These guys did great work. We chose to replace deck with Trex decking and added stairs. They did a fantastic job with tear down and removal of old deck, pouring new footings and landing, installation of new deck and final cleanup. We love the framing of the deck and stairs, really looks sharp. They were great about returning to address a couple of concerns we had. The entire project was done very professionally. I’d like to clarify that the 4 star on punctuality was really no fault of Bluegrass Contruction. Supply chain issues set the project back a bit, compounded by a significant snow storm and the holidays. I would and will go with Bluegrass for any future projects within their area of expertise. Highly recommend!

This is an update to a previous review posted in March, 2021. During a relatively common wind storm in October, 2021, a large section of my fence was blown down. The fence had been in place less than seven months at that point. Surrounding fences of the same type outlasted the same windstorm, but mine, significantly longer, fell down. Jessica Simms, the presumptive owner, was quite pleasant while I was buying the fence, and was also quite accommodating for the first two months after the fence fell down. She offered to do partial repairs on the fence and to stabilize it free of charge. However, she admitted that these would not be permanent fixes, and that the cost of labor prohibited her from making a permanent fix to the fence (build on a south facing slope on an island in Western Washington), and that a permanent fix would require additional payment. In total, I paid more than $20,000.00 for the fence, and am now facing the likelihood of significantly more investment in a project that should have been done correctly from the start. Unfortunately, the conversation that precipitate this addition to a previously extremely positive review did not go well. In a text message, after having been told that when last weeks snow cover passed, additional fixes to the fence would be made, I messaged Ms. Simms, stating that the snow was clear and that I would be home on certain days of the coming week if her workers would be available to work on repairs to this fence. My text message, sent on on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at 3:57 PM, verbatim, was "My ground is clear of snow now so whenever they can me it out her would be great with me." Receiving no response in the interim, I messaged on Tuesday, January 11, at 8:07 PM, verbatim, read "I'll be home Friday and Monday if either of those work..." Ms. Simms responded tersely, that "I've got your project on a schedule and I'll get it scheduled as soon as I have availability. The fence was build well and according to your wishes but an unusual natural event knocked it down. As I understand it it is currently standing to allow your dogs to be outside (even though I'm sure it's not as aesthetically appealing as it once was) and we will not be able to get to it until we have a break in our schedule. If this was a quality of construction or faulty material issue I could understand you expecting it right away, that said as I referred to about e the fence was build per your request to the highest quality standards. I will keep you updated." I next quoted a previous message Ms. Simms sent me which read, "I feel badly that my old sales guy from Lynnwood sold you a fence on a hill facing South on Camano that was solid panel but I just can't afford to send 3 guys out there for a week to do it on the house." Ms. Simms then responded, "That's not to say it's out fault. He just didn't know the area. He build what you asked for." I responded of course that I asked for a fence that was, by implication, standing upright and served the purpose that a wooden fence is generally understood to serve. Ms. Simms responded, "If you'd like to take me to small claims feel free. At this point I'm certain I'll prevail. Glad to help out but it's not at the top of our priority list." I responded "I'm simply asking for it to be fixed after I went to people I thought were professionals and spent more than 20,000 dollars on something that fell down in the first wind event of the season. The was not unusual for this area. I simply state that my area is no wfree. You don't need to get angry about it. I didn't mention litigation. Clearly since you're not receiving money for this it's not at the top of your priority list." Ms. Simms responded: "I will schedule the fix and let you know when to expect us." I responded: "Thani you. Should I expect you prior to April?" Ms. Simms responded: It'll be in February. I'll give you firm dates by end of week." I responded: "Thank you." All of this just to say that this company does not employ people with the best knowledge of the area. They do not build fences that stand up to the elements. They do not stand behind their product. And they do not prioritize customer satisfaction. The fence they build looked good, until some wind hit it... then it fell over and the owner of the company got testy and angry, suggesting I should simply take her to small claims court when that idea had never entered my mind. I wanted a fence that justified the exorbitant price paid (more than $20,000) and I did not get that. Buyer beware. I would recommend looking elsewhere or even looking up instructions to building your own fence or deck project on Youtube and do it yourself. You won't get the backtalk that I got from the owner of this company. UPDATED AS OF 01/15/2022--------------------------- This is a second follow up to two previous reviews of this company. I have never reviewed a company negatively before and certainly not twice in three days. However, not only did the owner send me personal text messages threatening to sue me for defamation if I did not retract a review containing his own words, verbatim, as well as screenshots of his rude and condescending text messages, but he also now refuses to perform repair work on the fence that he installed and that subsequently blew over in the first windstorm of the season that he agreed to conduct more than two months ago. The fence looked great when it was put up, but the owner was unfamiliar with what types of fencing should be installed on an island in Western Washington, and I am not from Florida, so I relied on his "expert" advice when deciding on a fence type. It did not stand up to the first windy weather of the fall season (which is quite common in Western Washington), and it blew over. This has left me with a jagged and shoddy partial repair job intended to be very temporary that is only supported by eight or so foot boards jutting into my neighbors' driveway. All of the fence sections are held together by small planks nailed to the tops. I am now left seeking some legal relief and have to file a homeowners insurance claim on a fence that is less than a year old. If you want work that looks nice but isn't made to the standard this region demands, and want to take a chance that, if something goes wrong, the owner will string you along for months, promising to repair it, then get mad when you ask for the twentieth time when you can expect him to show up, tell you to sue him and then threaten to sue you for defamation when you simply provide pictures of his own text messages, then look no further. Bluegrass Construction, and its owner, Anthony Curtis, are the ones for you. If you want something better and probably less expensive, take an extra few days and look somewhere else.
Response from Bluegrass Construction and Decks
"My name is Anthony Curtis. I own Bluegrass Construction and I am the one who has been communicating with Customer (not Jessica Sims). On November 15th 2021 a major storm event hit Whidbey Island (Including Camano Island), severely damaged property, and knocked out power to thousands (also tipped over a semi-truck on Deception Pass). See linked article. [Link Removed] It was a MAJOR storm that required the County to declare a state of emergency. It was not a "relatively common" wind storm. The texts attached by Customer do not accurately represent the totality of the conversations he and I had regarding repair. I am not interested in attaching the entire thread because I do not believe it is helpful in coming to a resolution in this matter. I will say that the fence has been raised and temporarily secured so that his animals can safely use his backyard without any fear of them leaving the property and getting lost. It was always our intention to come and walk alongside the Customer to come to a mutually agreeable solution when our schedule permitted. Unfortunately we are not able to drop other commitments and rush out to implement the permanent fix as we are mid stream on many other projects at this time and that wouldn't be fair to the customers we are currently working with. That is why we did a temporary mitigation approach to be followed by a future scheduled repair. We are disappointed in the approach taken to reach resolution in the matter and will not comment on the matter further publicly."

