two other HVAC contractors just to see what they would try to sell me.
But I thought better of it and just politely cancelled the appointments <grin>.
His team of an experienced technician and a relatively new trainee came out within just a couple of days, comfortably in the time frame promised, and set to work on the unit. They installed the new compressor, but one of the freon filters they were to install wasn't quite like the one they were supposed to take out. To their credit; they didn't try to make the incorrect filter fit, but instead called Chris, who then came by as soon as he could get free from the job he was working on. He determined that Trane had sent the wrong filter, and got the right one on order right away. While he was waiting for Chris to show up, the technician inspected the air handler to make sure that there wasn't an accumulation of dust and dirt on it, blocking the air flow. Since I had just checked and cleaned it before they came, I knew it was pretty clean--and he simply confirmed that and didn't try to sell me any service I didn't need.
When the new filter came in, Chris came back and installed it, and got the system up and running with a new charge of freon. As an engineer, I'm curious about how things work, and he was happy to talk with me about what he was doing and why: I learned quite a bit from him. He also asked me about some electrical things, which is my area of expertise, and he was clearly genuinely interested in learning. It was clear to me that he's someone who really thinks about what he's doing, and doesn't just do it "because that's the way things are done." I trust people like that to spot things that others would miss.
Even though the replacement parts were covered by warranty, the job was pretty expensive. I thought about downgrading the "price" rating a notch, but I know that modern freon is very expensive, and that was a big part of the net cost. The labor was billed at a reasonable rate, and I feel confident that Chris and his team did a good job. I'm writing this a couple months after the work was done, at the end of a cold snap when daytime temperatures stayed below freezing for nearly a week, and the heat pump has worked very well during this time; it switched in the auxiliary heat only a few times when the temperature was in the low 20's. That's better than when the system was new.
