Excellent. Karl is very creative in problem-solving, extremely neat and organized, thorough, punctual, and has a great attention to detail. His work is top notch, and he seems to be able to do pretty much anything from routine stuff to high quality woodworking. He is also a lot of fun to have around.

The trellis has 17 individual wood parts, plus four spacer blocks and a lot of galvanized fasteners. The original had four custom-cut 8-foot cedar posts plus three clear fir 6x6 blocks, eight pieces of 2x6, and four pieces of 2x8 standard-size lumber, all trimmed and dadoed. I let Karl talk me onto cedar instead of fir, but he did NOT tell me that he would have to cut the boards from bulk cedar stock. Milling the 2x6 and 2x8 board was very expensive; Karl charged me for 17 hours labor! Because he did the work, I paid him. But I complained strenuously about his failure to tell me that switching from fir to cedar eliminated the possibility of using standard lumber-yard sizes (or did it??). I believe he knew he was taking advantage of me. I would have given Karl an A for quality but for the fact that the cedar he selected was not completely clear. Two of the finished components have visible knots. There were no knots in the original fir that I chose myself. After he delivered the parts, I built the trellis myself without his help.

A guest accidentally grabbed a wooden spindle in a stair banister and broke it. Karl picked up the broken spindle and  took it to his shop for repairs. A couple  of days later he arrived to replace the fixed spindle. Karl has a $300 minimum and the spindle work fell under the minimum. So he brought with him a can of stain and touched up some nicks and dings on the bannister. He also fixed a stripped screw on a decorative door handle.
He arrived on time for all appointments.

Karl did a fine job installing our kitchen cabinets and refinishing our hardwood floors.  Not perfect, but as good as one will likely find, especially for the price he gave us.
We initially hired Karl to install our kitchen cabinets.  We had asked for estimates from Karl and a couple of other contractors both for installing the cabinets and building a pony wall in the kitchen (against which a short run of the cabinets would sit against).  Karl was the lowest estimate for the cabinet installation.  Based on the estimates we received for building the pony wall, including Karl?s, we decided to do that job ourselves.
Karl came out promptly to do the work when the cabinets arrived, but the modifications required for some of the cabinets made his work slower than expected.  We used a refrigerator wall cabinet as the base cabinet for our farmhouse sink, which required Karl to add a base with a toe-kick to the bottom of the cabinet.  In addition, the actual refrigerator-wall cabinet (i.e., the one to be put above the refrigerator) had to be ?built out? using the refrigerator wall panels to make it flush with the front of our refrigerator.
Although we had earlier sent Karl the cabinet plans from the manufacturer, I don?t believe he had accounted for this additional work when he gave us his quote.  This fact was evidenced by a fair amount of complaining from him.  Accordingly, I became worried that Karl might feel compelled to rush through the rest of the job in order not to lose money on the deal.  I expressed my concern to Karl and told him that we would be willing to pay more than the original quote in order to compensate him for the unexpected work.
In the end, the cabinets turned out quite well.  The front of the cabinets are flush, and the cabinets themselves all plumb and square.
Karl also aligned the cabinet doors and drawers so that they would open and close properly.
In addition, Karl fixed a couple of my mistakes.  First, I had failed to account for the toe-kick on the main line of cabinets when measuring the hardwood floors, so there ended up being about an inch or so of exposed subflooring in front the toe-kick.  Karl suggested that if we were willing to pay for the work, he would have his floor guy pre-stain and cut some additional boards to fill in the crack.  Given that the alternative would have been to re-do the entire floor, we agreed.  Second, I inaccurately measured a soffit that runs across the center of our kitchen ceiling, the result being that one of our wall cabinets would not fit next to the soffit as planned.  Karl installed the cabinet beneath the soffit and used filler to effectively mask what would otherwise be an obvious error.
We later decided to have Karl refinish the hardwood floors in our kitchen and family room.  We made the decision after Karl came to the house to look at the cabinets and gave us a quote for doing the floors.  After giving us a quote, he even offered to replace some of the flooring for no additional charge.
The floors, which were in bad shape, turned out exceptionally well.  Scott, the guy that Karl subcontracts to do the floors, had planned to do almost all of the work before the cabinets were installed, saving only the last coat of finish until after the cabinets were in.  The pre-cabinet work on the floors was done promptly and looked good to us except for the fact that the floors looked shiny in some areas but not others.  But Scott called us later and told us he wasn?t satisfied with the results, so he came back after the cabinets were installed to sand, stain, and finish the floors again?no extra charge.  The floors now look like new.
There were, of course, some minor issues.  First, Karl split the wood in several of the cabinets when installing the screws that join adjacent cabinets.  Second, he installed two of the countertop supports on the back of our island upside down.  This mistake might have been understandably overlooked but for the fact that he had to measure and cut trim pieces to put beneath the supports, which would have revealed the disparity in the lengths of the supports.  Third, he didn?t cut holes in the sink cabinet for the dishwasher water lines, a task that would have required minimal time for him, but which required significant time for me to accomplish with my limited tools.  I brought these issues up with Karl and, needless to say, he has a different view of these matters.
But altogether Karl did solid work for a reasonable price.  In the end, he asked us for $800 more than the original quote, split between $500 for the additional floor work and $300 for the additional cabinet work.  In truth, I thought $300 was probably less than he deserved for the time he spent working on the sink cabinet and the refrigerator cabinet.  All said, I would readily hire Karl again for
future projects.

