We replaced inexpensive laminate with solid surface countertops with an integrated sink several years ago. Solid surface was a poor choice in our busy kitchen. The counters scratched easily and the dark colors we chose made sure they were all visible. The sink required a lot of work to keep it from staining. We were looking for something to replace these counters after just a few years.
This time we took much more time and investigated concrete, granite and quartz because of their reputations. We wanted a quality stainless steel sink and new fixtures as well. Our kitchen is still a busy place and the counters are heavily used. After a thorough examination we chose quartz for our new counters.
Our solid surface counters came from a contractor we found at a home show. This time we decided to go through a company we know and trust- Costco- and their local subcontractor is Floform Countertops in Kent. The sales rep who came to our home was well versed in his products and answers to our questions without needing to get back to us. He was even quick to respond the next day when an additional question arose and we called his cell phone.
About a week later another Floform employee arrived to take precise measurements. We were then told of approximate install dates. The existing counters would be removed one day and the new ones installed the next. Floform met the dates they had promised. The old counters were removed with little hassle (other than our need to clear out the cabinets and move the refrigerator). This process was a one-man job and took about three hours. The next day the counter install crew of 2 was at our home at the time promised and had their work done in just over two hours. A third employee showed up later to hook up our sink and disposal and dishwasher and stove.
And it was the stove that caused the only problem with this project. We have a downdraft fan oven/cooktop unit installed in our island. The fan has two speeds and has worked perfectly for many years. After the install was complete the worker who connected everything did something to the stove electrical connection such that the fan only had one speed. We called our sales rep and he came out the next day to confirm the fan was supposed to have two speeds but no longer did. Floform sent another worker out who hooked the fan up properly so that both speeds are working, but in the process he somehow disconnected the fan motor from the stove itself. The fan runs on its two different speeds but did not pull steam or smoke down anymore. There was a connection between the fan and stove before Floform did this work. Then there was not. Floform told us this isn't their responsibility.
The contractor who installed the solid surface countertops years ago faced the same need to make sure the fan and stove were connected when they put the stove back. They apparently solved the problem with duct tape. That certainly wasn't the best approach. But they did more then Floform has agreed to do. We had to hire an installer from the store where we bought the stove to come out to connect it properly. It took a crew of two about 20 minutes. They charged us $160. While we are pleased our stove now works as it did before Floform installed our counters, we are not pleased with Floform's performance. Granted, downdraft stove/cooktop combinations probably aren't that common and are a bit more work to move than a standard range. A far better course of action would be to tell a customer up front that something in a particular kitchen might be more difficult. Arrange to have an installer available who can do the work. Tell the customer in advance that there will be an extra charge for this. It shouldn't come down to the customer to finish the work the contractor left undone.
In early November, 2015, about 4 months after the counters were installed, we received a call from the sales manager of Floform. He said they had been reviewing our installation and comments they had received from people they had given our number to for reference purposes. I had talked to two people who were considering countertops from Floform. In both cases I praised the product and the sales representative and the crew that removed the old counters and installed the new ones. I also clearly noted the problem we had with reconnecting our downdraft stove and gave the potential customers the same advice I gave here: make sure you point out anything unusual to the sales rep and the measuring technician so you don't get surprised like we were.
The sales manager said "this is not how we do business." He apologized for the problems and sent us a $300 Costco gift card. We were only out $160 to hire installers to reconnect our stove, so this was a particularly nice gesture. The sales manager did not ask us to change our Angie's List review or what we say to referred potential customers.
My advice still stands, be sure to point out anything that might be unusual in the room where you are having counters installed. But given this unexpected follow-up response from Floform to go beyond our expectations of them, I have raised their grades in this review.
Floform sells a good product in Cambria quartz countertops and they were easy and pleasant to deal with up until the issue with our range. If your project will involve an unusual appliance or electrical or plumbing connections that may be unique, be certain you pin down the sales rep and the measurement guy and the installers about exactly what they will and will not do.
We love the countertops. They are everything we thought they would be and we love having a quality sink again as well.
We'd specified exactly the countertops we wanted in our remodel contract and that is what the contractor thought he prepared his pricing based on. Our general contractor had told the countertop installer he sought bids from what we wanted. He reasonably assumed they bid based on providing the correct products. To make a long story short, we believe that company tried to do a bait and switch. We didn't know they were not Cambria distributors until the day their measuring guy came to our house along with his samples of other brands... My husband and I gave the other brands a solid 2nd look but nothing was close enough to the lovely sparkly Cambria Whitney to change my mind, even though I knew it would delay countertop installation for possibly weeks or a month or more. Grrr.
I researched and found there is only 1 certified Cambria installation company in Washington State (plus 1 in B.C. and 1 in Oregon were the next closest.) Who knew?!? My contractor went to work getting things handled by Floform. It felt to me like they provided expedited attention to our situation. I think we only had to wait another 15 days or so for installation, with the measurements appointment happening fairly swiftly, too.
They provided the correct Cardigan red for my husband's special prep area as well as the Whitney everywhere else. Whitney is even more dazzling/special when installed in larger pieces than the small square sample I'd been loving. The installers were on time, worked diligently, had minimal adjustments to make, and cleaned up. Couldn't have run any smoother.
.S. I do not know what FloForm actually charged my Contractor, hence the $00.00 above. I do know the evil 1st installers had not bid based on supplying a high end product like Cambria. My husband and I did not feel the contractor was solely to blame for relying on a company he'd worked well with in the past. Thus, we offered to pay the amount by which our remodeling contract would have increased if the correct bid based on Cambria Quartz had been there in the first place. Our contractor asked if $1000 more was acceptable. We said yes. (I am confident the price difference would have been more than $1000 and appreciate him shouldering some of the price gap in addition to all the headaches/time getting the new installer on board.)
NOTE: Costco offers Cambria quartz, among others, for its kitchen countertop program. It gets installed by FloForm. I don't know what it would have cost if we'd gone through Costco but you might check it out.
From start to finish, the process went very smoothly. We are very happy with the product. The quartz is a little more expensive but unbeatable quality! The installers did a great job too, installing them onto old kitchen cabinets in a 100 year old house. They are perfectly level. Later, I had to have them come back out to cut one edge so we could fit in our new refrigerator. They were prompt and professional during that experience, as well.
The in-home quote was instant and thorough. Scheduling was convenient and timely. We had some concerns after the initial install but Floform came out not once but twice and addressed everything to our complete satisfaction. There are no seams on our island, but 2 seams on the surrounding countertops and they are barely noticeable even though it is a solid light color (Clyde Cambria).
They always did a good job of setting up to protect the floors and cabinets and cleaned up. They showed up on time, when scheduled, and gave me a call when they were on their way. Both Laurie (scheduler) and Kelly (tile designer) were great to work with and Jason (install manager) is so meticulous and really knows his stuff! Both Paul and Greg (tile install) were also fabulous and were patient as we were pretty picky about how the mosaic backsplash tile was laid out. The only person I wasn't totally impressed with was the one who hooked up the plumbing and range.
We will not hesitate to use Florform again when we are ready for new countertops and tile backsplashes in our 3 bathrooms. They did a good job start to finish and whenever we had a concern, they completely resolved it.
Since Floform is the only distributor for Cambria -they have you at a disadvantage. Even with this long delay they wouldn't make any concessions. I love my new counter tops but beware!
The Fineline rep seemed more interested in steering towards choices that were easy for Fineline.
The fabrication people (templater, cutter and installation) did good work but seemed overworked.
