Mediocre at best.. John came out on short notice to estimate and emailed me a price shortly after his visit. The price was fair, right in the middle of 3 bids, and he seemed most professional. John and I discussed I wanted 3" of compacted gravel below the driveway, and exposed aggregate, and a walk path to the back gate. I also requested they repair the gutter drain to the street. I also wanted a 12 x 42 patio across the back of the house, broom finish, again with the gravel or compacted sand, and removal of the drain line. I added a replacement of 1/2 of my approach, which had been broken out by tree roots. Part of his crew arrived promptly at 8, and began to survey what was to be done. The rest of the crew showed up between 8 and 10. They broke out the driveway very quickly and began forming. They formed the back patio, and I voice that I did not want my stairs cast into the concrete. (Which John and I spoke about) and I wanted the base as well. They told me two days to complete, which I thought was a fair timetable and looked forward to a quality project. The front driveway had a sand and gravel base installed, but only about 2". It looked good, so I let it go. There seemed to be only 3 or 4 on a crew of 10+ that were knowledgeable about the work. They poured my (24 x 22) driveway and placed 2 control joints in the 24' section. It looks like they dropped the float, and didn't fix it, as one section has about a 4' divot, which they just said "yeah, we'd just make it worse if we tried to fix it". While they were about to pour, I stated I wanted the siding cut so the concrete was against the foundation, and one of their guys walked up and just "snapped" it off, and it was never replaced. The walkway to the back - when I could walk to see it, i said that it was sloped back to the house! They stated they could cut additional grooves to help the water run away from the house, to which I said.."No, you will tear it out and replace it". They said they would come back the next day and fix the walk, and re-pour, to which I said..No you will wait to run concrete wheelbarrows until the curing is complete", they came out to pour 7 days later. They threw the broken out concrete into my backyard in a pile and left it for pickup another day, along with wheelbarrows of dirt in piles. The approach..wonderfully done to start, then they washed down the exposed aggregate, and left a runner of water running right over the approach, which left a full length mark right through the edging. It will get dirty quickly (I hope) and not be noticeable. The patio...no base, poured my steps right into the patio, poured over the existing patio slab and stair stoop from a previous stair (which I asked to remove). 1/2 the patio slopes away, 1/4 is flat, and 1/4 slopes toward the house. The crew that was on the back got concrete all over my house, my new windows and patio doors, screens, and cut the siding in a wonderful wave pattern. There was a tremendous amount of yelling and swearing at each other with the crew on the patio, and explaining about what needed to get done and how to do it from some individuals. They had to wheelbarrow the concrete, (John told me he would use a pump) and spilled concrete all over my yard, and left it for me to clean up. I have been involved in the construction of factories for 35 years, and understand the difficulties and needs to work to fit the needs of the field and project. So I have some relative competence in knowing what needs to get done. All this was completed in a 14 hour day - which is why I believe the quality of the product suffered greatly. Cleanup, or the lack of it, I have concrete all over my front yard, under japanese red leaf trees, and the entire front of the house had a concrete mess that was left. I estimate between 6-8 hours of cleanup, plus the 4 hours I had to do in the backyard. All from carelessness and hurry to get done. They finally came to get the concrete stubble they broke out, and actually backed across my back lawn and a brick patio (without requesting of they could) and only took 1/2 their mess. While John and a couple of his crew cares about what and how it gets done, his bringing a large inexperienced crew to my project only lent itself to a disappointing and lackluster quality finish.
