It began with a search for a window specialist for our garden window in the kitchen. By garden window, I mean one with glass above as well as in front of you. We were replacing a similar window that had 4 aluminum panels. This time, we wanted a single pane of glass in front of us and another pane for the roof. We had trouble finding someone who would even consider doing a garden window. And with just one pane for more than a 4 foot spread, we were told it couldn't be done. Out of desperation, we contacted Lindal Windows. They referred us to Chuck, saying he had built sun rooms for them for ~30 years. Chuck's wife and business partner came out to see the window. She suggested 3 panes and gave us a rough estimate. And then she sent Chuck. He heard what we wanted to do and with a little persuasion, started getting creative. He spoke with the Lindal engineers and came up with a structurally sound way to do what we wanted. The result, a stunning, cedar framed garden window in our kitchen that brings the outside in. Beyond the willingness to do what everyone else said was impossible, Chuck had to co-ordinate with the tight time frame of our kitchen remodel contractor. They gave him two days to get the window in. He came through, meeting the schedule without a hitch. Our only quibble with Chuck is one we have found with almost all the small businesses we worked with: returning phone calls is not a strength. But that said, all commitments, on this and on two subsequent jobs were met. Following the success of the kitchen window, when we decided to replace the glass in all of our ~60 wood-framed windows, of course we contacted Chuck. We also talked with two much larger outfits. We looked at three bids. Chuck's bid was about 25% higher and we still chose to work with him. We glad we did! He came out and did a measure. More, when we looked at the windows, he saw some indicators that gave him the impression that the windows could be fitted more precisely. So he came out a second time, removed the stops and sure enough, found that a few of the original windows were smaller than necessary. Because he was so meticulous, all windows were accurately measured the first time. He was also able to use most of the original stops. The install was fast and smooth, with a small family crew. And he subcontracted a painter to paint all of the outside window frames. As a side note, we liked the painter so much that we hired him to paint the inside of our house. A few windows arrived cracked from the manufacturer. Chuck worked with Lindal to get replacements in record time. The last of the windows were installed about a week later. Chuck handled all the scheduling. During the install of the laundry room windows, Chuck put a dent in the top of the washer. What impressed us is that he didn't try to hide it -- something that would have been easy to do because we had painters and carpenters in the house at the same time. He let us know about the dent and told us that he would cover the cost of repair. We appreciated his integrity. The last job Chuck did for us was the simplest: one of the new windows was broken when a new front door was installed. Chuck had the measurements, ordered the window, and installed it. No muss, no fuss. If you have glass work to do, we can't say enough about the quality of Chuck's work. Thirty+ years in the business shows!
