Because of a leak in our sunroom, I placed a telephone call on December 5th to Artisan Design Build (ADB) in Federal Way. I was referred to them by another company as ADB purportedly does repair work on sunrooms/solariums. I explained the problem to the lady and she was very understanding. We set an appointment for the owner, Bill, to come on Wednesday (12/10) at 10:00am. When no one appeared by 10:45am, I called the ABD?s telephone number and explained my concerns to the lady. She apologized and indicated she had forgotten about the appointment. She said she would place it on Bill?s schedule for Thursday (12/11) for the same time and promised he would be there. So when Bill did not show by 10:30am, I called again and lady stated he must be stuck in traffic. She said she would call him and get right back to me. Not having heard anything by 3:06pm, I tried called the business number. No answer, just voicemail. I left a message. I called again Friday (12/12) morning and again no one answered or responded to my voicemail. So, would you want to hire a contractor who acts this way? They also advertise on the web as ?HI-TECH Solariums?; but this entity hasn?t been licensed since 2009.
Description of Work: Nothing. Failed to show up for 2 appointments.

Job went very well.
Description of Work: Artisan gave us a bid for the remodel of our 2 condos. They installed cabinets in the kitchen, installed flooring throughout the condo and framed in doorways. They did a great job and were on time with the work done and very professional. I would use them again for other remodels.

Artisan has come out 3 times. They are very honest and competent, they have done great work on all of the projects. The people are very nice to deal with, I have nothing but good things to say about them. The prices are very fair as well. They are fair and nice! I once had someone come out the afternoon that I called them to re-work a deck that I was having painted in 2 weeks.
Description of Work: Artisan did some remodeling and repair job around my house.

remodeling, replacement windows

We had been trying to replace a very large aluminum clad window in our kitchen/eating area for several years. We had several different contractors/window companies come out to bid on the project. The bids were way beyond what we wanted to spend - one as high as $25,000. We ran into Bill at the Seattle Home Show and described the problem. He was pretty confident that he could come up with a window design we liked for a reasonable price. We set up a time for him to come out and had a very enjoyable caht with him while he took a good look at our problem windows. His design for replacing the window was so much more intelligent and streamlined than any of the others we had been offered and the bid price was the lowest we had seen. Bill is very careful about his contracts as he has had some issues with home owners in the past. We reviewed the contract fully and agreed on some rewording. He was amenable and agreeable to work with. My husband did getr frustrated a few times trying to get ahold of Bill, leaving voicemail and e-mail unanswered for a week or more. But for the most part, the project was completed within the time frame we discussed. We had some delays getting the actual glass, but by then Bill was aware of my husband's desires for communication and he kept us well informed. The guy who did the bulk of the work was very polite, friendly and professional. One of our issues with the old window was the heat in our kitchen area. During summer months this west facing window produced a real greenhouse effect - often reaching temps of 100 degrees. Bill assured us that the double paned windows would be tempered to keep the heat down and they do - at least for the most part. On some very sunny days we now reach temps in the 80's. A vast improvement. The finished product is really a stunning addition to our home and we are very pleased.
Description of Work: Replacement of large aluminum windows (garden window) in our kitchen area. This entailed pulling out the old windows/frames, and re-framing, re-glazing with some interior and exterior finish work. The windows were @ 80 x 80 and included a 2 foot section of the roof in a 'garden' style. There had been some wearing away around the frame and some minor water damage to the wood frame.

