They sealed off the rooms that were being sanded so the dust didn't float to other areas of the house, Tarps were put on the floor to minimize scratching the floor or tracking in dirt. And, they took any garbage (masking tape, etc.) away with them.
I also have two cats that I didn't want outside and they were very careful about keeping the door shut.
During the time they were here, my mother (85 yr. old) needed me. So, I left them alone in the house as well as gave them a key to the back door in case they needed to leave. They did leave for lunch, locked the house and then came back to finish the job.
