"It was pleasure to provide my services to you. Thank you [Member Name Removed] for your review. 🙏"
Dmitry was a bit late (maybe half an hour or 45 minutes? for the initial estimate, but we live in West Seattle which is like the end of the Earth for a lot of people. and traffic can be pretty bad getting here so I didn't think much about it. He had a look at our floors. I initially wanted only the living room done but figured I might as well find out how much the bedroom would be as well. Dmitriy opined that we'd be foolish not to do the hall as well so I said to include that on the estimate. Since the bedroom and hall were fir they'd require a third coat, he said, so we might as well get a third coat on the oak floor in the living room as well. We discussed how the quarter-round would have to be removed in the bedroom and he asked if we'd want him to put up sheeting to keep the dust, etc. out of the other rooms. The plastic, he said, would be an additional $40. That seemed like a lot to me but my partner said yes to it. I asked Dmitriy to give me an estimate for everything, with all the details broken out: how much for each room, for removing and reinstalling the quarter-round, the plastic sheeting etc. and he agreed to that.
A few days later I received the estimate:
Resand existing hardwood floors in great room,
hallway and bedroom. Finish with light stain and 3
coats of swedish finish. Hang plastic on doors ways
for additional dust control. Price is after coupon
discount.: $1914.18 (tax to be added later)
The total square footage involved wasn't listed on the quote but it's about 425 sf. To say that the estimate was higher than I expected is an understatement. Figuring the unit price for the additional square footage at $3 and 150 sf already covered by the Big Deal, the third coat was apparently costing about $1000. Because I'd realized that the oak floor was very thin--which I wasn't sure Dmitry had realized, I decided to cut back to just the bedroom floor and emailed asking for a revised estimate, citing the high initial estimate and my concern about the thinness of the oak floor. I provided a template so that he'd understand the level of detail I wanted:
Please give me an estimate for doing just the bedroom (which I think is
close to 150 sq ft) with a third coat of finish and with and without
stain (I?m still not sure I want that). Please also list what the
additional fee is for removing the baseboards as I think we might be
able to handle that ourselves. I don?t think we need the plastic
sheeting in the other rooms of the house. Ideally, I'd like your
estimate to list
Total sq ft:
Covered by Angies List "big deal":
Refinishing and 2 coats of finish not covered by "big deal" 150 sq ft:
Third coat of finish:
Stain:
Removal and reinstallation of baseboards:
Any additional charges:
TOTAL:
Dmitry responded promptly telling me that the oak floor was "top nailed 1/4-inch" and could be refinished but agreed to provide a new estimate. There was a delay in getting the revised estimate; when I emailed five days later to ask for it Dimitry said he had sent it but he would send it again. Three days later I received the following revised estimate:
Resand Family room with 2 coats of swedish finish. $756.00
Resand bedroom and hall (fir floors) with two coats
of swedish finish. Price after coupon. $74.00
Add third coat of finish.(recomended as minimum
for soft grain woods such as fir) $246.40
It still didn't have the level of detail I wanted and I had already said that I'd decided to do only the bedroom. More back and forth followed, with increasingly long gaps in response times. On May 1 I sent an email noting that we were still waiting for a response to a message sent on April 1 and suggesting that perhaps it would be best for him to refund the $249 I'd paid on the Big Deal so we could all move on with our lives. Dmitry replied, saying that my messages kept going to his spam filter and, fair enough, one of his went to mine. But after that happened, I started checking my spam filter for messages from him.
We finally arranged a day to have the bedroom done with three coats of low-VOC and no stain. We removed the quarter-round and hung the plastic sheeting ourselves. Dmitry said he'd be by "around 9:00." It was around 9:45 that we phoned to check on his whereabouts; he was just pulling up.
I stayed home for the day, mostly in the backyard. The actual work went pretty smoothly (though Dmitry left the front door open repeatedly though I had mentioned during the initial visit that I had a cat I didn't want to get out of the house. I kept closing the door; he kept leaving it open.) At one point he plugged something (a shop vac maybe?) into an outlet in the bedroom and blew a fuse. (The wiring in the house also dates to 1926.) I don't blame him for the blown fuse but I do wonder why he then attempted to find another outlet to use in another room which would have just resulted in another blown fuse.
He did a great job of cleaning everything up after he was finished and the floor really is beautiful now. All three coats went on the same day (and the low-VOC stuff is great; practically no smell at all). As he was leaving we talked briefly about the living room floor and he said that the top nailed floor is more expensive to have done but certainly can be done successfully. Possibly if he'd explained that on one of the earlier estimates, it would have made a difference to us.
If it weren't for the bizarre, undetailed estimates and the difficulty in communicating, I'd be giving Artistic Hardwoods a rave review. As it is, I wouldn't recommend them because communications were so frustrating. I'd recommend that Dmitriy hire an office person to arrange his schedule and prepare estimates.
Initially, I had to contact Dmitriy twice to set a date, but he may have been extra busy due to the coupon deal on Angie's List. Anyways he really listened to what I wanted done, and he arrived on the set date and his work is FANTASTIC, so I would not hesitate to hire him again or recommend him to a friend. He really does QUALITY work.