It was great! He was on time. (Actually early, which was awesome!) And it went very smoothly. Offered to install the fire alarm while he was here because he noticed that I had taken our old one down. He was very personable and tolerant of our five year old who was constantly asking him questions. He was a pleasure to have in the house. The fans worked out really well and the upstairs is much cooler. We will definitely have him back.

The project went very well.  Karl and his assistant arrived on time and performed the work within the first day.  The job was extended because I had to obtain some additional material.  We did not discover the need for the additional until the bannister was nearly complete.  Obtaining the material took approximately 1 week, and Karl was very flexible about returning for a very short time to finish the bannister.
The wallboard patch task was performed very well, especially the matching of the existing wall paper.
My wife and I would hire Karl again for virtually any project of any scale.

I liked this guy.  The work was pretty low-key.  I took the door to him, and he just glued the door together.

The quality of his work is good but the final bill ended up being more than twice what he quoted me.  He would disappear for hours at a time to buy materials and would still charge me for those hours.  He also installed a microwave in my kitchen.  That job took 9 hours when most people I know can take only 2 hours to do such a job.  I kept asking him for a bill he wouldn't give it to me.  When he finally gave me the bill, it ended up being over $2,000 instead of the $800 that he quoted me in the first place.  I would understand a little bit of a bump in price overtime but the fact that it ended up being more than twice the price is a bit much.  He's been refusing to talk to me about it.   He also had issues with showing up on time.
Response from Trim Wood & Preston Fine Woodworking
"I make every effort to ensure that my customers are happy with the quality of work as well as the service they receive from my company. I am pleased to see that you gave the quality of work an A rating, but disappointed to learn that you found the service and professionalism sub-par. If you'll recall, we had agreed on a price of $800 plus materials for a certain amount of work, which included installing crown moulding and pieces to the cabinets in your kitchen. At that point, I did not charge to purchase materials because that was part of the labor. However, when I arrived at your home, I discovered that you had added to the project, including building two custom cabinets, installing a new microwave, replacing sheetrock in the kitchen, running additional wiring, installing new duct work and repairing a piece of siding on the outside of the house. Because of the additional work, we agreed the costs would then be based on time and materials. At that point, the costs for time to purchase materials was then charged hourly. It is standard practice for contractors to charge for the time it takes to purchase materials for a project. Generally, the charge to have materials delivered by the building supply store can be $150 per hour. To control costs, I took the time to pick up the materials myself and bring them to your house. It was my understanding that you and your husband were in agreement on the higher cost of the project. Not knowing what exactly was quoted by other contractors, I cannot provide an accurate comparison of the work that I did to what they quoted. Based on good faith from the above agreement, I moved forward with your request for additional work on your basement, including running electrical wiring, installing a sound system, installation of backing for a flat panel TV, replacing sheetrock, installing a soffit, framing a new wall, and removal and disposal of old sheetrock. You had asked for a written quote for this additional work, which I provided and to which you agreed. I believe I made a good-faith effort to meet the needs for the work you requested at a reasonable cost. Other customers have given me a quality rating. I am sorry to see that you feel otherwise. I would like to see this matter resolved in a way that's fair to everyone. PS: I did not require a start up payment due to the size of the original job. As of today, I have not received any payments for materials or labor cost."

Karl promptly responded to my request for an estimat, was willing to share his ideas and listen to my feedback regarding scope and budget, and was honest about the projected date he could do the work given his schedule was booked out for some time. Once he was available, he tried to work around my schedule, performed the work within budget, and was very attentive to clean-up, including leaving plastic down on carpet so I could then complete my own part of the project. He was very friendly and helpful throughout the project, and we talked about future projects to undertake in the future.

Karl is professional and courteous. We'll continue to use him for many projects on our home.
