We know that this contractor has done good work, based on current "A" rating; but the carpentry work for us was a sad experience in several ways. In early August, Gary Martin gave us a low estimate and said the job, which involved temporary supports for the flat roof, was simpler than other contractors had told us. We offered to let him wait for cooler weather and after our planned trip to Vermont, but he insisted on starting before that. From Saturday to Monday, interrupted by a severe storm, his wife and his carpenter worked with only occasional supervision by him rather than his full participation that we had expected. We agreed on an add-on to replace all of the screens because they could not be salvaged; that doubled the price. We foolishly paid him for that as he left on Monday before the job was finished, and his workers left soon afterward without calling us to inspect the work. During the job, they borrowed our 6' ladder and our best hammer. Only the ladder was returned to our outbuilding, to which we had allowed them access for electricity. Before leaving for Vermont two days late, we sent an email about those losses as well as complaints about external TV cables left unsecured and imperfect abutting of old with new sills, but got no response. In September after the treated wood cured, our trusted painter discovered sloppy workmanship such as unset nails, screen edges not trimmed at the top outside, and failed grout joints below the sills; he repaired these at additional cost to us.

I received information on Angie's List for painting. Gary Martin called immediately. I told him I had used countertop paint and the paint had bubbled. He told me I should have used a primer. I told him the directions on the can and Lowe's had said not to use primer when I purchased. He said he would come out for an estimate and at that time told him I had gone back to Lowe's and they said the only time of primer I could use would be a bonding primer. I told if he I could purchase the bonding primer and other supplies needed, but planned to speak with him first about needed supplies and return to Lowe's. He immediately starting working and did not use a primer. The paint bubbled the same as it did when I panted. There was no point in my paying $250 for the same results. When we spoke on the phone the night prior, we only spoke about his giving a estimate the next day and not starting work. He told me he could come back out and repaint for $125. I will not pay him anymore money.
