At the end of September I had been unable to find a roofer willing to come out for a repair job in the busy season. All Comp owner Chris answers his cell and was able to set up a time to come look at the problem right away, he communicated well and encouraged me to look into getting the roof problem fixed for free by the roofer hired by the previous owners (turned out not to be an option). So Chris and co. came to do the roof repair, gutter cleaning and replacement gutters/downspouts about a week later. They arrived half an hour early. This was the first I knew about him using subcontractors, though. The gutter cleaners came and went in an hour or two. Chris did the roof work himself, and did a good job. He had recognized the defunct color and manufacturer of my shingles on sight, and found an almost perfect color-match in another brand. Ryan, replacing the gutters, seemed competent but a little careless and rough. He consulted with me about whether to pitch the gutters toward the downspout to compensate for the reverse pitch of the porch or add new downspouts, and went with my decision. When Chris finished the roof, he stayed around casually to supervise his brother and spot his ladder. Ryan and Chris worked fast, and would have attached some the downspouts crookedly if I hadn't been there and asked them to fix them so they ran down the center of the corner boards and window frames before they attached them to the house. I paid Chris, and he left. He had been there about 6 hours start to finish. Chris sent me a paid invoice and a pleasant form letter saying that their workmanship was warrantied for a year and that they valued our input if there was anything we needed to bring to their attention. The problem came when it rained and I learned that Ryan's rough jamming when he installed the downspouts had opened 3 big leaks in the old gutters, which had been sound until then. Also, the gutter that needed rebalancing was still overflowing in the same place, pouring huge amounts of water down into the ground by the foundation. Chris was really evasive about getting someone to come out to fix this. First he said Ryan would get in touch and come the following week, and Ryan didn't. This happened again more than once. In the end it took 3+ weeks of persistent calling before Ryan finally came. He found crushed and rusted leaf-guards that were jammed into the entrances to the down spouts. He removed these and said it should stop the problems. I asked him to caulk the leaks anyway. He had one replacement leaf guard in his truck, for which I paid him $5. I'll have to purchase and install the other missing leaf guards myself. Removing and replacing the crushed, clogged leaf guards that were plugging the downspouts should have been part of the original gutter cleaning service. Ryan used only left-bend downspout elbows. Where he used these for a right bend, the seam side shows on top instead of being hidden against the house.
