After reviewing several reviews on a number of sites, we found that everyone is complaining about the same issues so I requested that our GC work with a more dependable company.
separate the hardwood floor between my kitchen and living room) and to refinish
the kitchen.
After a couple attempts to get a rep to come to my house to
look at the job, they sent an estimator.
I showed the estimator what I wanted as far as the transition strips by
pointing to one side of the kitchen that already has the strips and told him I
wanted the same thing on the opposite side of the kitchen, which adjoins the
living room. He gave me a written quote
and we scheduled the work, which I was told would take 3 days. I moved my pregnant wife and 2 young kids out
of the house and into a hotel for 2 nights so they wouldn?t have to endure the
fumes and because we had no use of our kitchen. When we returned at the end of the 3rd
day, the work was not done. After
calling, I learned that it would take 4 days and he alleged that he told me
this initially. This was not the case. To make matters worse, the crew installed a raised threshold, which looked
absurd and was nothing like what I pointed out to the estimator. When I asked what the story was with that, I
was told that was what was on the agreement.
Well, shame on me for not catching that he had written ?threshold?
instead of ?transition strips? on the quote. Regardless, I needed the correct transition strips installed and asked
that they do that. This is when the
run-around began.
Despite promises they would get it right, I can?t get them
to actually show up. They have no-showed
3 times and this has dragged out for 4 weeks.
This has cost me 2 days off from work to be here plus one day for my
wife. The company avoids my phone calls
and after 4 requests to have owner, Dwight Vanover, call me, I have yet to receive
a call from him. All I get is excuses
and lies. This is the most
unprofessionally run business I have dealt with.
UPDATE: I submitted a review on 11/27/2013 for this company- they were a no show. The owner contacted us, apologized, and offered to do the work for half price. We agreed on price and date project was to start 12/9/2013. We sent our two dogs to the kennel Sunday in preparation for the work to start early Monday morning. Low and behold THEY NEVER SHOWED as scheduled! We received a call the morning the project was to start! They couldn't come because of the weather! Really! I made it to work without any trouble. They said they could start the next day Tuesday so we agreed and left our dogs in the kennel. They called later in the day to say they would try to get here but if the weather is bad they wouldn't make it. WE called on Tuesday to find out they didn't start and NOW are being told not until next week. I am now out 3 days for the dog kennel! Let's not talk about the inconvenience! Never have I had dealt with such INCOMPETENCE! Shame on them!
It went badly. They had to come back and fix every floor. Something went wrong with the urethane and it was rough feeling and felt like sandpaper. They had to come back twice to fix it. We had to be without our home for two weeks. The stairs, we paid them to install the hardwood and the facing of the risers and the edges of the board are chipped out and jagged. They stained them on site and now I have black stain on the edges of all the boards.
We have been trying for a year to get the provider to come back and correct this. They have sent someone out to the house three different times and each time they have said they would put some caulking on it and I find that unacceptable. If I knew this would happen, I would have installed the flooring myself. I absolutely would NOT recommend them to anyone.
exclusively from 2004-2008 and the firm was responsive and the work was good.
I recently reached out to the firm around
1 Aug for a quote on some stair treads and risers. When I called, I spoke with
Dwight the owner who referred my lead to Eric the salesman.
Eric contacted me a few days after
I had initially called in to schedule an appointment at my home to evaluate the
stairs to provide a quote for service. We set an appointment for a few days out
and everything was set.
Eric ended up rescheduling twice
which was a little irritating, but understandable. The 3rd appt time
was scheduled for 8:00am on a weekday. I stayed home from work to meet Eric and
ended up calling him at 8:30 to see where he was. He answered the phone ?sorry,
I am at the office and buried in paperwork?. On a 3rd reschedule, Eric is now a
no call no show and didn?t have the decency to let me know he had decided not
to come to my house. His time is clearly more valuable than his customer?s.
Even after the no call no show, I
asked Eric if we could forego the appointment if I sent him photos of the area
for him to evaluate. He agreed, so I
sent him 4 or 5 comprehensive photos that any estimator could do a takeoff from
and provide an estimate.
