The design process was collaborative. They've remodeled a lot of kitchens, the suggestions of Phoenix and its subs were welcome and helpful. I did a lot of and quot;mentaland quot; cooking and had my own ideas of what had to happen in the kitchen and how much counter and peninsula space we'd need (I recommend this approach). The end design really works.
The original estimate was a surprise but when we looked at the breakdown George (Piano, owner) provided, every task was described and the price per task reasonable. Ultimately, we decided to spend even more and take care of upgrades to the electrical, brought our heating system up to code, wall ceiling and floor insulation was strengthened, floors refinished, etc. I work from home so the remodel would have to include me being on the premises many weekdays. I worried about that but it turned out not to be a problem. I didn't mention that we did the remodel in winter; some days were at or below freezing.
At the outset I want to say that Phoenix and subs cleaned up every night. They installed large plastic sheets with zippers (to get in and out of the construction zone) to keep dust and debris contained. We had a job captain who visited or worked pretty much daily on site. The contractors and all subs showed up on time every day they were scheduled. I would use any of them again and have recommended the subs to friends looking for electricians and plumbers. During the remodel every question and issue was dealt with that day or the next. Permitting and inspections went well, no delays. If systems needed to be shut off, they gave me notice and made sure the basics— gas, water and heat were running at the end of the construction day. One night a member of the crew returned two hours after the end of the day to be sure the house had heated up. We never felt like we were living in a construction zone, the rest of the house worked as usual. Our and quot;field kitchenand quot; was located in the dining room: microwave, electric frying pan, dishes, etc. We didn't have dust so we could cook every night.
Every task was completed at or below the estimate. Billing was comprehensive and happened as agreed, in stages as the job progressed. Billing questions were answered promptly, most were answered before we asked.
The end result was spectacular. The finishes are top quality. We never prepare guests who knew our old kitchen for the change. It's a lot more fun to see the reaction when they come around the corner and behold the end result.
There were several and quot;quirksand quot; to the job - a drawer next to the oven location that limited the type of oven that would fit (most have handles and control knobs that would interfere with the drawer), and 40-year old wood stain throughout the interior of the house that needed to be carefully matched in trimming out the windows. Phoenix helped us figure out both of these. Matching the stain required several exchanges of samples with the paint sub-contractor in order to get it right.
This was a job we put off for many years, being somewhat overwhelmed by all the crafts that would be involved. However, this is one of Phoenix's strong points - the network of superb sub-contractors they work with. We were very impressed with the quality of the work the Phoenix people did, as well as the work of all the subcontractors, and we are very pleased with the results.
