Visit two - Called him to light the fireplace, put a new igniter in and fix the noisy fan.
He lit the fireplace, said he could change the igniter but they last forever, and wasn't needed. Said it was just hard to light. Said to hit the top of the fireplace when the fan was noisy. Collected $92 and left. Had to unplug fan the next day as it wouldn't turn off and was noisy.
He also added a flange around the collar up underneath the chimney cap, at the top of the chase. Now the boxelder bugs don't have their big annual party down the inside of the chase into our dining room!
JP was on time and prepared. He took his time, made sure I understood everything and even suggested a way I could saveabout half the installation cost by placing the new wood stove in another location. Actually, I chose the more expensive route because I wanted the new stove to still be centrally located.
This was a very complicated installation, in that he was dealing with a manufactured home that had another, separate roof over the top of it. I wanted to have the stove kept in the central kitchen area, so he was working with the ceiling, the outer roof of the manufactured home, plus the complete roof over the top of that. JP wrote up estimates for everything. We agreed on what would be done and went forward.
They took care of securing the required permits and of picking up the new stove from the store.
The day of the installation, they arrived just a little ahead of time, had my new stove with them, and went to work. In short order they removed the old stove and placed it in the back of my truck, at my request. Removed the packing from the new stove - kept the mess cleaned up as they went - brought the new stove in and placed it on the pad.
JP thoroughly cleaned chimneys and serviced and cleaned my pellet stove. His associate worked on the installation of the wood stove. I mean, these guys were efficient! JP left mid-day to meet other commitments, but his associate stayed until after 6:00 pm to be sure everything that could be done, was done. They put a new chimney cap on, cut holes in the roofs and ceilings, connected the new chimney portion between the stove top and the ceiling, and, also, installed an air outlet. They had to drill through a marble pad to install the air outlet, which entailed crawling under the house (tight quarters).
Because of the additional hole that needed to be cut in the ceiling, JP custom made a metal plate which very, very nicely covered everything. It was necessary for him to come back at a later date for this portion of the job. But again - excellent communication - did everything he promised he would. Then he took the extra step of painting over each of the metal screws so the entire chimney was evenly painted black! His motto is definitely "do it right the first time!"
I gave his name to a friend of mine, who needed a chimney cleaned - same rave reviews. I will definitely call him the next time I need stove or chimney work done!
