So, what did we get? Well, as I dug through the pile, I discovered that the orgro was just on the top. The res of the pile was essentially construction dirt. It was hard-packed, and it was mostly clay. Since the whole point of my project was to dig up the hard clay soil that is in our yard and replace it with something that is better, I felt like all the work I did was essentially for nothing. If the soil was at least blended well - if they had actually run the mix through some kind of a grinder first to mix it up, perhaps that would have done the job. But the "top soil" which they claim is "FINELY PROCESSED THROUGH A 3/8″ SCREEN" was hard-packed, and in some cases I found boulders of clay hard as stone.
A project that was to take me a weekend or two turned into weeks, as I pounded through the "soil", broke it up, and mixed it with the orgro to turn it into something that should have been delivered in the first place. The plant beds where I poured this mixture are nowhere near as productive as expected. Grass grows well - nothing else does. Strawberries are barely taking root, and carrots are not able to go down deeper than an inch or so. Next year I'll have to order orgro (of course from a different supplier) to amend the soil and till the whole thing back up. Certainly not what I was expecting.
Just to clarify that I understand what top soil is supposed to look like, we actually made an order with a different company last year. That time, we only got 5 cubic yards for a smaller project. I was not 100% satisfied because the mix contained scraps of plastic bags, and some other small pieces of litter. This is why this year I went with Lumber Jake - I figured they'd be better. Alas, the soil was not blended with the orgro, and the orgro had similar litter to what we got the year before. That suggests to me that the orgro is more or less the same, but the soil blended in the previous delivery was actually soil. What we got from Lumber Jake was construction dirt.
I actually contacted the company about this. Sent them pictures, told them what they delivered was not what they claim to be delivering. No response. I'm not getting my money back - I've already accepted that. But please, don't give them yours. My recommendation is that you go to the company's yard (JK Enterprises operates out of Warrenton, so too far for me to drive), and pick the stuff you want yourself, so they don't just dump what they picked up at a local construction site in your driveway and call it "local top soil".
(patio base), bags of stone, and bulk stone for several landscaping projects at
my home. What I like the best about JK Enterprises is how they deliver. Each
palette is brought to location on my property off the semi tractor with a
forklift they provide. The delivery staff are efficient, courteous and knowledgeable.
This is the second time i have used JKE and will likely again next year.
