Alterations/Sewing/Decorating
The class instructor for this quilting class was great! She made it all seem so logical and simple. Class time was a delight. The fabric selection at this shop is moderate. I've certainly seen much greater selection within color schemes. The price for a fat quarter of fabric can be quite high. The shop owner says that her fabric is "first rate" rather than something less and that seems to be justification for the pricing.
The issue came about when my quilt top was complete, backing selected and paid for, and the shop owner said she would machine quilt it for me. The quilt was supposed to be done in a week but was not. On an earlier visit I had waited about 45 minutes for the shop owner to shop up for a scheduled appointment. Punctuality is not good. Prompting from the class instructor evidently got things done and the machine quilting task was completed a couple of days later. Prior to this, and in our final class the shop owner was present and I asked what color thread my quilt top should be done in? In front of everyone else in the class she said "obviously a nice variegated pink." The quilt top was done in shades of pink and apple green, with yellows and some medium blues and floral purples. I agreed that pink thread for the machine quilting was correct since the major color in the quilt top was pink and the backing was a pale apple green. I was horrified, after picking up the quilted piece and taking it home to find she had used thread for the machine quilting which was nearly BLACK! It was a dark variegated thread of navy blue, olive green and dark purple. It looked terrible! It ruined the quilt top colors and the back looked like it had been scribbled on by a 3-year old with a black marker.
I returned the quilt to her with a note explaining this wouldn't do. To date (2 weeks later) she hasn't even called to apologize, much less to offer any kind of refund or "fix" for this problem. All total, including class fees and fabric I have $200 invested in this project and it's a loss.
If you go to Sew Many Treasures you will find a quiet, congenial group of women who work there and a bubbly shop owner. If you decide to have any work done by the shop owner, make very certain you have everything written down and you ask what the policy is if mistakes are made. Go over everything 2 or 3 times to make sure she understands your wishes. She does alterations and other things, too. I'd just hate to have some other person lose their items to a service provider who just doesn't care what the end looks like.
