The process was really quite smooth and enjoyable. After contacting PSE to obtain contact information for registered insulation providers for their Home Energy Improvement program, I was contacted by them within 1 day to arrange an appointment for a free estimate and insulation evaluation; this was scheduled for the following week.
For the evaluation and estimate, the owner (Jimmie) arrived and talked with me briefly about what kinds of energy gains I was hoping to see, what my expectations were, and how he might best help address my energy efficiency goals. Jimmie was genuinely and clearly interested, making it a pleasure to work with him. After talking through a little history of the house, Jimmie went into the attic and looked around for a short while, quickly determining that there was very little insulation in the attic (this part I knew) and that adding insulation would be well worth it - after a winter of high heating bills, I'm confident of this as well. Jimmie was also kind enough to suggest other improvements: filling gaps around soffit vents, adding soffit vents to my garage, and that I have cardboard baffles installed in my attic to channel airflow. Whether I chose to do those myself of have his crew attend to them was a no-pressure decision he left to me, and I ultimately decided to have them install the insulation and baffles, attending to the others myself.
A day later, Jimmie e-mailed me the insulation estimate and I soon booked my installation date a few weeks in the future. When the installation crew came, it was a rainy day, but they were energetic, friendly, and well-prepared. They carefully spread tarps across my floors, and cardboard on wall corners (to prevent hoses from grinding away drywall) and began the installation of the cellulose. As they began, they had a few questions about the minimal existing insulation to verify that I wanted the cellulose added to it (which both Jimmie and I had already discussed and agreed was the best option, since there was no reason to remove the existing insulation), and to make me aware that one section of my attic was separated from the main area, and that this area would not be filled because it was inaccessible (I already suspected this would be the case). After that, they set to work and had things done within a few hours: first the baffle installation, then the insulation..
During the installation the crew was very friendly, knowledgeable, and quite nice to have there. Once everything was installed, they showed me the final result and R-level rulers, clearly showing that I had my new R-49 level of insulation (with a bit more in a few spots) and baffles installed. Their cleanup process from that point was quite efficient and they were merrily on their way.
The only negative I feel I should mention was that while the crew did a great job protecting my walls and corners from any damage by their blower hoses (thank you!), they did miss protecting the corners of the attic entry drywall, which became rounded In a few places. It's a minor point that was very easy to fix with a little drywall filler, but I wanted to mention it so that others can easily mention it when they use Specialty Insulation and avoid that minor bit of post-install repair.
The end result was just as I'd expected, and I was very pleased with their quality, professionalism, and pricing. They were even so kind as to apply the PSE rebate to my invoice, reducing my out-of-pocket expense and saving me the trouble of filing paperwork with PSE. I highly recommend them to others seeking to have a great company improve the energy efficiency of their house.
Specialty Insulation is one of the PSE pre-authorized vendors so I was able to get a $400 rebate from PSE that was directly priced into our contract. Jimmie and Brittney worked with us to get our PSE info and get us the rebate.
We were remodeling our kitchen and wanted our old insulation removed so it wouldn't all fall out when we removed our soffits in the kitchen. Jimmie was easy to work with, and accommodated our schedule even on relatively short notice.
The two guys who did the install work were very professional. They put plastic down from the front door all the way to our attic access point, and put a piece of cardboard against our front door so that their blower hose wouldn't scratch the door at all. They did a great job cleaning up before they left, and were in and out in under two hours.
