We met three times.
My initial complaint was of a faulty thermostat in a new condo that I wanted him to replace. A minimum $150 service call, but worth it. It turned out that installign the thermostat I'd purchased (though the exact same model as the one it was replacing) did not fix the problem so we assumed it was probably the in-wall heater itself.
He purchased a replacement unit and installed it on the next visit. Since the new heater was smaller than the old one, I was going to have to patch the wall to make it look good. Fortunately, Matt did a little on-site rejiggering and made the new heater fit in the housing of the old heater, saving me a couple hours work. Awesome.
Unfortunately, it turned out the problem wasn't the heater, either. We concluded that the model of thermostat which had been installed in the condo didn't work in general (as in, that model was junk). So, our third meeting was simply the installation of an entirely different thermostat, which worked great.
So, it took two extra appointments to get the problem resolved, but I can't blame that on Matt. It was a tough problem to diagnose, since the thermostat I wanted installed was brand new, but still didn't work. The troubleshooting steps he went through were perfectly rational, and I don't think it could have been done more cheaply.
I marked a little off for punctuality, because he had to reschedule one appointment on fairly short notice. Not really a big deal, but not perfect. For every other appointment, though, he arrived precisely on time (better than many contractors I've worked with).
Our front porch was ugly and unfinished when we moved in six years ago, and is now elegant, sturdy, and safe to use. Matt suggested colors and finishing touches, and was right on with the results. When he attached the non-skid strips to the steps, he didn't just cut and stick them on. He fitted them perfectly, lined them up beautifully, and added attractive screws to hold them in place for the long term (the old ones kept peeling off). The pressure washing is incredible. Very thorough job, no damage to surfaces, and while he was at it, he even washed an old car that was sitting in our side driveway - for FREE! He said it was so dirty it was bugging him, because it didn't go well with our newly cleaned driveway!
Matt's work on our bathroom exhaust fan was -- exhausting. After installing faulty parts twice, he complained to the manufacturer on our behalf, and got them to issue a gift card in our name for his trouble. All of the work he did inside and outside our home was done with perfection, and we are extremely pleased. The only disappointment was that the bathroom light fixture he repaired went on the blink again 24 hours after he fixed it -- but Matt warned us that the fixture was old, needed to be replaced, and would probably go out again. We will have him come back later to replace it.
Matt worked quietly around our family and home businesses, was conscientious about safety, and was so good with our 2-year-old that she would squeal and run to the door when he would arrive each day. He is a very trustworthy man with a strong work ethic, high integrity, a pleasant and friendly demeanor, a good sense of humor, and skills in a huge variety of areas. His prices are very competitive, and we find him to be honest, fast, concerned about our interests, and driven to satisfy. We will definitely continue to use Matt as our handyman.
