Hardware & Home Improvement Stores, Carpet Installation + 2 more
It is our first time ordered home depot service and the experience is very interesting.
First their product is good and price is good. The carpet price is the lowest among the similar produces in nearby stores. Maybe 5% to 8% lower than similar product in competing store.
When I purchased carpet and garage door, I thought they are installed by HomeDepot. But they are actually not. HomeDepot seems to contract those service to third-party. And price for the service is very good. Carpet installation is free, and the garage door installation was just $180 for a 16 feet by 7 feet garage door. I hired a general contractor who has already provided low price service to us, and the price he gave for garage door installation is around $500 to $600.
Issues: The third party contractors HomeDepot selected is very similar to small contractors you saw. One of them is a bit hard to contact. It took me several days to reach the person. Another is family business. There were issues with the schedule, which just like many other small contractors I hired recently. It might be the busiest time I purchased these services. In general it does not look like HomeDepot anymore where you can call and always expect somebody to answer your call. You feel like dealing with small business for those services. And once I went to HomeDepot store to check the status. The store sales can find a general status in their computer, but does not really know what happened at their contractors site.
But HomeDepot does backup their quality with store brand. There is a time that delivery date is missed. I complaint to HomeDepot store, and although it was very difficult to squeeze into their contractors schedule, they made it happen. I got several calls from their customer service later on to make sure the service was delivered properly and on time.
The services are all very good quality. The carpet was installed perfectly, and the garage door is beautiful.
In general, HomeDepot seems to find qualified third contractors and provide very good price and also backed up their service with store brand if something happens.

I called Customer care prior to ordering, since my in store person couldnt help. ( they didnt know how it was shipped or when it would be delivered so asked me to call the customer care number and just order online)
My concern was how the product was going to be shipped. I needed small bags, both for my back and because all the other sites
( while cheaper) were only done in lbs and in large bulk delivery. I was assured by the rep that it was in bags so I could move and confirm the amount sent. ( I dont have a scale or lift that big!)
Delivery came a few days later....a huge burlap sack that was labled 1000LBS! Exactly NOT what I wanted. I asked the driver if he had a sq ft or cu ft anywhere because the bag seemed small in comparison to the size bags I got in store- and how many would be there. He said no, and quot;but I guess it must have been weighed at some point?and quot;
Not a help since home depot does NOT list a weight ANYWHERE on their site!
I called to complain about the delivery. The rep who answered said I must have been and quot;misinformedand quot; ( by them , mind you) and it only came in a large sack. I was told he would look into it and e-mail me back a response if not call the next morning since the distributer was closed..........no email or call.
We decided to go ahead and spred the rubber mulch- if it covered the 400 sq ft play area then it must be right???? BIG MISTAKE!
My fear was realized as it only covered 3/4 of the area when it should have done a 1 inch with a little extra. ( now I cant return it-ugh)
I called customer service again after 4 days of waiting. I was again told I was and quot;misinformedand quot; and it was the only way it was sent. They told me I should have measured it ......its a round bag and they give measurements for a cube- not accurate.
They then had the nerve to try to sell me more at a 15% discount as their idea of a resolution!and quot;( I bought it 10%off- its not on sale anymore AND could have bought 2000lbs - SAME color, rating, and type for same cost if it was in bulk! Thats 2x as much!
I just wanted the small BAGS!!! )
Are you kidding me?! You already screwed me over once , I didnt get what I thought and dont think I got it all -now you want me to do this AGAIN?!!!
No offer to send a little extra or a partial refund was made.
They made it out to be MY problem- even though there were multiple obvious faults! Not how a company should operate. I will NEVER get anything I cannot physically buy in store EVER again from them!

The contractor ( Pat's professional) sent out by Home Depot was professional in all aspects. The job was completed on time and the area cleaned at the end of each day. Questions were quickly answered. When problems were encountered the contractor briefed us and provided quick resolution.

Hardware & Home Improvement Stores, Roofing
I didn't go in to the store. I went to the website and they put me in touch with the sales representative and came out and did a free inspection and an estimate. There was really one product offered, but there were different colors of the shingles, so I can't really say that he showed me a variety of options. It's just the reliability of the company standing behind the roof. I didn't want to go with somebody with less roofing experience. The financing was attractive, so I went with them. The payment plan is pretty excellent.

Water Heater Service
The job was to replace two gas water heaters that had failed the previous day. The heaters were 20 years old.
I checked Home Depot's website to find possible replacement heaters. I called the Home Depot phone number that the website said to call and was connected to a person at the Aurora Village Home Depot. She gave me a quote and said they could replace them the next day. She told me that gas water heaters required a building permit/inspection in my area, and that there would likely be additional work required to meet code, but that the technician would give me a quote before he started any work. I shopped around and discovered that the Home Depot price for basic installation was about 20% under the two other places I called so I placed the order.
Mitch, the installer, showed up at the agreed time, explained every aspect of the work that would be needed to do the installation (about $1400 for the additional work needed) and it all made sense. Mitch completed and tested the installation and showed me the specific work he performed to complete the installation. The entire job, from initial inspection to completion was about 4.5 hours. The work was very well done and the heaters and the water system in the house worked perfectly. The job easily passed the city building inspection.
I was amazed at how easy the whole building permit/inspection experience was. Home Depot (or the contractor) created the building permit on line. Then gave me all the paperwork and information I needed to schedule the inspection.
This Home Depot and this contractor did their job extremely well.

