When he arrived he introduced himself and made chit chat while I led him downstairs to the utility room. I described to him the problems the furnace was having. He went to work after some cursory investigation and pointed out to me that there is a fault code (blinking LED) through a sight glass at the bottom of the furnace front access panel. Good to know.
I left him to disassemble everything in peace so I didn't hover. He took apart the combustion chamber in about 20 mins (tight clearances and he didn't have the exact tools necessary, seemingly). He let me know the problems (dirty burners, a cracking ceramic igniter element) and what he could do to fix them. I opted to replace all the parts and he recommended that I replace the flame sensor too. OK.
He called the office/shop and they had all the parts needed on hand there. Excellent. He left and I stuck around to wait for his return.
This is where the only part of the service call that I had a slight problem with comes in to the picture.
Since it was around noon he took his lunch while on his parts run to Chuck's shop. He didn't disclose that to me before leaving. I commute to Colchester. From my house in Grand Isle to their shop is a half hour trip. I had expected for him to be back at most 1 hour and 30 mins later. He was gone for about 2 hours and 10 minutes and returned around 1:15 PM.
It's a small complaint and take it with a grain of salt since I do live an hour round trip from their central location. I would have liked a heads up that he would most likely stop and eat lunch or a call while he's gone to let me know he would be a little later.
I work in the service industry in a job that requires me to be on a customers property. I wouldn't feel comfortable taking lunch on a clients time if they were waiting on me to do something- especially if it's a malfunctioning furnace in colder weather.
With that said, he was quick to install the new components and reassemble the furnace. He tested it and it functioned correctly. While he was still in the utility room he informed me of any other things that he noticed and investigated: rust stains; water spots; unplugged humidifier. But he did not find any other major problems.
Overall though, it was great service. Caleb was very knowledgeable, very professional and a nice guy to boot. The work was performed quickly correctly and I haven't had any further issues since the service was performed.
I compared features and efficiency of the furnce brands commonly installed in our area and manufacturer's product reliability ratings on Consumer Reports. I got 2 solid estimates for each brand that all came similar to my neighbors' from this past summer. On the high end units, I love the variable capacity gas valve. I also appreciate the efficiency and quiet during lower-demand cycles.
Even before we received their quote, the Chuck's salesman was the one who offered up electric heaters to keep the house warm until we got a new one installed. They were also the local distributor for the Lennox brand we selected. They have a solid reputation for good value (but not cheap). And they took total care of 2 rebate submissions, and told us how to initiate a 3rd.
Thankfully, availability was just 1 day, and had our new furnace installed at working on Dec 7th. The installer cleaned up almost everything really well, but missed the area where the new vents were drilled thru the sill plate. They immediately came back to remedy that.
The furnace has been great so far (6 weeks), and the past few days of -bitter cold (-10 to -20 degreesF hasn't overwhelmed it.
We are delighted with the Lennox furnace, and with Chuck's..
We discussed my problem (AC freezing-up an becoming in-effective) and looked at various components of the system for about 20 minutes. We agreed that it was best to have a technician do a service call ($150) to dig in and access my situation further.
Their technician arrived as scheduled within a few days. After various measurements and discussion of repair versus replacement, I opted to replace my furnace and AC system. The technician said he would alert the salesman to followup with me me and provide a quote.
After about a week, I called the salesman and told him that I talked with the technician and we agreed on a new system and that I needed a quote. He mentioned at that time that it wouled be about three-weeks; I joked and quot;for the quote?!and quot;, he said and quot;noand quot;, and quot;for a work crew to do the installationand quot;, they were pretty busy at this time of season (July).
Another 10 days went by and I had to call the salesman and request via voice-mail that he get a quote to me. Within a few days, I received an email quote. The email said and quot; Please let me know if you have any questionsand quot;. I did reply to the email with several questions.
Never heard back from the company until I received the invoice for the technician. Paid my bill and moved on to another contractor.
I definitely got the impression that they were just too busy to handle the job. If they would have answered my questions in a timely fashion, I would have gone ahead with 10 thousand dollars worth of work. They started off very responsive, seemed knowledgeable but just couldn't follow through.
