Bahia grass is not difficult to grow, but you might need patience for this slow-growing grass. Whereas some grass species, like Bermuda grass, can take 1 to 2 weeks to germinate, Bahia grass can take two or three times as long, making it seem like it won’t grow. Water the lawn thoroughly, apply fertilizer, and overseed if necessary to promote healthy growth.

The first step is killing any current nutgrass plants, either through application of herbicides or sugar, by digging up the plants and rhizomes, or by using soil solarization. To discourage new nutgrass plants from forming, ensure proper landscape drainage and bring shade into areas of the lawn that are consistently damp.

Mulching leaves has many more lawn benefits than picking them up and removing them entirely. Leaf mulch supports healthy soil and grass growth, plus it fertilizes your lawn as the leaves decompose. That way, you can save time (and your back) from picking up every leaf in your yard, too.

There are plenty of products to help green up your grass. Try an iron supplement spray or fertilizer that is rich in nitrogen. You can also apply a thin layer of compost on top of your lawn at the beginning of spring to give the grass a nutrition boost, which helps it achieve that bright color you are looking for.