Well, the bottom line is Artisan Design Build Inc. with Bill Rowe and Jackie came in on budget and on time. In fact we got to start using the kitchen on Monday, 11/17/2008. It was such a pleasure to work with a contractor who is knowledgeable, professional, trustworthy and most of all honorable. As a footnote, we have since had them back for a small $3,000 job that looks fantastic.
Description of Work: Early in 2008 my wife and I were contemplating a remodel of the kitchen in our late 70s tri-level in Kent, Wa. We thought of a number of configurations and possibly even an addition. In February we went to the Seattle Home Show and talked with a number of designers/contractors including Artisan Design Build Inc. In the summer we had several of the contact come out to talk with us and provide us their designs and estimate. We were astonished at how unprofessional some of these companies were who represented themselves among the elite in their business. (Just to let you know, we aren't new to remodels or additions. In 2003 we added on a 2,4oo square foot addition that it wasn't a great experience and was extremely delayed. Enter Bill Rowe of Artisan Design Build Inc. He came in and ask about our needs, requirements, budget and general family lifestyle. We discussed several options and he returned with two designs. One within our current house structure and one with a ten foot addition to the back of our main floor. With slight modifications, we decided on the 250 square foot addition, and work commence in early September, 2008 and since we always have a large Thanksgiving, Bill promised the work would be complete by then. For your information, this addition project required full build work including demolition, excavation, foundation framing, trusses, roofing plumbing, electrical, HVAC, sheetrock, floors, cabinets, finishing, painting, etc. The complete package. Bill at Artisan Design Build Inc. and his subs handled it all extremely well and professionally. He even handled the demanding Kent building inspectors with special consideration and obvious respect. His wife, Jackie, assisted us in choosing the granite (3 slabs and over 90 square feet installed), the cabinets (27 boxes and 74 linear feet) and heated flooring (over 445 square feet). The extra 250 square feet allowed us to not only get our dream kitchen with 2 eating bars but larger living and dining rooms as well.

All three projects went incredibly well. See the section above. Artisan Design Build is professional, totally trustworthy, reasonably priced and a pleasure to deal with. I have recommended them numerous times with no complaints from the other customers. I recommend Artisan Design Build without reservation. They are my Go To Guys for any home project.
Description of Work: I have had work done by Artisan Design Build on three seperate occasions from 1999 to 2009. I'm sorry that I no longer remember the amounts paid for these jobs but they were always very reasonable. Although there was one lower and three higher bids for the first job, I chose Artisan Design Build because they so clearly had a much better grasp of the design problems and solutions. I have never been sorry. The first job was removing a chronically leaking (and many times unsuccessfully repaired) glass ceiling and turning it into a plastered ceiling without leaks. I added some other incidental projects during the job as I saw how good they were. The next job came several years later and consisted of reworkng the roof of an underground garage where there was landscaping on top of the roof. We gave them the house key, went on vacation, and said see you when the job is done. There is no other company of any type that I trust enough to do that. When we got home, the job was done perfectly. The third job was several years after that and involved re-doing decks which had developed dry rot. For this job, Artisan came on an emergency basis the day after I called them to prop up the decks. Because our house painter noticed the problem only a few weeks before he was scheduled to paint, and repair needed to be done before painting could begin, we had to get going fast. I didn't have time to bid out this job and just asked Artisan for a ballpark figure because we weren't sure exactly how much trouble we would find when we got the area totally exposed. I know they will never pad the bill or cheat me. I have never done this with any other company and never would because you are setting yourself up for trouble, except with Artisan. The final bill was below the estimate. Artisan's job was done in time for the painters to get their painting done on schedule before our daughter's wedding. Atrisan Design Build has uniformly done an outstanding job of fine craftsmanship with reliable and professional workers at a very fair price. The company owners, as well as everyone who works for them, are a joy to work with. They accommodate special needs (such as making sure our indoor cat never escaped). They even sent a bouquet of flowers when my father died during the first project in 1999. They are easy to talk to and they listen to your ideas. If a suggestion I made wasn't wise, they explained why and how to achieve what I wanted in a safe and sound way. (I wish our architect, when we first built the house in 1976, had told me not to put in a glass ceiling set in wood beams or build a composition roof over the garage and then landscape over it. Artisan Design Build would have told me a better way to go in the first place, if they had been around then, and then I would have never needed them to fix up the bad design.) I have never had a single problem with Artisan. I did with many other contractors who tried to fix leaks before.

How they handled their contract (very vague and heavily weighted in their favor) compared to their verbal agreements with the outcome was very disappointing. Verbal agreements were not upheld, work now just over a year old is falling apart rapidly. The owner tries to impress the client with time up front and then never appears again. No reasonable discussions can be held as the owner becomes very hostile and blames everyone but himself. I now have granite cracking at the seams as not well supported, wood floors buckling, painting that is peeling, and a fireplace that was not built to code, etc. The most disappointing experience of my life and one that cost me greatly too. Please check out the Master's Builders Association for the reputation of your contractor prior to hiring and take the time to have an attorney review the contract. It is well worth the money upfront. My case did involve attorneys, but to no avail. The laws really do not protect the little guy.
