"Thank you for those nice comments. Doug King"
The work itself was disappointing. The gaps between the tiles were uneven, there were holes and gaps in the grout, and there was thinset on the walls. His crew did not clean up after themselves, and they did not re-hang the bathroom door when they were done. The final price I was charged included an extra charge for grout additive that was not in the original proposal.
In all fairness when I brought these issues to Mr. King's attention he offered to come out and correct them. Of course by then, we had hung the bathroom door, cleaned up and even fixed the grout gaps. He also reimbursed the unexpected grout additive charge.
So his customer service was good. It was just the tile work itself that was disappointing.
Adding to the original estimate of the 5 day project were problems with the existing plumbing that were corrected, and my and quot;exuberanceand quot; in wielding the tools of demolition added work in replaced drywall and a door molding. There was a mis-communication of whether the commodes were to be replaced by me or them. The costs of these additional services was not out of line, but added to the end costs.
The floor of the guest bath was laid on Monday, grout was done Tuesday, and base tile on Wednesday. The bath/shower was available each morning.
Overall, we are very pleased with the results, the problem is now there is more work to be done painting, fixtures, counters, etc. to catch up to the tile work! Oh, and we have to wait a week for the shower to fully dry before we can use this masterpiece.
Word of warning, I don't recall if it was OPT or another quote, but it stated, and quot;dust will get EVERYWHERE!and quot; No matter who does the work this isn't a clean job. The guys cleaned up every afternoon, but there is no way to stop the dust that is created.
If/ when we choose to do more tiling, OPT and Doug will be our first choice.
( Shower doors are installed by glass professionals)
His price was based on the price of the tile I chose, grout and waterproofing system plus his labor. I paid extra to have a polished brass drain.
I purchased new plumbing fixtures because my old ones were 25 years old and I didn't want to have a problem with them down the road. I purchased the fixtures at Ferguson's.
Mr King had other jobs and said it would be two weeks before he could start and in two weeks he started as promised. Mr King warned me about the plaster dust and grit. I was able to empty everything out of bathroom and master bedroom, cover all furniture and computer equipment with drop cloths. When they came in they covered my carpet with drop covering where they would walk. In the bathroom they worked with a draw fan to blow dust out the window and kept the bathroom door shut to minimize airborne particles. The first day, taking out the old shower was the noisiest because they had to cut the fiberglass. The installation went smoothly. He said it would take four days and it took four days. My bathroom shower is gorgeous! Their work is excellent. i wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others and I would definitely use them again.
PS : I also asked if they would take off the doors in the bathroom and closet so I could paint them and would be willing to pay them to do so. They did that and took off the door hardware for me and wouldn't take payment for the and quot;extraand quot;. that was kindness itself. I say and quot;Thank you!and quot; to Doug and his assistant.
From the initial estimate, until the job was completed, they were fantastic. They showed up on time, worked hard and we are very happy with the results. We would highly recommend to anyone and we will use them again.
We did have one other little hitch as well. Doug did sell me on as a transition to an adjacent floor, overlapping and floating the new kitchen floor finished with a bull-nose tile as the exposed edge instead of some sort a transition strip. It turns out that once he got into working on the kitchen floor he found out that it would not be high enough to make that work so we ended up about $20 of bull-nose tile we never used and the old transition strip back in place, it still looks good.
Once again, a very positive experience despite a couple small problems. Doug does a great job and uses quality materials, he might run a little more then the other guys but I think he is worth it.
