in our new construction house in 2011. Within two years the system was shutting
down each time there was a call for heat. The West Mechanical technicians made
multiple ?service calls? to attempt to fix the problem, each time assuring us
that they had found the cause and fixed it. Finally, they had a manufacturer?s
representative come out. He quickly determined that there was a faulty sensor,
something, it seems, that West Mechanical?s technicians should have been able
to figure out. When that was replaced (three weeks later!) the system appeared
to be working fine. At that point they
declared our system was out of warranty and recommended a routine maintenance plan to cover service
charges.
Within a year we noticed
that one of the loops of the radiant heat system was never getting warm,
approximately one third of the house. We requested that West Mechanical address the problem during
the routine maintenance call. The
service technician arrived 3 hours after the appointment time, with no call to
let us know he was running late, and no apology for being late. He ?determined?
that one of the pumps in the heat pump was going bad. When I pointed out that
that made no sense; that it would not account for a single loop failing, he
went with me to check the valves to the individual loops. There he determined
that one of the loops was not showing any temperature drop between inflow and
outflow. He ?determined? that the actuator was faulty. He left the actuator
off, saying that the loop would get warm whenever any of the loops called for
heat. He said he would replace them all, but didn?t have them with him and
would need to make another trip. He WAS able to, and insisted on, charging my
credit card right then for the ?service call? and the ?diagnostic.? After he
left, I determined that the loop was still not heating, contrary to his
assurances. I called Brent DePauw, President of West Mechanical, and told him
that I would expect the problem would be
fixed on the next trip out; that I was not going to continue to pay to make
multiple trips out as they had on the previous problem. He assured me that they
would ?figure out what the problem was? and would call me to set up a time to
come out the next week. I never heard from him again.
Yesterday I had a new HVAC professional come out to
investigate the problem. He determined, within a few minutes, that the valve to
that loop had been closed. He opened it and the heat now works fine.
Brent?s business card reads, ? The bitterness of poor
quality lingers long after the sweetness of low prices forgotten.? I would say
that the bitterness of poor work at an exorbitant price persists indefinitely.
One hopes that they are merely incompetent and not as dishonest as they appear.
It seems that the only technology they have mastered is credit card swiping.
It was a holiday - the day after Thanksgiving. We were happy to be connected with a service repair person the same day. The repair was quick - under 30 minutes. All good, except when the bill came and it was almost $450. Now, we were fully prepared to pay Holiday rates so there was a $130 labor charge. That's where the magic died however, when we were charged more than $300 for a $25 part.
I reached out to the business and did not receive a reply until about a week later when I was contacted by their book keeping person. Apparently they hadn't recorded my credit card properly. I thought they were contacting me regarding my inquiry, but they'd had no idea. The book keeper told me they'd contact the owner regarding the price issue. I said if we could take care of the issue, we'd be all set and close the transaction. I received no follow up except when I received a statement for the full amount a week later. Total disconnect by the back office.
Upon being charged I immediately contacted West Mechanical again and was connected with the owner. I related the issue and told him I had no problem with the labor portion since it was a holiday weekend, but that I felt a 1000% mark up was excessive. He explained to me that the part is billed with labor included and since it was a holiday weekend, there would be a higher price.
Ultimately he agreed to charge me about $70 less and claimed I'd been told that this was the rate and had accepted that rate when I paid. Thank you West Mechanical for teaching me a lesson about how to fluff up a bill.
Next time...no there won't be a next time.