Eric didn?t respond a week after I
sent the pics and has yet to do so to this day.
It is unfortunate Dwight (owner) employs
or did employ such a lazy and incompetent salesman because his installers are
hard working and proficient. Eric?s carelessness and irresponsibility have
blacklisted Vanover?s from my contact list.
450 for installation of the floor (I provide the product for this)
1200 for the stairs, to include the product.
Altogether it would have been 1650 dollars about. I thought that the price for the stairs was low, but the sf of the hallway was high. He said that he would call his uncle to get a better price... So here it comes - the BAIT AND SWITCH.
(Whether this is an honest mistake, he did nothing to try to fix it so I assume it was not.)
He came back and said that he made a mistake, the stairs would be 2400, not 1200. He then quoted approx. 3200 for the job. Well above lumber liquidator's pricing at 2300 with product. He then said that he would do it for an even 3000! I told him that he needed to talk with his uncle to come down a bit more and I would consider (hoping that this was truely an honest mistake). When I asked for the estimate, he told me no (as the price was incorrect on it). If it was a mistake, I would think that he would have tried to call and have his uncle come down to a price closer to the original estimate.
So, back to lumber liquidators to finish the job...
We had looked at reviews on Angie's prior to selecting Vanover and it appeared that others had similar experiences but the bottom line was that if there were any flaws they always came back to ensure it was done right. That was the most important thing to us. We didn't want it fast if it is not right. So, again bottom line is that the final product is beautiful and we have had numerous positive comments from visitors to our home. Additionally, the price was very competitive.
The dustless system leaves very little dust; it is NOT totally free of dust so don't be confused- clean up was minimal & all trim was put in place as requested.
Careful in the new kitchen not to damage appliances and new cabinetry.
After Vanover removed the hardwood they claimed the sub-floor was defective. At this point the home was uninhabitable. Vanover than required that I pay $7,000 for them to finish the repair. I vehemently objected as there is no way the hardwood problem was my fault of the fault of the sub-floor. Since the house was uninhabitable I had no choice but to bring a check to the house so that work would continue. Vanover than proceeded to install the new hardwood over the old sub-floor.
Vanover has never provided any evidence that the sub-floor was defective. I have provided independent analysis and inspection that the sub-floor is more than adequate. The fact that Vanover installed over the existing sub-floor, and the noise stopped, proves that the sub-floor is fine and the problem was the result of negligent installation by Vanover.
Once the hardwood was replaced, and the house was habitable, i requested reimbursement of the $7,000. Vanover has refused to reimburse me and now claims the sub-floor was defective. They have continued to distort the truth. Vanover did not honor our Contract, their warranty, or the letter they wrote stating they would incur the costs to replace the defective hardwood. I would strongly discourage anyone from using them as they do not stand behind their work and instead make false claims in an attempt to avoid their contractual responsibilities.
be finished by Thursday, Sept. 21. On Tuesday I waited for the company
to show up and begin work and when they hadn't come out by 10 a.m. I
called and was iinformed they would be out by 1 p.m. I waited again and
they didn't show up. I called again and was told they would not be
coming out until the following morning. I was told by the salesperson
the day the contract was signed that the floor color needed was gunstock
(which does not match my existing floor). Unfortunately, I don't have
time to wait for another color to be applied. The salesperson also told
me there would be no problem finishing the floor at least 48 hours
before we needed to get our furniture back into the room (we had a party
planned for the weekend). Now, I am still waiting for the second coat
to be applied and they are telling me they won't be out until tomorrow
morning, which is Friday. I was also informed that it would be fine to
move our furniture back into the room on Friday evening which is less
than 48 hours for the final finish to dry. The crew that did the work
didn't tell us we needed to turn the heat on last night so the floor
could dry and they even kept the windows open for ventilation. Then
they showed up this morning at 7 a.m. without informing us they would be
doing so and couldn't put the final coat on because the first coat was
still tacky. They promised to return in a couple of hours so I waited
at home all day and was finally told they won't be out until tomorrow. I
am really ticked off about this because I thought Angie's list vetted
the businesses on here and I trusted the reviews I read about
Vanover's. So much for spending money on Angie's list.