Flooring
I ordered a flooring at home depot 6/14 2011. I paid $700.00 ahead of time. There was a sample and I talked with a (specialist) about the floor before I ordered it. this was a Bruce product. The delivery date two weeks out. I scheduled a person to install it 21/2 weeks out.In two weeks I received a call saying 3 of the 8 cartons were damaged so they had to reorder it. I waited 2 more weeks and received a call that the 3 cartons were in. I called my installer and he scheduled a day for him to install it.When my husband went to pick it up they did not have the 3 cartons. He did pick up the 5 cartons, but one of the boxes was all banged up. When we opened the box, the wood did not resemble (anywhere near) the sample the floor specialist showed up. There was no wood grain, and a ugly yellow tint and very smooth. This was a engineered product. When I went to check it out I found out the specialist showed me the wrong product.I had to cancel my installer at a short notice wondering if I would have to pay him for a days work. There was a restocking fee. I was livid and talked to the Manager. He took the floor back with no stocking fee and I whent somewhere else to find my flooring.

Garage Door Service
We called to get an estimate on a roof repair or if needed replacement. The reps showed on time and took some time to look at the roof. They proposed a complete replacement and for a 30 year composite roof - gave us an estimate of $10,000. Their estimate for our 1500 sf single peak roof was nearly 2X another estimate we had gotten. I was disappointed that they did not think a repair was possible, and could not understand such a high price! Their warranty was good for the first 10 years or so, and obviously we knew the company would be around for years to come, but the price was astronomical. I asked for a copy of the estimate - and they seemed reluctant, until I insisted I would need it to compare materials used, etc. They were concerned I would release their info to competitors - and I assured them I would not. We did not contract with them as we found a contractor who confirmed we only needed a repair - costing $400.

Flooring
I got my bathroom tiles and installation through HD. They happily took my $ to arrange the measure but failed to call me back after to give me a quote. When I went into the store (as they failed to return phone calls), they said I hadn't chosen grout so they couldn't complete the quote... nobody had asked me to yet. They did the quote, it was wrong, tried to charge me for 'optional' services that wer not needed and for removing carpet that i'd done before the measurer came. got that issue sorted out, they failed to tell me that the tiles had arrived, I was notifed by the installers! On arrival to collect the tiles etc, there was a box with the half the tiles broken. They felt this was fine. Very poor customer service. Never responding to phone calls, always had to go into the store to resolve issues.

On the day they said they would, they got it installed for me. The gentleman in the store was very helpful. I knew what model I was looking for, they had it, and they told me when they could deliver it. Everything went according to plan. The price was $100 cheaper than the competitor.

The experience was very bad. First, the installer comes out and did a preliminary evaluation of the garage door, track, etc., and scheduled a future date for installation. Then, during the date of install, the installer came by, but they couldn't get the opener to work with my garage door. Then, they told me they didn't bring the right hardware, so they have to come back later in the week. I am very surprised because the whole point of first visit is to check to iron out any issue with the installation. A different guy showed up the second time, and still couldn't get it to work, but gave me a totally different reason from the first guy. He left and told us he will come back. Then, have not heard anything from him in a week. We called the company but no response, then we called HD. Finally, the contractor called us back, but claimed that our garage door track is so busted, they need to charge us to fix the garage door track before the opener is working. We agreed to pay, as we don't want to bring in a different company and go through the process again. The third guy come by and fix the track and garage opener seems to be working. However, after a week, the garage opener stopped working again. At this point, we were so fed up, so we called a local garage door company to come by to fix it. The local garage door guy fixed it within an hour, and we haven't had any problems since then. In short, I think HD use an incompetent contractor for doing the garage door opener installation, and I would strongly recommend to think twice before using an HD "installer."

Went very well. There was a glitch on installation because the person who measured the carpeting missed a walk in closet, but that issue was resolved quickly and well by Home Depot.

THE EXPERIENCE WAS NOT GOOD. I ORDERED THE CARPET WITH THE PROMISE THAT IT WOULD BE INSTALLED WITHIN 5 DAYS. THIS WAS IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE HAD COMPANY COMING. AFTER NOT HEARING FROM THE, AFTER SEVERAL DAYS, I CALLED AND THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T HAVE OUR ORDER ON FILE. I HAD TO GO BACK IN AND START ALL OVER AGAIN. OVERALL, IT WAS A BAD EXPERIENCE AND I WON'T USE HOME DEPOT FOR CARPETING AGAIN.
