Overall experience was unprofessional. They were eager to start right away and said they would finish the work in 3 weeks, 10 weeks later and numerous calls asking them to finish our work, they had 80% of the work done, they walked off the job leaving us to find other contractors to finish it the work. During the entire construction process, one of the owners who handled our job, Todd Simons would rarely return my calls and texts and would constantly complain how he was losing money on the job when we gave him the specs and materials we chose before the contract was signed and paid additional for the material costs he said he lost money on. He would wait until the last minute to order materials and then would say the materials will take too long to come in and asked us to run to the store to pick out materials because he could not get the items we requested in time. Then they would go work on other jobs for a couple weeks saying they were too busy to work on ours. They left a day laborer at our house unsupervised and having no experience with the work they gave him and had the rest of the crew go work on other jobs. The framers, drywall hanger and finisher, electrician and plumber did a nice job. The rest of the workers did not follow instructions and would not correct their errors, such as removing the wrong color tiles they installed and instead of squaring off an obviously uneven step, they tiled right over it, We picked out a grout color and they did not use it nor did they seal the grout which we requested. We showed them a sample of the grout width we wanted which is 1/8" wide. They installed the tile correctly in the bathroom which was the first room they tiled but the rest of the 4 rooms (one room being a large open area) the grout width was 1/4" or more. And, after we pointed out the grout was too wide, they continued installing it with a 1/4" width in the other rooms anyway. We said we did not want the carpenter to install shoe molding and wanted to have the baseboard molding cover the tile after the tile was installed. They ignored our request and installed the baseboard before the tile was laid. The construction of the deck was a long series of errors. They miscalculated the placement of the footers by a foot, installed the decking boards without using a plumb line as a guideline leaving the screws in crooked lines like drunken sailors. We also contacted the other owner, Joe Nardi and asked him to help us get our job finished. Joe returned one of my calls and spoke to Todd which did not change our situation at all. When Todd told us he wanted to end our job without finishing the work, we said if he wants to end it, then we want to have the materials he purchased and have both parties sign a termination form. Todd verbally agreed and never followed through with the termination terms. Hawkeye was absolutely terrible at communicating with us as the customer. They ignored any contacts with us until the last minute and repeatedly blamed us for material cost overruns when they either ignored our requests for certain material quality or waited weeks to order which resulted in higher costs. We received excuses, arguments and breathtakingly poor project management in return.
