"Thank you [Member Name Removed]. It was great working for you guys. I hope the rest of your remodeling goes well."
"I feel like this is a case of mistaken identity since you had nothing but good to say at the time and actually did call us back for another estimate. I don't know what you mean by "He did a little bit of effort but I did most of the effort." That just doesn't sound like something we worked on."
I can't say enough about Kirbyworks. They are the best. They were punctual and the whole experience was A+ This is really corny, but we missed them when they were through so they painted our neighbors home and are doing another one on this street this spring.
"Well (member name) we didn't just gain loyal customers but gained new friends. Nothing corny about that!"
"We sure had fun on this project. Couldn't think of a nicer couple to paint for."
"It was your mojitos (member name removed). Perfect way to end the day my friend."
"It was great working with you [member name removed]."
My agreement with Kirby was that I would specify the colors to be used, but he would determine the brand and sheen of the paint. I believe that Sherwin-Williams paint was used throughout the house.
I paid 50% of the agreed-upon price prior to the start of the project and the remaining 50% upon completion. Since I paid cash, I don't know if the company accepts credit cards. I graded price as a B because the price is higher than average, but I knew that to be the case before I hired the firm.
The project took multiple (6?) full days of work for one of Kirbyworks' painters. The same painter did my entire project, which I appreciate. Some surfaces were rolled; some were sprayed. The painter carefully patched cracks and nail pops and then texturized these spots to match the surrounding wall. Once painted, I can't tell where the imperfections were. This attention to detail is why I was willing to pay a premium price.
The final product looks great; I am happy enough that I have already asked Kirbyworks to do some exterior painting.
1/21/2014 Update: Kirbyworks performed additional painting for me throughout 2013 as part of the remodel of my house. Beto (his main painter) is excellent at his job. I believe that high quality paint was used throughout.
Because the interior remodeling of my house was done in stages, the painting was necessarily spaced out over the year. Kirby was good about accommodating my schedule. In total, I paid Kirby ~$10,000. That cost was higher than it needed to be because some areas were painted more than once when I changed my mind on the color. I don't blame Kirby for that!
"Thank you. We're looking forward to doing some more painting for you."
"Thanks Andrea! I really DO like working for artists. Seriously. :)"
He worked with my realtor to come into the house, take measurements and provide an estimate. We closed on a Friday and he was willing to work over the weekend to have the house ready for us the following week.
The job wasn't scheduled to start until Saturday morning, but we closed early in the day on Friday and Kirby and Beto showed up Friday afternoon to get an early start. They worked through the weekend, were professional and courteous throughout, and the results are amazing. We have some complicated tray ceilings and vaulted ceilings in the bathroom, with lots of odd angles, and yet the detail work was great.
All in all, a very solid job. Kirby clearly takes pride in his work.

I am updating this report on 10/14/11. Kirby contacted me shortly after I posted the above review, and came over to look at the work. It turns out that he did call me back and leave a message, but somehow I never got it - not sure if it was the home phone where somebody cleared the message, or my good old AT&T cell phone, where voice mails have been known to disappear into the void. He looked at the checkerboard pattern in the stain and told me that it was caused by the machine that planes the wood when it is cut. I was still a little dubious because the wood felt perfectly smooth when I ran my hand over it, and I would expect to feel bumps if it was marked by a planer - but he knows a lot more about wood than I do, so maybe he is right... At any rate, since it was under our bar area and not noticeable, we agreed that it did not need to be restained. He looked at the splotchy area and agreed to re-sand and re-apply stain to that section of board. He asked if I wanted him or his worker to do the work, and I said that I would prefer if he did it, so he did come back and re-stain the board himself. It took quite a long time to do the work because there was a section of the board that refused to take the stain (that had previously stained just fine). Kirby then realized that the sander had been getting too close to the tile floor grout and picking up some of the waxy sealant and spreading it around the edge of the board, so he cleaned it with solvent and sanded the board down one more time, making sure not to get too close to the tile. That time the board took the stain nicely - it looked great! However, in the process of all the stripping and resanding, Kirby accidentally sanded a couple spots on the dark laminate floor molding under the board he was staining, so he ended up having to replace the floor molding.
I have to say that once Kirby knew there was a problem, he worked very hard to resolve it. Based on Kirby's efforts to resolve the work problems, I am revising my ratings of Quality, Professionalism, and Overall Experience to B.
"Not much in the original report is accurate but suffice it to say this project provided some challenges which took a bit of effort to try to overcome."