On the day of installation everyone showed up on time. Dmitriy and his two employees started the vinyl removal to assess the situation as we requested the floor level be within 1/16th inch of the hard wood in adjoining rooms (living room and dining room). They found two layers of vinyl and the bottom layer had been heavily glued directly to the sub-floor with no plywood in between. This not only made removal very difficult but it also affected our ability to use the hard wood for the installation as the floor would be too high for adjoining rooms. Dmitriy left with one other worker to go to another site and Ben stayed to complete the work. While he started the vinyl removal I ended up purchasing laminate flooring at a local store. The store loaded up the boxes in my car and I brought them back to the work site.
Ben powered through the tough removal process without complaint. We cleaned the work floor before he installed the underlayment. He then began installing the laminate flooring and after one box found there were three boxes that didn't match the flooring originally chosen. The store had loaded my cart with two different products which I should have double checked in the first place. I returned the incorrect ones and had them replaced with the correct boxes. Fortunately, Ben noticed the laminates didn't match right away and the first box he chose to install was the correct flooring so there was no need for a do-over. By the time I returned Ben had the other boxes laid so there was no delay in installation.
After installation, Dmitriy came by to check the project and to receive feedback. I asked Dmitriy about help moving the appliances back into the kitchen without scratching the new floor so this could all be in place before my husband returned the next day from a fishing trip. Without hesitation Dmitriy went and retrieved an "Air Sled" which he had with him. For an additional cost, he hooked it up and moved the appliances back into place. The Air Sled allows you to easily and safely move heavy appliances around on a cushion of air without damaging the floor.
This is one hard working crew and their professionalism and work ethic were very apparent. They were willing to work with us so we met budget and didn't charge extra for the difficulty the job created. They had a "can do" attitude at every twist and turn which was refreshing.
My husband and I were very impressed with the work performed and we were appreciative of their efforts to safely put the appliances back. We will bringing them back to laminate the downstairs laundry rooms and hallways.
"Thank you!"
"Thank you! Always feel good to take care of people who knows how to appreciate!"
He measured the floor and gave me a price, offering me an Angie's List discount current at the time. I had gotten a quote from another floor contractor but Dmitry's price was better, offering two coats of finish rather than one.
**(I gave them a B for price only due to the fact that the actual work was pretty quick; less than a day of work for the whole process, although, as I said, his price was as good or better than others I had found, and ended up being an excellent choice. I feel the job they did was worth the price.)
We scheduled the floor repair to begin in a few days. I believe he actually was able to start the next morning due to a cancellation. Dmitry and his partner showed up at the house on time and worked very quickly. After a few hours they were done with the buffing, had applied the first coat of finish and promised to come back in 2 days to finish up, as agreed. When I looked at it after a day or so, I was very nervous because the finish was very shiny and I knew that a Swedish finish should not be. I called Dmitry with that concern and he very patiently answered my questions and explained that the first coat is shiny but the finished floor would be the matte Swedish finish that I wanted. Not having good luck with contractors thus far, I was pretty reluctant to give him my confidence, but he was very friendly, helpful and professional during every contact.
I did not have to wait the two days; they were able to come the next day to finish the process. Again, they showed up as promised, worked quickly and were out, leaving the floor to dry. The next day I opened up the windows and walked on the floor to inspect the job. What I found was, in essence, a new gorgeous hardwood floor. I could not see any of the former scratches on the floor, even though that was not promised nor expected. I was stunned and elated! Could it be that this contractor actually did the quality of work that he claimed to do, at the price agreed? It appeared so. I did notice some small areas that were still shiny and I called Dmitry to let him know. He told me that those areas would become less shiny with wear and would soon look like the rest of the floor. As I was leaving, I did notice what appeared to be a smudge in the finish in the hallway. It was small but noticeable in the right lighting. I called him and he promptly sent his partner to fix it. We did have to work with our tenant to schedule the work but Paul was very quick to repair that area, and the floor is breathtakingly gorgeous. Like I said, just like a new floor.
I highly recommend Artistic Hardwood Flooring. He seems to be a very honorable young man, as does his partner, and I could not be happier with the work they did for us. Admittedly I am picky about the jobs that I have done. I expect service contractors to be true professionals, and to do top-notch work. I feel that Dmitry gave us that. And I was most impressed that even after I had paid him, he did not hesitate to come back to fix that spot. Some say they will and it ends up being a nightmare to get them to finish the job right. I was very relieved that this time was different.
Thank you Dmitry and Paul!!
"Thank you for your feedback. It was pleasure to meet you and complete your needs!"
The price was good. You are paying for quality so don't be afraid to spend a little more if needed.
Dimitriy warned me that the swedish oil is toxic so we should be out of the house. Since the house is empty (we have not moved in yet), this worked out well. If you are currently living in your house, you should find alternate housing for at least a few days when the smell is strongest.
The floors should last 10+ years and I am glad that we hired Artistic to get our floors done. I would do business with them again anytime.
"Thank you! It was pleasure to do business with you and say "warm welcome" to the Washington!!!!! Hope you enjoying the weather before it will get nasty (rain) here. But the grass is always greener here than in CA."