Highly recommend! The project was done on time & on budget. Bluegrass's ethics and standards were evident all the way from Justin's estimate (the most detailed I’ve ever seen – it included ALL the details spoken about in the initial visit!) all the way through completion and reflected their attention to detail and respect for us as individuals and made us feel that we were important to their business. It was a pleasure to partner with them! We appreciate Aaron's details with the laying of the boards on our deck and the care he took with our wrap-around stair -- especially when we all unexpectedly discovered that one end of our yard was a few inches higher than the other! They had to do some unexpected digging on that end to get the stair in properly, but they did it and it looks great. On a second (smaller) project, Allen's skill with our short paver paths has erased the ugliness of the previous bad job that we wasted our money on a year ago with someone else. Oh! To be able to walk on them without wobbling or catching our shoes or feeling scratchy sand all over the place. They're no longer a hazard.... they’re the beautiful accent we intended them to be. Jessica kept us well informed about the ‘business’ aspects of our project. We appreciated the ‘staged’ payment option presented in the initial proposal – defined payments by the stage of work completed, with the final payment coming only after she confirmed that the work was done to our satisfaction. “Our” crew (my apologies, Bluegrass, I don’t remember their names) were always on time, cheerful, and very hard-working! We are super-satisfied customers & will gladly recommend Bluegrass to anyone! We've unfortunately had some bad experiences with contractors before, so we recognize professionalism & quality workmanship when we see it and appreciate being able to trust the job is done well and our hard-earned money is well spent. After the two jobs Bluegrass did for us, the only regret is that we don't have any other projects to hire them for...but if some turn up, there's no doubt who we'll be calling!

