Mehl Homes did a complete main bath re-model for me. I am so happy with the work that was done. Everyone in the crew was helpful and kept me in the loop on how the project was progressing. They went the extra mile to make sure the dust and debris was kept to a minimum by putting plastic down on the floor in all of the areas they worked, and cleaned up at the end of everyday. The bathroom looks beautiful, I would definitely would use them again for any re-modeling work.
Ethan promptly came out to give me a bid on updating and renovating my kitchen. He had some great suggestions about things that I had not even thought of, and truly listened to me regarding what I wanted done. He took a lot of measurements, and then sent me drawings of what the finished kitchen would look like along with a reasonable bid, and I accepted it. He came to the house to bring me samples of cabinet styles and colors, and referred me to a flooring and counter company, as well as a faucet company where I picked out what I wanted. All of the supply companies he uses provide high quality custom products. Ethan worked with me on some changes I wanted to make to the original plan, and discussed and advised me of the cost before the changes were made. He wanted it to be as wonderful as I did, so he took the extra time to bring many samples for me to choose from, base boards, molding, transition strips, light and outlet covers, little things that he could have just chosen himself, but he wanted to be sure everything was done correctly the first time. (And it was!)
Custom made cabinets were ordered and when they came in, the work commenced. The first day was demo day, and everything in the kitchen was removed, right down to the tile floor. Painters and flooring guys came next, then cabinets and tile, counters and sink and appliances were reinstalled. Every one of the guys who worked on the kitchen (demo crew, painters, flooring, tile, electrical, plumbing, etc) were professional and everyone did fantastic work. Especially the clean up they did every day before they left. Ethan kept me informed daily as to who was coming to work on the kitchen, and did a lot of the work himself. He was there on the job most of the time, or stopped by to make sure the work being done was up to his high standards. Start to finish, (other than waiting for the custom cabinets to be made) the job took 9 days! Started on a Monday, worked that first week only 4 days due to a family commitment I had on Friday, and worked the next Tuesday through Friday, with a last inspection by Ethan that next week. Anything I had a question about, or any problem, he was very responsive and took steps to correct and adjust the work. The couple of things I didn't like were taken care of right away.
I honestly could not have asked for a better contractor for my remodel job. Having never remodeled anything, I was afraid I would make mistakes I would not be happy with, but Ethan made everything simple and made sure I knew what was going on. I love my new kitchen, it is better than I could have imagined. Thank you, Ethan and Mehl Homes.
For $99, the business did the same amount of work that I have received for free from 3 other remodeling contractors, basic wireframe layouts after a free visit to the house. The company we ultimately selected then provided in-depth computer designs with appliance and cabinet specific maps.
I felt like this business was in hurry and had a lot of work and wasn't really interested in creating a solution and moving forward with my kitchen remodel. Technically, it was a waste of $99 for me and would have preferred to use that money elsewhere. Maybe others found the service useful and led to a remodel? I would be interested to hear.
I would not recommend purchasing the 99.00 bathroom design.
Overall, I am happy with the end result, but the following issues result in a B rating: subs who did the drywall did not sand the walls smooth so I had to finish prepping the walls to paint and there are still pits, edges, and dimples. This would not have been a problem if I wanted the walls textured. The subs who added siding said it would be done in such a way no one could tell the siding was replaced - the reality is that the edges where the old and reclaimed new siding join are detectable. It may not be so noticeable once painted. The subs who framed kept parking on my septic drain field despite my request to not park on the field as that can cause septic failure. The job took three months. Steve didn't let me know which days someone was going to be at my house or not. Many days I came home to find something not done quite right - the roof on the front porch addition not lining up with the existing roof, poor caulking on the new windows, replacement siding that was a different thickness than the existing siding, poorly sanded hand rail with non matching stain. I would call Steve and it would eventually get improved, although not always to my complete satisfaction. I thought for $36,000 that Steve would be checking the quality of the work by the subs before indicating they were done.
The reasons that I would recommend Steve Mehl - he knows what he is doing. He did the work promised, and I am confident that it was done right and it turned out very well (other than minor cosmetic issues with the siding not lining up snd the stair hand rail stain not matching at the upper turn of the rail). He added a few extra items after discussing what I wanted, gave me good advice when I asked for his opinion, and was always very responsive even when I was complaining about the work.
I did pay the amount due on the contract because it seemed that Steve had done the best that he could, given that I chose to use reclaimed siding, to complete the work to my satisfaction. I plan to refinish the hand rail myself and try to adjust the siding so that it is flush.
The final quality of the work was top-notch. Our goal was to raise the Den/Office to the same level as the rest of the house and Ethan was able to do this and make it look as if it had always been that way. The match on new solid oak floor to the rest of the house was perfect. There were only two flaws in the final result that varied from our original plan: The heating vents for the new room needed to be run above (due to floor height) and the due to prior remodels the ceiling ended up a little bit lower in the new room than in the rest of the house.
Ethan was very flexible and willing to make minor adjustments to our original plan and added in a number of extras without increasing final cost, including (for example) solid wood doors, some minor water heater plumbing, multiple colors of paint when the estimate had been for a single color, and some attic vents that were city-required at final inspection.
Another example was that he was quite open to us contracting out the purchase and installation of new windows for the rooms to a third party ourselves. He and his subs were able to work with the other company and when the time came, the windows went in flawlessly.
There were a couple items that did end up costing us a little extra.
- Ethan's electrician found that our ancient house wiring was largely original (1958) and the breaker box was a mess and let us know. Again Ethan was willing to work with this and arrange schedules and work to accommodate us getting some of that fixed separately.
- We were also unable to find a laminate floor style (for the utility room) from his supplier that we liked, so we purchased that ourselves and he was able to re-credit the difference in cost to us.
I also would like to mention that the subs Mehl Homes used on our project are good, dependable experienced local people who do excellent work.
Again, I do not hesitate to recommend Mehl Homes for remodeling.
Our remodel has been showcased to various relatives and neighbors and all are highly complimentary of the work done.
We've had numerous occasions to work with Mehl Homes. over the years, and are very pleased to recommend them.
One of the most telling things about Mehl homes is that you can talk to anyone who owns a home they have built and they will be more than happy to sing their praises and are proud to show off their home. We have been in our home over 5 years and we would not hesitate to recommend Mehl Homes to anyone who wants anything from a remodeling project to building a new home. They are not the cheapest or the fastest, but you get what you pay for. The peace of mind knowing that Mehl Homes will be there from beginning to end and then some is priceless. You will be happy with your project and if there is a problem, Mehl Homes will stand behind their work. Just ask any of their customers.
