We have used Tom Ryan Floors on a number of projects. We are getting ready to start on another project soon
Tom and his crew are a professional group. Tom makes sure we understand the many details involved in tearing up a room and replacing it with new flooring. We feel comfortable with Tom Ryan Floors for a number of reasons. We feel like we are being treated fairly and that we are dealing with an honest business owner. We don't feel nervous about having Tom or his crew in our home. We feel that Tom has our best interest in mind and won't sell us something that is convenient for him. He an intuitive salesman with good understanding of his clients and what they are asking for.
We can leave the crew to do their work without worrying that they will miss something.
We got bids from others to have our floors refinished and we felt like Tom's price was fair. His price was 15% higher, but we feel like we will receive 25% more service and product that another contractor we spoke with.
We have enjoyed working with this company and recommend Tom Ryan Floors to anyone needing their services.
It went great! Tom helped me find the right tile for the look I was going for. Originally I wanted honed marble, but instead went with porcelain that looked similar to marble, but was far easier to care for. I think, after seeing the finished work, it was the right choice to make visually as well. The marble would have been a bit over the top, considering the size of the area.
I feel very grateful that Tom really listened to what I was going for and made a suggestion that turned out better than I had imagined. Tom did our wood floors a couple of years earlier, with great results. We're moving to a new house and I'll be asking him over to help with the remodel there as well. He's had lots of experience, but really stays current with the new trends out there. All in all, great experience! Also, he's a really nice person to work with. To me, that's very important!
We really liked their sub-contractor installation team headed up by Edvard--they did outstanding work.
A few minor problems surfaced later and they quickly responded to address them.
Lessons learned: flooring people only do flooring. If asbestos is an issue, you need to find/schedule those contractors yourself. Same with painting and any other needed touch-up. Make sure everyone agrees on whether there needs to be new molding or not and who will do that work. Have it clearly defined up front who is responsible for what and what the schedule is--we did that, which added up to about 7 different contractors for our particular job and it went smoothly.
Make sure that all of the costs are included in the original bid including replacing vent covers in wood and that you clearly understand all of the things that could be found as the project progresses and estimated cost if they are found.
I would definitely recommend him to any one.
Tom was great to work with. I explained to him what I was looking for over the phone when I called to make an appointment. This helped him determine which samples to bring with him. I called in the morning and he came out that afternoon.
The next day I went to his showroom to look at more samples and he was able to quickly find some beautiful floral patterns for me. I was able to take these samples home and when I returned with them later that day I placed my order.Nick & Justin did the installation the following week and did a great job. We love our new carpets.
The crew had to come twice to replace boards that were burnt and then four days for sanding and finishing. The work was excellent and we had no problems with dust. We actually left town for the sanding and finishing and gave the crew a key. Everything was in excellent shape when we got back. The final bill was within $25 of the estimate.
Tom went over the pros and cons of different types of flooring. We went with a floating wood floor that was separate planks. It was a pricy option, but I think it was the best choice for the home. Tom gave us a quote. We also received quotes from a couple of other places. Those quotes were a bit lower, but I really liked the attention to detail that Tom was giving our project. So I spoke with him and showed him the other quotes. It turned out that the other quotes didn't include things like stair skirting and resetting the moldings, as well as stair styles (I called and asked). I was so relieved...not so much that the price would be a little higher than I thought, but because Tom knew to quote these things. It felt good to work with someone that knew the business so well.
The project was a lot faster than I thought it would be. We stayed in our home the entire time and the guys move furniture to different areas of the room. Also, because we went with pre-finished, it wasn't a dusty project at all. I think the only real dust we had was when they ripped out the 4 layers of linoleum in the kitchen. That was a mess that none of us counted on. Tom was on site nearly every day checking on things. He doesn't do the actual installs himself, but he has a great team of guys that work with him to get the project done right. And they are good!
All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this company. They were smart and did a fantstic job. We love our floors. And Tom's a really nice person to work with.
Tom's installer for our project was Nick K. Nick started on the project the Friday before New Years and finished the following Wednesday, only taking New Year's day off. Nick did great work, he is very concerned about quality, and he takes his time to do the job right (you need to be prepared for this extra time - we are easy going and flexible so it didn't bother us). Nick was not an early morning guy, he usually didn't get started until after 10am, and he would work till 6ish. A good linoleum floor requires a lot of preparation; 3 coats of floor leveling material - so it takes time - ours was a 5 day job (~33 hours). Nick also installed quarter round trim throughout - and there were a lot of corners and odd angles. I'm sure there are others out there that could have done the job in 3 long days, but I don't think you will get the quality - our final floor and trim turned out great - but I still have to paint the quarter round trim!
I am a home project guy, so Tom also gave me the option to rip out the entry way platform myself to save on labor. I ended up cutting into the entry area and discovered 3/4 inch plywood had be nailed on top of the original hardwood oak floor - fortunately not glued. We are going to restore the entry so the entry area fell off of the Marmoleum project - unfortunately, we had already ordered the product and it is non-returnable; so I have about 50 square feet of rust colored tile left over.
Tom's final invoice removed the installation fee for the entry area and the labor for removing the front entry platform (since I did that work myself) -- Prep work ended up taking 4 hours more than estimated. In the end my final bill cam in about $300 less than estimated - you got to love sweat equity!
Based on our experience, we have already agreed to refinish our hardwood floors with Tom Ryan Flooring - Nick has assured me that Tom's refinishing guys do awesome work too. We start that project on Feb 8th -- after I get some painting done!
