In September, 2012, we hired Lowe's' Kitchen Remodeling Department to remodel our kitchen -- new cabinets and quartz countertops. The designer was a very nice guy; I considered him a friend -- he had designed our kitchen peninsula for us about 4 years ago, and it came out beautifully, with no problems. That is why we went back to this guy and this particular Lowe's store. So this designer took our own general measurements and came up with a plan. He had a very good idea: To move the refrigerator
from being against the wall to being closer to the stove. He then would put the pantry next to the wall. He told us that the pantry would have to actually be placed 3 inches from the wall, or the rolling drawers on the inside wouldn't be able to come out. He told us that we would lose 3 inches of counter space. We agreed and signed all the papers. I did not read all the papers, because I trusted this man! I thought he knew what he was doing and that he valued our trust in him to create the kitchen of our dreams, to know his materials, and to spend our money wisely! So the cabinets were installed on Halloween -- October 31. It was a day later that I began to put things away, and I noticed that there was no Lazy Susan in the corner cabinet, just shelves. I had specifically requested a Lazy Susan. The Lowe's people said that the Lazy Susan was not on the contract; the designer had omitted it! They
ordered a Lazy Susan for us, but we had to pay for it. They installed it at no cost to us. A few weeks later I was wondering why there was such a gap between the top of my refrigerator and the bottom of the cabinet. I sent a picture to Lowe's, and they said that the designer had ordered a 12 inch cabinet instead of a 15 inch cabinet. They gave us a new cabinet -- but by then we had discovered two screw-ups by this designer. Then, my husband and I went to Lowe's and spent $2,000 on a new stove and a new refrigerator to celebrate our new kitchen. When we got home we realized that the new refrigerator would not fit the space, because the new one was 36 inches wide (the current standard) and the Lowe's designer had kept the old space of 33 inches!!! I couldn't believe it! This guy never discussed with us the width of the space that he was going to allow for a fridge; he never asked us the age of our current fridge or suggested that new refrigerators are now 36 inches wide, so that we should factor that into the plan!!!! He didn't utter one word about the refrigerator space! Then I started thinking about the 3 inches of "dead space" between the pantry and the wall, because the designer said the drawers wouldn't roll out. I took a tape measure: The drawers roll out just fine with the door opened at only 90 degrees: The pantry did not need to be 3 inches from the wall!!! The designer did not know the specs of the materials that he was selling to us!! So we contacted Lowe's in December. Oh, we are too busy during the holidays; oh, we're short-staffed ... A Lowe's representative didn't actually come out to our house to look at the refrigerator space and the pantry until two weeks ago. He agreed that the pantry would function just fine if it was right next to the wall. We told him we wanted the pantry moved to the wall and the refrigerator space increased to 36 inches; that would require them to alter the trim on the floor and on the wall, and order a 36" X 15" cabinet. After follow-up calls on the part of my husband, a Lowe's assistant. manager finally called yesterday: They will not do anything to rectify this problem, because we had signed the contract! So Lowe's is standing behind an employee who made THREE huge errors in my once-in-a-lifetime new kitchen, and leaving me with a kitchen which I am unhappy with, instead of standing up for me, a repeat customer who has spent THOUSANDS of dollars with them and who trusted them!!!