Overall it was good. My wife appreciated the cleanup each day after work was done. We were plagued by delays due to permitting issues with the city though which in turn led to some issues with the wood being exposed untreated for extended period of time. Quality was mostly good, there are a few issues Ill have to redo/fix, but nothing major. Overall, we are pleased with the outcome of the project and have referred Bluegrass to others we know seeking like work.

The Bluegrass Construction team did a great job with my fence project. It was a bit complicated at the start as I was installing a horizontal, mid-century style fence to replace 250+ linear feet of older vertical picket fencing. Some upfront engineering/design work was necessary to figure out how to manage the transition and step-down of the fence panels with the various changes in grades of the yard - but after working with the team the first few days to figure out pattern and style, the fencing went up very quickly and came out looking great. The team was really flexible to accommodate what we were trying to accomplish and checked in often to make sure everything was in step with the overall plan. As we ran into some grading challenges, the team helped figure out the logical path forward at minimal change order expense. They also helped coordinate with five neighbors involved with the project. Can't recommend the team highly enough and I will plan to reach out to Bluegrass with my next phase of fencing work in the new year. Thanks again for the hard work and professionalism of the Bluegrass Team. You did a great job for sure!

The team was GREAT. I got an immediate response on my inquiry, and Justin came out to give me a quote within a week. The actual installation was quick (two days) and the fence looks beautiful. Justin was a fantastic communicator and explained all my options on the fence build and when little issues arose, he gave clear explanations and ideas for solutions. Overall, I had a great experience and my fence turned out exactly how I'd imagined it.

The Bluegrass team did a great job from quote to completion. They were prompt on the quote, walked the work with me, and even revised the quote multiple times when my neighbours wanted more parts of their fences improved. We were able to align quickly on the fence style and other details when questions were brought up from either me or the work team. The company was really easy to do business with all the way through the project. Would definitely hire again!

From start to finish, Jessica and Jason were great to work with. They communicated timelines and helped set expectations about the work and costs. They helped us with our many revisions and delays as we worked through exactly what we wanted. When the time came to do the job, they were on-time each day and very professional in their approach. Jason talked us through each of the challenges our site presented during the actual build and worked with us to find ways to solve them. We recommend Bluegrass Construction and will call them again for future fence or deck needs.

First off, we called quite a few places and Bluegrass was the only company to return our call within a couple of days. They promptly setup a estimate and Justin was out there on time, prepared and had all the knowledge we needed for questions. The company promptly sent us the estimate and we paid the first part of the job. The company setup a project date and we paid the first half with ease. The company then came out early due to a cancellation and finished the job in 2 days (with only 2 people). They also fixed our gate which was not required for the job. I highly recommend this company and will be using them in the future!

We are so glad that we chose Bluegrass Construction for our second story deck replacement. Everyone we dealt with was professional and courteous. They arrived when they said they would and cleaned up everything at the end of each day. They are very good at communication and worked with our schedule. Some changes had to be made to the deck to correct mistakes of the original builder. Bluegrass staff explained what they saw needed to happen and the reason for it. They also uncovered issues affecting our siding that we are going to have them come back and address in the spring. We were so impressed with them even before they started our project that we contracted them to rebuild my mother’s cedar deck. It turned out beautiful and is much better constructed than the original. The front porch railings also added to the appearance of our home and made it easier for older family members to climb the rounded flagstone step. I with we had done this several years earlier.

After reaching out to several companies for a plan and quote on a custom deck and fence install for our house, it was almost immediately clear that Bluegrass stood out among the rest - frequent and convenient communication from the office (call, text, email - whatever works for you). Project managers were available to be on-site for questions and adjustments leading up to the work being done. With other contractors, I often feel like once you say "yes" and pay the deposit, they forget about you until the work starts -- not the case here. The quote itself was on the higher end, but not by much -- and judging by the prior work photos, it seemed worth it. "Worth it" was an understatement -- the deck and fence turned out absolutely beautiful. It's better than I planned or hoped. You can tell these teams know what they're doing and truly care about the work, often suggesting things along the way to improve the final product. I couldn't be happier with the result, and I strongly recommend this company -- I know I'll place them at the top of my list for future projects.
