Crew arrived on time and did the job in half a day. The roof looks great and has held up very well since the job. They also did a great job of tidying up everything when they were done. Would definitely use again.
They really did a great job, and our house looks so much better! They were able to fit us in early as I was almost 9 months pregnant and really didn't want to have roofers here while home with a newborn.
We did find a few roofing tacks around the house after the first day, but when we mentioned it, they came out and picked them up promptly. The whole job on our 1600 sq foot home was done in 2 days.
They did an excellent job, on time, and on the bid price. They made adjustments to roof vents as requested. I would definitely use them again.
(We made the mistake of also contacting the "famous name" roofing company. Their bid was twice the price, and the company rep was obnoxious.)
D Hughes roofing was one of several bids we received for our roof project. Hughes was not the cheapest or most expensive but seemed very experienced, knowledgeable, and willing to work with us in getting our job done. We were able to pick an approximate start date well in advance and Hughes accommodated that. His crew was a friendly hard working bunch that paid attention to detail.
They had to cut back and pry up siding to install new flashing as well as spend a lot time getting new flashing around our 7 skylights and several plumbing vents. They also opened up the roof in one area so I could replace a bathroom vent fan. They did a great job, worked hard and quickly but would stop in an instant to answer any question or concern I had. Everything from tear off to clean-up was very well done.
Replacing a roof is a big expensive important job and it was great to have the job done by such a capable company. Thanks to Dick, Jose, Felix, Leo, Jimmy and all of the others for a job well done.
I'm glad we chose D Hughes roofing. No hassles and a great roof.
My home had a 22 year old cedar shake roof, repaired twice before but still showing a lot of wear. It was probably leaking a little. Decided this was the summer for complete re-roof. Contacted (5) Roofing contractors, met with them at the house, asked a lot of question and got detailed bids from each All are top rated Angie's List for my local area. We had a personal reference for the companies.
The job specs in each bid package were remarkably the same, except for one which included a very different (and expensive) roof ventilation design.
Otherwise, the specs all described the same tear-off, disposal, daily site cleaning, new ½ CDW plywood over the skip sheeting, flashing metals, vents, new skylights, CertainTeed Presidential shingles and the required roofing paper and installation practices needed to meet the 40 year manufacturer’s warranty.
There were differences in the ‘installation’ warrantees. Some lifetime, others a fixed # of years. There was a wide range of total project pricing. It was easy to throw out the 3 most expensive bids. This may be the biggest project that affects your home, short of a remodel. So what made the difference on our final choice?
I choose DHughes Roofing because: 1)Dick clearly had the best priced bid, 2) after meeting I just knew I could work well with him. 3)we had a reference from a co-worker.
Materials delivery and the job started on schedule. Tear off and re-sheeting got underway, but interrupted by a day of heavy June rain. My attic inspection showed that the crew protected the house from leaks, as was promised. The shingle installation took several days, due to complex roof lines and return of the June heat. The crew, led by Jose and Felix, protected the hot shingles from scarring during their work.
Rot was found in a false chimney structure, so Dick arranged for his Carpenter to repair. Work started on time the scheduled morning. Extensive water damage from years of leaking was found. The carpenter, Jeff, proposed a re-build with a much improved design, instead of a 'repair'. Dick, Randy, Jeff and I talked it thru and agreed this was best. Each day of the re-build process started on time, and the finished job (both complete roof and chimney box) look fantastic. It took a while before the new skylights were installed, mainly due to heat on the finished roof.
I felt I was able to stay very engaged in the project throughout. Even with the added labor and materials cost for chimney rebuild, the total price was still very fair. As a nervous homeowner, I definitely had questions (and a few issues) throughout the entire job, and they were answered to my satisfaction either in person by Dick, Randy (his Dad), the roofing crew leads, or on the phone. Emails are not the best way to communicate here. We didn't really have a final walk-around buy-off of the project, but since we'd worked thru all those items during the job I didn't push for it. Still it was a bit of an odd way to finish.
We are very happy with the results. It took years of age off the house’s appearance, and gave it a much more striking appearance. This was definitely well worth the money.
These folks even offered to put some up so we could make our color selection more confidently.
D Hughes also helped us obtain financing for our project - and while there was a mix up at first - with the interest rate coming back too high - it was quickly corrected as soon as I pointed it out. At that point Kelli (Dick's wife and partner) took over the book keeping and provided me with several options with various interest rates and payment plans and we were able to quickly come to an agreement on which plan best suited our needs.
Then, as luck would have it - a house we had been interested in previously came back on the market again - so we jumped at the chance and put a contingent offer on it. This made getting our roof completed suddenly urgent, as it needed to be repaired before we could put our house on the market. I called up Kelli and explained this to her, and even though I had been lollygagging for a couple of months getting our paper work done, when she heard my plight she immediately re-arranged some things and had us on the schedule by the end of that same week. And even though it was the middle of the winter/rainy season, by keeping track of the weather and working in between rain showers they were able to have my roof replaced and ready for market with in one week.
In addition to Kelli's excellent customer service - the crew that worked on the house were prompt, polite, and efficient. They were mindful to protect the plants and trees around the house and cleaned up great! And most importantly the roof turned out beautiful. We received several compliments on it, multiple offers on our house, and were able to sell the first weekend. And I truly don't think we would have been able to with out D Hughes roofing.
When you are looking for a roofer warranty is one of the most significant factor as to knowing you roof is going to last. D Hughes Roofing not only does not honor their warranties but due to their incompetence have voided the manufactures warranty as well. I would not recommend them to anyone and would suggest that no matter what the offer you go elsewhere where warranties are honored.
"The member is not our customer. We performed work for the previous owner who was completely satisfied with our work which was performed to manufacturer standards. The member was very rude and unreasonable when he contacted us, as a courtesy we met with him to see and talk about his concerns. The areas of concern the member had did not have to do with the roof installation but we offered our suggestions. The member did not like our answers and insisted the roof was installed incorrectly. I provided the member a price to complete the work he wanted done (I suspect he wanted us to do it for free for him). The last time we spoke, (which we had spoke many times previously) I said we clearly did not communicate or work well together and said he should go with one of the other contractors he had met with. Again The member is not our customer and our other reviews certainly are a true representation of our company. Again we strive for high ratings but can't meet unreasonable expectations and or demands. Regards- Dick Hughes"
I called and Kelli came out and gave me a quote: I then had to arrange financing, and then got back to them. They were very price competitive and Dick came out for a final look about to comfirm the price. Felix (the crew supervisor) and his crew came out and did a great job with really no distractions to me or my family (or the dogs). Daily cleanup and no dumpster are real pluses!
I didn't want wood shake again (having it cleaned every several years and the gunk that comes off the shake stains and gunks up the gutters). This new roof was about 1/3 more than shake - but it is maintenance free, doesn't have to be 'cleaned' every few years, and won't stain up my new white gutters (Hughes does gutters, too). Dhughes people have taken the training to put this type roof on.
Do get on the schedule early as the seem to have all the work they can get (and I think we got them 2 or 3 more customers). They can do roofs in the winter - it just takes a bit longer. They can't take a roof off (at least shake) in the rain, but, they can put a roof on when it is raining.
