First let me say this was not our first rodeo. We had counter tops installed in our previous home with another contractor that found on Angie's list. Our experience with the previous company was wonderful and the job turned out beautiful. We did not use them this time because we could not find the stone we wanted at their location. (See our A rating review of JC Marble Expo in Des Moines. They did a beautiful job on our last home.)
This installation with InTown Granite and Marble was a nightmare. When they arrived we were admiring the stone and the installers told us to leave the room because they did not want us to watch the install. Now we have a very large kitchen which flows into a very large family room. We were standing in the family room which was not at all in their work area.
We had this job done in November of 2015. Right after the install I had a bad accident and was bed ridden for several months.
After I was able to move around better, I had a chance to better examine the work that was done. What a disappointment! The cutout for the sink overlaps the sink opening on either side, reducing the work area in the sink. It should be flush with the sink opening, as our last installation was done. Why buy a large sink if the stone is not cut to allow you to use all the sink space?
The sink cutout is rough in several spots. When you run your finger around it you can feel some rough spots, flat spots, and even some chip!. This edge should be rounded smooth. Bad finish job.
The overflow drain was installed in the wrong position, so that if it does overflow it will flow all over the counter tops and floor rather than into the sink as it should.
The only seam is centered on the sink bowl..part on the front edge of the sink and part behind the faucet up to the wall. That seam is jagged since the edges were not smoothed before adhering the stone together. Installers also cracked the front section,,,about a 2-1/2" horizontal crack, which they filled. However the filler they used is white and does not match the white in the counter top! Therefore the seams and the crack look very bad...JAGGED AND OBVIOUS COLOR DIFFERENCE. (the previous installer at our last home used a clear filler which disguised the seams very well) I don't think these installers had much experience which could explain the botched job.
The faucet is a little off center,,,meaning it not lined up with the center divider of the sink bowls. I could probably live with that, but not the rest of this.
When I called about the problems I was told they would call back with answers for me. To this day (mid April 2016) they have not called me back or offered any service to correct the problems. And to top it off...we were told when we ordered that we would get their "Angie's List discount". In reviewing the final payment they asked for upon completion of the installation, we noticed they did NOT apply the discount! All in all a BAD EXPERIENCE and we will not deal with them again.
Do NOT use InTown for your project! They do not stand behind their product or workmanship. 3 weeks after they installed a new vanity in my master bath I ended up with "green bloom". This is caused by the glue accelerant used by the installers reacting to the stone and caused bright green spots. It took well over a month and several calls and emails (sales rep was Jonathan) to get the installers back out. They completely admitted it was an issue with the glue accelerant they used and left me with some absorption paste to pull out the green. It didn't work. More emails and I was told "it was part of the beauty of the natural stone" and there was nothing they can or would do to help me. So now I'm stuck with the "natural beauty" of bright green spots on my brown/white granite. Thanks InTown - won't ever use you or recommend you to anyone.
The Intown Granite team did great work. They have a wide selection of stone and the price was very fair. Their consultant advised me on color and guided me to the piece we finally chose. I am very happy with the installation. The Intown team demolished tile and grout and installed granite with underhung sink, included in the final price. I found the team to be hardworking, professional, and meticulous and they left the area very clean.
Only "problem" was that they were unable to make the edge profile I wanted due to the type of granite I picked, but their explanation was reasonable and I liked the way they did it anyway.
