KINHAVEN MUSIC SCHOOL

The Kinhaven experience is unique in that the school maintains a steadfastly non-competitive atmosphere. Yes, everyone is aware of who the most proficient players are, but strong players are seeded throughout the sections, and in larger sections such as violin players will rotate through sections. The faculty puts serious, thoughtful effort into ensemble placement and repertoire. On the minus side, Kinhaven is expensive for a summer music program. A few new buildings have been constructed in recent years, but the dorm cabins are generally in egregious repair; the larger buildings could use a fair amount of work. The food is prepared on location and is generally thought to be excellent, although on the "hippie" side of healthy. Unlike some music programs, repertoire is not announced in advance, so there is no requirement to arrive with music prepared. I would recommend the Junior session highly for kids of any talent level; for the older session, serious string players should probably skip this program, but advanced players not planning to major in music would likely have a very enjoyable and educational summer. Admission for older wind players is competitive, and the program is probably suitable for a pre-conservatory player.
