Dennis walked with us through the property, educated us on insects and diseases, and gave us valuable resources for additional information (about 2 hours of time). He also gave us a written report of his findings as a summary of the visit. The only disappointment was that he was unable to confidently identify the species of a couple of the less common trees we have. We are considering having our Japanese maple pruned and would call Dennis for that service as well.

Since I'm a gardener, I have some specialty shrubs and really appreciated his knowledge. I also felt my investment in his services was reassuring for my transplanting plans. I now know which plants to leave behind and which to focus on.
I might add that there is a beautiful large cedar tree between our house and the house behind us. Although owned by the park owner, it has always been of fascination to several tenants due to its size and slightly different appearance than a western red cedar (some tenants thought it was a "sick" tree).
Dennis was able to narrow down what most likely is its species and reassured us of its health BUT most importantly, he let us know that our neighbor is at risk of some of its branches despite the park owner hiring someone to come out to trim the branches. I will be forwarding his report to the park management/owner.
It certainly pays to have an expert on hand to assess your investment and risks! We will use him in the future when we get ready purchase land or move onto a new mobile home lot. He is a very pleasant person and professional.

Bill and his crew were on time and completed the job, including cleanup, as well as I could have expected. The company is very easy to work with. Tom, the Evergreen Arborist, visited for a no obligation estimate and was very knowledgeable and professional. We would definitely use this company again.

"Unfortunately this individual has confused my services with another company with a similar name. I do not remove trees and do not recommend wind sailing. There is no scientific proof that it makes trees more safe. Trees have existed for decades without being wind sailed."

Dennis Tompkins is a certified arborist, which was very important to me.  I enjoy gardening immensely and wanted my trees to be pruned correctly rather than chopped off like many of the trees in my neighborhood.  Dennis responded promptly, was able to come out quickly for a bid, and was able to schedule the work quickly, giving me a fairly good estimate of the time it would take. His prices are a bit high at $89/hr, but again, he's a certified arborist.  I had a flowering plum tree that wasn't looking so great and Dennis cleaned that up and even diagnosed some problems with it.  My bigger concern was a Japanese Pagoda tree that had many dead limbs that I couldn't reach. Dennis encouraged me to watch him prune it and direct him so it could be done to my satisfaction.  This tree was in a tricky area, surrounded by some decking, but Dennis did a good job with maneuvering his orchard ladder.  He was able to reach all but the highest limbs (and his ad does emphasize he prunes SMALL trees; this one was about 30'). The tree looks so much better now! He had a tarp to put all the clippings on and I assisted with this, as I have a lot of plantings around the tree that I didn't want damaged by the falling branches. We actually made a pretty good team together!  I really liked his collaborative approach and would certainly hire him again.

Looked like we had a sick tree in the front yard.    Dropping lots of sap and needles.    Dennis explained exactly what was wrong and how it occurred.    Explained why it was not other conditions and found a few other abnormalities that were subtle but not of concern.    Then offered to check on other trees.   Checked out 2 large cedars we have and gave information regarding other plants and maintenance.   Overall did not in any way try to create unnecessary business for himself - though it would have been very easy.   A fountain of knowledge - clearly understandable and practical.

As I returned home one Saturday, I say a man pruning an apple tree at my neighbor's house.  Since I moved to Washington from California there have been many yard skills that I had to acquire, and pruning tree,s other than oranges and peaches, was one of those skills.  I came back to where this man (Dennis Tompkins as I learned later) was working.  Since I had some basic knowledge, I wanted to evaluate his skills, the reasoning behind the cuts and his education.  I found that he was a Certified Arborist, who pruned with a thought to the form and function.  The apple tree was pruned, at the owner's request, to be espaliered along the house and fence.  For an ornamental tree, he pruned for disease and improved air flow.  Each cut was considered before the branch(large or small) was removed.  Did that take longer than a 'slash' pruning? Yes, but it was the way I liked to prune trees I understood.
Since I had two Weeping Japanese Maples that needed attention, I requested that he contact me to schedule an appointment.  He called me within a couple of days, was accommodating to my work schedule and the weather.  He arrived promptly on Saturday morning and we went to work.  I chose to work along side Dennis so I could learn for the future maintenance of my yard.  My neighbor chose to explain her needs and let him be.  He is a very informative person and willing to gracefully share his knowledge, without talking my ear off.
After we finished with the two front yard maples, we examined a sick cherry in the back yard.  This was a three way cherry planted by the previous home owner.  One of the 'added' branches had a lot of sap oozing during the last growing cycle.  Dennis explained that it was infected and with the open cankers probably would put a strain on the root system without ever recovering.  He also suggested that rather than trying to maintain the tree for fruit, that I consider it a gift to the birds and a nice accent to the yard. With that decision made the one branch was removed.  The structure of the tree is still good and it provides some screening from the house across the alley when the leaves come in.  He also explained that my prior attempts to prune the tree down in height had resulted in excess branching.  Now I will only remove branches that are crossing, crowding the center or poking me in the eye when I work under the tree.
I was very satisfied with Dennis' work and will employ his services if necessary in the future.  I also recommend him to all of my neighbors.

Dennis came to our home initially to give me an estimate on pruning several trees in our yard. He was friendly and professional impressing me with his understanding of tree and shrub growth and how pruning in the wrong place will produce unwanted results.  (I've read books and been to pruning seminars at Windmill Greenhouse and Watson's Greenhouse so I have some knowledge.)
His education and experience as an arborist are hard to find. He came the next week, on a sunny afternoon, and pruned the selected trees, cleaned up after himself and even took the time to show me how to prune a low-growing shrub making it and eventually all it's row-mates look just as nice. He is a very nice gentleman who I will call back next year and also recommend to anyone.

This was the first time we used Dennis, and we will certainly use him again.
I had read his articles about trees in the Enumclaw Courier-Herald over the years, and that is why I choose to call him. We recently purchased a home that we are remodeling, and the large landscape and gardens with many fruit trees had been neglected for many years, as well as damage from the ice storm a year ago.
Dennis pruned all of the fruit trees and many of the shrubs and trees in the landscaping, and they all look great now! He is very knowledgeable about trees and I was fascinated to listen to him talk. He obviously loves what he does, and it shows!

The guy came and gave me a professional estimate to remove some shrubs and a couple of trees. He assured me he would cut the trees to the ground and remove all debris. He told me that if it wasn't done properly or we felt something else needed to be done, he would come withing 48 hours and fix the problem for free. They charged for the estimate to secure the job. He was very professional and informative. He assured me they would remove the trees as close to the ground as he possibly could. I feel he gave me a fair estimate for the job that he will perform.

"Unfortunately, this excellent review does not pertain to my business. The individual's name is not in my business records and I do not perform the services he refers to. Hopefully Angie's representatives will work to have the review attributed to the appropriate business - likely another tree service with the name "EVERGREEN" in its title.."
