Yes. Excessive pitch in gutters can cause water to flow too rapidly, leading to a decrease in the gutter's water-holding capacity; consequently, during heavy rainstorms, water may awkwardly splash outside the gutters. If you’re not interested in digging up your yard, but you still need to direct water away from your house, another option is to extend your downspouts further out into the yard. Two methods to do this are:

  • Adding a splashguard. This is the simplest method. You can purchase a splashguard at your local hardware store and place it under your downspout. This will act as a funnel to direct water away from your house.

  • Add downspout extension at the end. You can also add an additional downspout to the end of the “elbow” as a way to extend the water further out into your yard. Some hardware stores sell downspouts with a flexible extension that you can maneuver around your yard.

The above alternatives are great options if your gutters are above a slab foundation that you wouldn’t want to dig up. One downside to these methods is if your yard slopes back upwards to your home, then the water won’t actually flow away. In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.

Gutter guards do not cause ice dams, but they can make it more difficult for melting snow to drain by blocking smaller chunks of ice that might otherwise drain away in uncovered gutters. If you find ice dams forming on top of your gutter guards, you may want to remove them for the winter to aid in faster drainage.

Icicles can form if your gutters are clogged, but that’s not always the issue. You could also have an ice dam on your roof from poor insulation inside. In that case, the melting snow can refreeze in the gutter even if there isn’t a clog. If you’re unsure of the underlying problem, call in a roofing company to assess the issue and implement a permanent solution for you.

It’s recommended that you clean your gutters after a severe storm, however, regular storms don’t raise the same concerns. Look for signs your gutter might need cleaning after a harsh storm. Do you see broken branches and excessive leaves all over your yard? Chances are your gutters caught quite some debris. Also, ensure a few drying days before cleaning your gutters. Dry debris is much easier to clean.
