"Thanks much. It was a pleasure to work for you and your family."
We sure were. Looking back now that it is done, I wish we
had called Friendship Builders many years sooner and saved ourselves the grief!
Our over one hundred year old home has only one bathroom,
and it had not been remodeled in decades.
We knew we needed an entire restoration, but were very afraid of what else
we would find needed repair once the demolition began. One Contractor who bid the job would not give
hard numbers, would not list specific products he would use, and when asked
what happens when we find the unexpected, said it was all going to be on
us. In contrast, Friendship builders?
bid was clear, easy to follow, it listed the scope of the project, all work to
be done, all products that were to be used, what the home owner would supply,
and a hard bottom line total that we could budget for and rely on.
The Owner Nate is the perfect combination of a great skilled
craftsman himself, who also has the respect of lots of tradesmen in town who do
things he prefers not to. Thanks to
Nate, we also found our Electrician, who has since upgraded nearly our entire
home?s electrical system, and because Nate does not ask for a percentage of
that future work like many contractors would, you can get his tradesmen to do
additional work for you at the prices they would give other tradesmen, so we
got lots more electrical done than we hoped we could for the same expense. We would recommend all his subcontractors.
Before the work began, I realized what I was really trying
to find was a competent Carpenter who would be honest if anything went wrong or
he found something bad, and who would stand behind his work and that of his
subcontractors. The truth is, I knew I
had to trust the person to be honorable, to tear it all out gently, to build it
back correct, and not cut corners.
Remembering the old adage that ?Fast, Cheap or Good, you only get 2 of
the 3? I wanted to find someone who takes pride in their work, so I did not
dicker about price, or squabble about when he could fit us in.
We were happy to learn his price was reasonable, and he
dedicated his efforts to our house once he started the job, we felt he gave us
his undivided attention and was invested in getting it right for us. Our bathroom needed everything redone, from
the studs up, and there were over a hundred small decisions we had to make to
get everything to match and look stunning, which Nate was more than helpful and
patient throughout, and it does look stunning beautiful.
After all those choices, we did have a few hiccups, but Nate
handled everything for us, returning the tub with a blemish happily, we had a
manufacturing defect in our window that caused him to have to undue and redo a
portion of his work, all of which he did to his uncompromising standards and
with a smile. Turns out, the business
name is more than just a name, it?s a Mission Statement. Thanks Nate, if I had more bathrooms, I?d ask
you to rebuild Every One. Tell your
friends folks, there is still an honorable guy out there who won?t rip you off
or leave you hanging. To a grey hair
like me, that means something.
Each project took approximately one month, give or take a few days. At times we each needed some scheduling flexibility, and that was fine. We are very pleased with the main bathroom, so we hired Nate again for the master bath. The 2nd project needed subcontractors, and they were just as great as Nate in both quality and friendliness.
The main bathroom was a tub and shower combo. We had a marble top vanity from Costco we really liked, and Nate worked with that very well. For the master we went with the same style vanity, but with a double sink. Nate was flexible and helpful. If I could do everything over again, one thing I would do is be better prepared for design before working with Nate. We had no idea how to go into these projects, and while Nate was helpful with design aspects when we asked, I learned it's better to be design prepared going into the project. Another thing to be prepared for is that the cost listed above means that those costs involve some things that Nate purchased, for example, he basically chose the tub and the door for the shower. Nate is very clear about what is your purchase responsibility is, and what is his. None of these things represent an issue with Nate, only that you have awareness of how you might need to work with Nate.
We are very pleased in our experience with Friendship Builders (which is why we hired him twice), and would hire him again. We're pondering a kitchen remodel, and Nate would be on a short list to consider for that project.
