I couldn't be more pleased with Ed's work.  He's an old-school guy, nearly 40 years of experience, and it shows in his business practice and his craft.
First of all: old school business.  Ed doesn't have a cell phone or email.  He has an answering service take messages and he returns them in the evening.  He returned my message on the same day, and it turns out he was available to come by the following morning to give an estimate.  He measured the roof, did a few quick calculations, and gave me a written estimate - in this case a dollar figure on the back of his business card.  He understood my goal of putting solar panels on that roof and made recommendations for the best approach to avoid problems down the road.  His quote was on par with another quote I received and well below a third quote.  (One of the other roofers I spoke with said, "you'll be pleased with Ed's work." It's a two-man team, Ed and his son-in-law Mark, and overhead appears to be low.  When I accepted his bid, he came by with a one-page three-part form to fill in the deals for the contract.  Ed doesn't take credit cards, and asks for 50% payment via check up front and the remainder upon completion.
Second: old school craft.  Ed and Mark hand-nail everything because they have more control than with air-nailers - less potential damage to the roof.  Because our garage is right on the property line, he made sure to talk to our neighbor about old shingles ending up on their property, and got permission to put down a tarp.  Ours was a small job - estimated at a day and a half, but completed in a day.  Because they finished their previous job halfway through the day, they started mine the afternoon before I expected them.  Everything was cleaned up and all waste hauled away at the end of the day.  I wouldn't have known they had been there if there weren't packages of new shingles next to the garage when I got home.
They finished midway through day 2 - again, by the time I got home everything was spotless.  He again checked in with the neighbor to make sure they were satisfied with his cleanup.  The roof looks great.  Ed stuck to his quote, he and Mark were extremely polite and respectful, super efficient.  Just a pleasure to do business with.  They even helped jump start my car when the battery died overnight.  I highly recommend!

Ed and his crew are amazing. They hand-hammered the entire roof (no air nailers) so they were sure it was done right. Our house is very difficult to roof because of the steep pitch and it being extremely high off the ground on the downhill side. Ed and his crew worked safely, quickly, and cleanly, and we've been very happy with the roof since. His rates were also the most reasonable of all the people who bid on it, so we felt we got the best quality for a very reasonable price. Highly recommended!

They came right away when I contacted them for an estimate, gave me a written estimate. After I chose them they gave me an estimate of when they would be available for the work. I signed the contract in June, the work was performed in August. It took 2 days to do the whole roof, including the attached garage. I found very few roofing nails left over after they had left. They cleaned up all the old roofing material. Just a slight amount of damage to some shrubs that i have next to the house where the old roofing material was dropped to the ground. Did not take some of my suggestions on the work to perform but explained to me why they differed with me and it was always to make sure that the roof performed better.

The work was done excellently. Friends in another state refused to believe me when I said no plants were injured - important to me - and there was no mess. They were careful, and cleaned as they went. And the work looks great! The only issue we faced was that like painting, roofing is weather dependant. Patience is required. But when they got to our house, they were quick, and very professional.

We had been wanting to have this project done since we first bought our home 6 years ago and had received several quotes over the years for roofing and siding. Because the job cost more than anticipated, we had to delay in order to save up. Ed had given us a quote 2 years ago that fell in line with the others received. When we finally had saved enough to complete the project, we asked Ed to come back for a follow-up quote. His reputation and willingness to provide jobs that he had done for inspection sealed the deal. We also liked the fact that the crew consisted of just Ed and his son-in-law, Mark. No worries about sub contractors or sloppy, underpaid workers - having the owner work on every job was important. We agreed on a price, and anxiously awaited the start date.
Because of Ed's workmanship, he was booked well beyond 6 months, and our project started later than anticipated (this was to our advantage since the job was originally to be done in January). Ed and Mark began at the beginning of March and the project lasted for 3 1/2 weeks. From day one, we knew that Ed and Mark were the right men for the job - their attention to detail, courtesy and patience were amazing. I am a bit of a perfectionist, as is Ed, so our vision for the home was well-matched. When I asked Ed if something could be done a certain way, his response was usually and quot; That's what I was going to do, and what I would do if this was my own home!and quot; Needless to say, the home turned out better than expected.
We opened our home up to Ed and Mark so they could use the bathroom, refill their coffee, etc. We did not feel nervous at all about them coming in - they always removed their boots and left no signs of being there. It was also nice to converse with them during their breaks - they are both personable and easy to know. We would hire Ed and Mark again if we ever needed anything done, and would highly recommend them to anyone in need of roofing, siding or windows.
